(*)These skills do not incur the -5 penalty for ‘No Skill Level’

Some skills such as 'language' and 'pilot' for example can be taken multiple times for different types.

A number in parenthesis such as (2) is the multiple in skill points it requires to increase that skill. Some skills such as Martial Arts have multiples depending on the type taken.

Background

Rust main page

  • Concept: ex-biker and bounty hunter who has been on both sides of the law before settling down. Before the war, he worked as a mechanic and supplemented his income with running a self-defence school.
  • Catchphrase: "Fucking civilians need to learn not to provoke dangerous, experienced people! And to run away if they do!"
  • Bio

Being the reclusive sort (this changed later in his life - although if anyone could describe me a reclusive biker, I might be tempted to play it), he joined a gang shortly after he managed to finish high school. It was one of the so-called "outlaw motorcycle clubs" (or simply "motorcycle gangs"), but despite the gang participating in some activities the police frowns upon, he managed to avoid getting a police record. This was less on his own merit, than on the merits of the gang leader, who was the cautious sort. They even say he was he was working as enforcer for the mob, but again, he was secretive.
All of the secrecy in the world didn't help him when rivals ambushed them and started shooting. Only the youngster and a couple others avoided the carnage, and one of them was so shaken he left his Harley to gather dust in a basement or some such.
The young man was not nearly as shaken, but he soon came to realize two things. First, he didn't like any of the other gangs in the area. Second, they could have been the perpetrators of the ambush. Three, his only civilian skills were as a mechanic and as a man who is good at violence.
He chose the second calling and worked as a bounty hunter for quite a while. As part of his new job, he improved considerably his skills in fist-fighting and shooting. Sure, the gang had taught some tricks to the new puppy, but it wasn't a real system, just methods for putting an enemy down, hard. That's also how he got involved in the self-defence circles.
This finally lead him away from the bounty hunting as well. He decided to settle down, and they said mechanics are always needed in Detroit - especially mechanics that don't ask questions about the bullet holes in the engine. Besides, there is lots of crime, so he would be able to find people that want to learn how to avoid or survive trouble, should he decide to do so. And in the worse case scenario, he would be able to hold a temporary job as a bounty hunter, until his license expired.
Well, these were his intentions, at least. The reality was, he did open a repair studio, and his self-defence club, but he joined a paramilitary organization, more so he could participate in their practice than out of genuine interest in their political ideas.
But when the war started, he realized he has never been a cop or soldier, yet he never was a civilian, either. And he lost another group, this time due to the disease, as most members of the paramilitary organization got infected after a practice session. He himself was saved because of eating bad Chinese food, which kept him home, throwing out. This, ironically, helped him avoid the disease.
Now he is trying to help the people of his community to survive and reconstruct the city. Nobody promised it's going to be easy!

  • A Look In His Mind

Manolo dislikes killing it is a way of dealing with people non-lethally. Unlike others, he's not a remorseless killer, at least at the start.
Well, he might become a killer, maybe he's even had to kill already, but at least, he's likely to be the reluctant one.
There are different situations, of course.
Hurting people without lasting consequences is fine and an action that doesn't even require thinking - if the guy wants to be punched up, he's got a punch coming.
Hurting them in a way that could be fatal, is something he would avoid unless the confrontation is already serious - even hand-to-hand weapons are not to be used lightly, and blades are no less dangerous than bullets at the proper range. Hurting another human in a way that would most likely be fatal pre-apocalypse, is something that might happen in the heat of the moment, maybe even happened already, but he will consider this his own failure for not controlling the situation.
Which is to say, he's not going to hesitate if the other guy is reaching for his gun. With such skills, he should know the time for self-analysis is later, and only if you survive. It means he'd try to avoid coming to a "kill or get killed" situation, though, despite the choice being one he has made in advance. If it takes negotiation to avoid that, fine, and if it takes disarming the guy and pistol-whipping him with his own gun, well - this is a merciful action compared to shooting him, right?
