  • 1 room with 8 beds

Standard YHA quality beds.

The kitchen has a couple of cookers and is large enough to cook for the group.

The dining area is fairly small and to sit everyone down at the same time would involve sitting in the adjacent kitchen.

The (upstairs) lounge has a wood burning stove and seating for about 10 people.

On the whole the hostel has a cramped and compact feeling.

Most windows in the hostel overlook the valley and the surrounding peaks.

Parking

Sizeable car park just outside the hostel.

Price

November-March £560 for two nights.[2]

LRP Issues

Set Dressing Requirements

The dining area has plastic chairs. The hostel has the standard YHA covering of posters and notices that would require set dressing over.

Routes and Features of Interest

Quarry

Nearby quarry buildings

A few hundred yards up the path from the hostel there are some square concrete quarry buildings. Once walkers have left the area for the afternoon these could suitably be used as some form of WWI onwards base.

From what could be seen these appeared to be relatively safe and with little to damage or upset around them.

Coppermines Valley

Abandoned building in Coppermines valley

Starting at the hostel itself is Coppermines Valley. This is a fairly steep valley, but shouldn't be too arduous for relatively fit players and crew. It has a number of crystal clear pools at the bottom of waterfalls of varying depths, in addition to the interesting mine entrances. There is also a ruined building a few hundred yards up the valley from the hostel with a tall chimney.

Mine Entrances

Mine entrance not far away

There are a number of mine entrances in and around Coppermines Valley. Provided it was ensured that no-one went too deep into these, they could be used fairly safely for an encounter or two.

Levers Water

About half a mile's walk up the valley towards the Old Man of Coniston is a reservoir.

Norms

There are a number of holiday cottages about a hundred yards away from the hostel.

The access path to the hostel carries on up to the Old Man of Coniston and is heavily used by walkers. Most of the surrounding area is overlooked by the much used peaks and great care would need to be taken not to alarm the walkers with role-played injuries and fights.

Events run here

None known.

Pros & Cons
