Edmund Aubrey Blackthorn-Santiago III

Wastrel scion of Neovictorian aristocracy and former IAN officer

Capatain of the Caveat Emptor

Edmund was always a problem child. When he wasn't trying to poison his maths tutor, he'd be stealing his mother's jewels giving them away to whatever lower class or exotic misbegotten girl caught his fancy. A constant embarassment to his family, he would challenge his classmates to duels--offering them his family title if they won. (Naturally his family refused to honor these agreements.)

Life was a bore to Edmund. Even challenging 5 of his classmates at a time to duels was losing its appeal. He wanted excitement! Things came to a head when, in a failed attempt to simultaneously kill his school's headmaster, history and maths tutor, he burned down his school in a chemistry lab explosion.

His family finally packed him off to the Imperial Air Navy, hoping it would whip him into shape. Edmund was actually happy to go--here was a chance to have real excitement! But the reality of life outside the pampered Neovictorian enclaves was nothing like like what he had been taught. The pirates, Neobedouins and Skylofters were far more interesting and (and less cowardly) than his navy comrades. Edmund's Navy career came to an end when his captain ordered gave orders to gun down a caravan of Neobedouins who were "trespassing" on some land claimed by the Navy. Edmund felt this wasn't sporting at all and offered instead to challenge each of the Neobedouin men to a duel. The captain was having none of this. After an exchange of harsh words, the captain and bridge crew found themselves dead with Edmund piloting the airship back to base, before the rest of the crew realized what had happened.

The Air Navy investigators never did discover how, in the end, the munitions dump was set ablaze or how all but one airship at the base were damaged, destroyed or disabled. In that one airship, Edmund fled with a handful of disgruntled sailors and freed prisoners who formed the nucleus of their new pirate crew. Now "Captain Eddie" makes his living as a mercenary (and occasional pirate), all the while writing letters back to his family (and his family's friends and enemies) bragging about (and exaggerating) his exploits and depravity. Edmund has no idea if his letters ever reach them, but he's hoping if he sends enough they'll all die of humiliation.

Complications

  • Enemy (-5) Maybe his former Navy captain actually survived Edmund's mutiny and has sworn to capture the traitorous scum. Maybe Edmund's old maths tutor finally snapped and now wanders the Earth seeking revenge on his former torementor. Maybe a brother or cousin has vowed to put a stop to this depraved bad seed and bury this family's shame--literally. Regardless, someone wants Captain Eddie dead and they don't care about any reward.
  • Disaffected (-3) Ya think? Edmund wanted to be a captain not because of any great skill or any real desire to command, but because he simply cannot take orders from anyone--unless they defeat him in a duel or contest, be it a duel of wits, gambling, swordplay, guns or cannons at 50 paces. He has the utmost respect, though for anyone who can beat him (or who at least try to.)
