Yu Shan - The Violet Bier of Sorrows

50 years after the Breaking of the Wheel (BW 49)
12th of Ascending Water

Today is a somber day in the Celestial City. The Unconquered Sun had not led in the Games since his last setback against Luna, and since then the lead has been shifting between the Maidens, leaving the skies cloaked in night for weeks. Currently it is Mercury's golden-yellow glow dominating the panoply of stars, having wrested that privilege from Jupiter just moments before. It would likely remain that way for days longer, as Game turns have been noticeably sparse for years now.

The halls of the Violet Bier are no less somber -- perhaps more so, for the darkness here is not simply that of night, but something deeper and stiller, the very ambiance of Endings. It is a finality that cannot help but chill those who fear loss, yet it is not a finality without purpose, without compassion. As those who deal in the end of things would say, an ending is only the catalyst of change, the precursor to a new beginning. So it is no surprise that it is the Bureau of Endings that has remained the most deeply interested in the cyclic nature of life and souls, and dedicated to restoring the function of the Wheel that governs them.

Wayang, God of Silence and Minister of Endings, has personally summoned your presence to the Bier. You have known for some time now that a major offensive has been launched by the armies of Heaven on the shadowland known as the Black Chase, in conjunction with the Elite Task Group for the Guidance and Re-Appropriation of Lost Souls, better known as the Soul Collectors. You and your future companions will be conducting the concluding mission of the Black Chase campaign, but you've yet to have the opportunity to find out exactly what your role in it will be... until now.

[10:42:40] (144) Storyteller:

The audience hall in which you have been instructed to wait has been lit with lanterns burning with a cool purple light, throwing shadows upon the darkly hued wall hangings and marble flooring. The shadows are never quite stationary; they shift and flicker in the space between light sources, intangible and formless. The only sounds to break the utter silence of the chamber come from the Soul Collectors gradually assembling at its center.

[10:47:50] (197) Lancer: ((Lancer has Valor 1 in this situation, poor thing))
[10:48:48] (35) Orradi Filia: The silence is being rather especially broken by the tinking of a bell and the peaceful rustling of cloth as a tall and very lovely woman in dark-colored long skirts and wearing starmetal in the form of bracers and a breastplate strides in with a dancer's grace and confidence, adjusting the tight bun that keeps her hair back. Even with the magical material, it's more obvious what she is with her caste mark on her brow, a chosen of Venus.
[10:52:23] (198) Kess The Huntress: From the other side of the hall comes a 6'2, blaze haired barbarian, wearing the leathers and skins of the Icewalker nation. Bearing an ancient sunmetal Daiklaive on her bacl, which looks as large as perhaps Orradi is, her form is marked with battle scars. Striding into the hall is Kess The Huntress, one of Ahlat's lieutenants and a Dawn Caste general in the Division of Battles.
[10:54:10] (35) Orradi Filia: The woman nods to the other woman entering, before looking at the door to see who else is looking, her hands clasped primly.
[10:54:57] (197) Lancer: A few seconds later, sandals brushing whisper-soft across the floor, a young man in a simple, brown monk's robe follows the first woman. He keeps his eyes down, blue-green hair held back into a long tail by a strap of leather. His knuckles are white around the shaft of what seems to be a bamboo broom, only made entirely of Starmetal, with bristles of dazzling white. Starmetal also gleams from the bracers beneath his sleeves, shaped like twin prayer strips wrapped around his forearms.
[10:55:17] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess gives a nod, as she takes a seat. She seems rather uncomfortable in the precincts of Heaven.
[10:56:09] (197) Lancer: A short Starmetal bow hangs in a rather crude quiver at his back, and by the way he fidgets with the strap, he isn't very used to wearing it.
[10:56:27] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud can be heard from afar, his footsteps resounding through the corridors of the Violet Bier. Other people might be moved to quietness and introspection by the silent and shadowy hallways, but not he. As usual he is clad in ornate royal blue and gold brocade and a tricorn hat sits on his head at a bold angle. Even with the hat he isn't as tall as the two women already waiting in the audience hall, but his presence is impressive none the less. At his side a rather large revolver sits in a holster.
[10:56:40] (35) Orradi Filia: A serene grin flashes on the woman's face at the appearance of the young man, and she gives a small wave, still preferring to stand.
[10:57:44] (165) Redoubtable Magister: So out of place.

The halls around him are not his home, but they are not so unfamiliar in atmosphere. But it is not the decor that makes this situation so extraordinary for him... It is the circumstances. Some time ago he had been brought in this place - with Essence-Dampening Chains around his wrists and ankles, as a prisoner of Heaven. Now, he walks freely amongst its halls, having been enlisted in the ranks of the Soul Collectors himself.

His features would be handsome, even gentle, if not so unmistakenly marked by the touch of the Dark Exaltation; his face is deathly pale and framed by strands of his blue-black hair, tied in a topknot. He is dressed in flowing Sijan funeral robes in pure whites, and simple sandals adorn his feet. Stepping quietly into the halls, he gives a short, polite nod to those in assistance, but says nothing - he is all too conscious of his precarious position among the other chosen.

[10:57:53] (197) Lancer: He looks up, his eyes surprisingly bright crimson, with stars of the same hue in his pupils. He smiles shyly, and offers her a small wave, moving to stand next to and slightly behind his fellow Sidereal.
[10:58:23] (35) Orradi Filia: Once she sees Kess and Lancer's artifacts, her eyebrows go up slightly, recognizing them, before saying softly over her shoulder. "Lancer, you can't be that afraid, can you?"
[10:58:56] (197) Lancer: "Not of the mission."
[11:00:43] (35) Orradi Filia: "I know that." She smiles slightly. "You are one of the most daring of all of the Maidens' Chosen." She pulls out a seat with a hint of a flourish, "Which confuses me on why you look so nervous now."
[11:00:45] (155) Silver Cloud: "Good morning, everyone," Silver Cloud greets those already present with a smile, then takes a seat for himself. New people - that was one of the perks of this job. Always new and always interesting people to meet.
[11:01:02] (197) Lancer: "I just don't think I deserve such an honor." He looks downward again, his face delicately handsome, "I'm just...there's a lot of important people here."
[11:01:39] (35) Orradi Filia: "Is it morning?" Filia looks at Silver Cloud, blinking. "At this point, I never keep track in Yu-shan unless I have duties to be done at a specific time."
[11:02:20] (197) Lancer: He also blushes a little at the compliment, sitting down, "and you're giving me far too much credit, I just clean."
[11:02:29] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud looks a bit embarrassed. "Well, it was morning when I arrived in Yu-Shan. I have to admit I'm not used to the way the sky works up here ..."
[11:02:45] (198) Kess The Huntress: Upon seeing the Deathknight enter, Kess' first impulse is to reach for Breaker of Darkness, the mighty Daiklaive that is inscribed with Prayers to Gaia and the damning crimes of the Primordials against her. The likes of the Deathknight would not have been able to make it this far into the Violet Bier however unless he were a...penitent. "Someone tell me why I shouldn't send this slave to Oblivion to Lethe, right now. I'm certain there is a good, diplomatic reason. Kess the Sun Wolf, Dawn Chosen of Sol Invictus."
[11:03:38] (35) Orradi Filia: "I wasn't either, for the first week or so." She looks at Kess, and then at the Deathknight, even with her face palening in the light. "If he wasn't part of us, I would think the Celestial Lions would have already attacked him."
[11:04:47] (155) Silver Cloud: Seeing the Dawn Caste - that's the part that stuck in his mind back from the first briefing on Soul Collector operatives - reach for her weapon, Cloud looks up and his eyes narrow dangerously. One of THEM, here? That had not been part of the deal.
[11:05:01] (197) Lancer: "That's what I assumed. Of course, a show of confidence, letting your opponent see where your pieces are moving, is a very good bluffing gambit."
[11:05:35] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia gets up again, moving to be between everyone to keep a fight from breaking out.
[11:05:48] (198) Kess The Huntress: Her hand is not on her weapon yet, but her muscles bunch up, her eyes narrow. She forces herself to relax, her face full of distrust. "The Deathlords control the bulk of Creation. Ahlat sent me here to protect you Viziers. I can see why he wanted me here."
[11:06:10] (197) Lancer: "I'm here to keep Filia safe too."
[11:06:11] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He inclines his head politely to Silver Cloud's greeting, inwardly surprised at being addressed at all. He hasn't lifted his head that Kess' challenge resounds, and he lifts his eyes slightly, looking at the Huntress directly... Then bowing. When his voice is heard, it is quiet, almost subdued. "I have placed my life in the hands of those you serve. It is up to them what fate befalls me."
[11:06:39] (197) Lancer: He's had the broom in hand since he came in, if such a thing can be called a weapon. Then again, it IS Starmetal
[11:07:03] (35) Orradi Filia: "I would rather not have the peace of this meeting shattered by the drawing of Breaker of Darkness, or the offensive use of Lancer's broom."
[11:07:57] (35) Orradi Filia: She takes a deep breath, adjusting her stance.
[11:08:02] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess snorts, and sits back on her bench. "Very well then. As long as we have an understanding." The Daiklaive has not been drawn, obviously. While it has been known to shake in it's scabbard when faced with demons and undead, it sits serenely in it's leather straps at this moment.
[11:08:39] (35) Orradi Filia: "I suppose though... We should do formal introductions, no? I know Lancer and I know each other, but..."
[11:09:24] (197) Lancer: Nod nod
[11:09:29] (35) Orradi Filia: She takes a strange stance, her feet positioned as if to begin a ritual waltz.
[11:09:58] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud remains silent through the exchange of challenges and appeals to peace. It is obvious, that politics are at work here, high-level politics if the Department of Endings is allowing a Deathknight walk their halls. And despite what the books say about his Caste, politics bore him at best and disgust him at worst.
[11:10:45] (35) Orradi Filia: "My name is Orradi Filia, Chosen of Lady Venus, Maiden of Serenity. I am a Deliverer," She touchs the bell at her throat, "And I wear the Bell of a Thousand Butterflies.
[11:10:57] (35) Orradi Filia: "
[11:11:06] (155) Silver Cloud: Better to keep his quiet and observe. In time the falseness of the Death-servant would reveal itself.
[11:11:23] (144) Wayang, God of Silence: The Magister's presence here is ordained, as is the rest of yours.

The emaciated long-limbed silhouette of a figure with a nose like a bird's beak emerges from the shadows. If not for the illumination provided for the convenience of the Exalts, one may not have seen him at all, draped as he is in long, flowing swaths of cloth like the shadows themselves. The details of his features and the traceries of his elaborate headdress appear as if painted on in two dimensions, confusing the mortal limitations of perception.

Wayang, of course, does not speak, but his hands move in elaborate signs that, for all purposes, are as clear as speech to those who view it. Understanding how one translates those hand gestures into words is much more of a headache than simply accepting than they are understandable.

Soul Collectors. This time he addresses the group as a whole. Your timely attendance is appreciated.

[11:12:12] (197) Lancer: Lancer, though he tries not to show it, is IMMENSELY relieved that he doesn't have to stand up and talk in front of the whole group. The very idea makes him sweat.
[11:12:15] (35) Orradi Filia: She bows gracefully from her waist, showing respect to a superior of another Bureau.
[11:12:56] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess nods, inclining her head respectfully. "Master Ahlat sends his respect and greetings, Lord.
[11:13:03] (197) Lancer: He stands up and bows too, jerkily.
[11:13:56] ** (155) Silver Cloud stands up from his seat to introduce himself to his fellow Soul Collectors (and suspicious extra), but then turns to give the God of Silence a respectful nod before sitting down again. **
[11:14:52] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia keeps standing, though she leans on the chair, not seeming to care how it looks.
[11:16:15] (197) Lancer: Lancer plants his broom on the floor, leaning on it a little.
[11:16:23] (197) Lancer: He seems more comfortable that way.
[11:16:42] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He merely closes his eyes at the words, but opens them again once Wayang's interjection comes. They would likely not have much use for my name now, in any case. He bows deeply to the God of Silence, then remains standing, hands hidden within the sleeves of his robe.
[11:19:19] (35) Orradi Filia: "It is all of our duty to serve." Filia's voice seems to ring in the room, even at a low conversational tone.
[11:19:45] (197) Lancer: Nod!
[11:20:41] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud does little to hide that he is paying the man in the funerary cloths much more attention that his superior. The implicit question to the God of Silence is clear: Ordained presence or not, can he be trusted?
[11:21:24] (144) Wayang, God of Silence: Wayang acknowledges the greetings tersely. At the least, he seems approving, particularly that the Collectors have not decided to quarrel before the mission has begun.

Indeed. He gestures to Filia, who had already formally given her name. Many of you have not yet met. You may introduce yourselves, and all will be explained in time.

[11:21:45] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess keeps her own counsel, as she waits for the God of Silence to "speak". She seems distinctly irritated at the whole situated, although she does her best to not direct her irritation at Wayang or her fellow Exalts.
[11:22:57] (197) Lancer: ...Oh. Forced to introduce himself after all. The smallish Sidereal lets out a very tiny sigh. It would be unfair to call him irritated, but...he hated talking in front of other people.
[11:27:30] (35) Orradi Filia: The woman glances at Lancer looking awkward and sighing, patting him on the head (6'3 vs 5'3). "This is Lancer In Between Rays of Thought, chosen of Mars."
[11:27:41] (197) Lancer: He straightens up, and speaks quickly, "Lancer Between the Rays of Thought, Chosen of Mars, Maiden of Battles." he manages to get it all out, "Er, there isn't much else to say...I just sweep things, really." ._.
[11:28:17] (35) Orradi Filia: Her words pretty much mingle with his, due to her voice being soft.
[11:29:10] (165) Redoubtable Magister: "I am known as the Redoubtable Magister of the Courts of Obsidian. There are those who call me Zahari... It is up to you what you call me." Again, the answer is quiet, and polite. The man's dark eyes look up to the other Exalts in the room for a moment, but turn away almost immediately after.
[11:29:13] (197) Lancer: "Er, sorry, Filia." he winces at interrupting her. Oddly, he seems used to being patted.
[11:30:07] (35) Orradi Filia: "It's no problem, Lancer. You need to begin speaking in this sort of situation." She states genly as she nods at the Abyssal's introduction.
[11:30:56] (197) Lancer: "I'm bad at that...you're much better at that kind of thing." He mumbles.
[11:31:43] (35) Orradi Filia: She chuckles, pecking his forehead and then moving to the other side of the table. "Yes, but you are the one who will end up leading troops someday, not I!"
[11:31:52] (155) Silver Cloud: "All will be explained in time." That, in a nutshell, was why Cloud usually didn't bother much to keep up with the affairs of Yu-Shan or the Bureau of Destiny outside the Soul Collectors. A bunch on secretive, petty bureaucrats, most of them. At the 'suggestion' to introduce themselves he stands up and with a dramatic flourish takes off his tricorn hat. His clear, resounding voice seems to fill the room as he introduces himself: "Silver Cloud is my name and I have the honor to have awakened under the Crowned Sun. It is a pleasure to meet my comrades-in-arms in the service of Heaven against the forces of the Dead." At the word 'dead' his voice takes on a hateful note that he doesn't bother to hide from the Magister.
[11:32:44] (35) Orradi Filia: She hovers near one of the other Exalts, watching everyone.
[11:33:49] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess can't help but chuckle at the Eclipse's introduction. Having a fellow Solar here seems to put her a bit more at ease.
[11:34:31] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia lets out a small sigh at the hostilities so soon.
[11:34:40] (144) Wayang, God of Silence: The Magister is a Deathknight, and I am aware that this will disturb many of you. Indeed, Heaven itself has been divided in how to employ the dubious gift of a renegade.

Make no doubt about it, however. He is, while in your company, a Soul Collector as much as the rest of you. He will be treated as your ally, so long as he behaves as such, and acts in accordance to the will of Heaven. Otherwise...

Wayang's eyes, startlingly bright in the inky shadows of his face, stare directly at the Abyssal. He will be a betrayer to the dark and the light. And it will be your duty to destroy him.

[11:35:03] (197) Lancer: Troops are different, planning battle strategy, and even training warriors, might as well be a game of Gateway. It's easy, the lines of conflict and heroism almost childishly easy to predict...not like this sort of thing.
[11:35:51] (197) Lancer: "I understand."
[11:36:02] (35) Orradi Filia: The woman nods in agreement, glancing at the Abyssal again. Even with distrust in her eyes, there is still kindness.
[11:36:18] (197) Lancer: ...after all, Lancer's job is the elimination of messes, typically using his broom.
[11:37:13] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess says to Lancer - "You and I, we will have a talk later. leading troops is flesh and bone and piss and fear. If you are to be a great leader, you must learn this. As Mars studied at the feet of Sol, I will show you courage, and it's hard prices. There's thinking about war, and there is doing. This is if you would care for my experience, offered as an equal."
[11:38:31] (197) Lancer: He hasn't really judged the Deathknight yet. Both Magister and the man in the three-cornered hat seem like nobles, confident and secure, their actions in battles will likely reflect this. At this thought, he begins predicting when and where they might be at their weakest. Either way, he doesn't understand their type as people, at least not in a positive light, despite being able to weigh them as a set of factors.
[11:38:52] (197) Lancer: As for the woman with the sword..."Yes ma'am..."
[11:39:35] (35) Orradi Filia: "He is one of the bravest of the Bureau of Destiny, Sun Wolf." She sighs. "He just does not handle the affairs that are within Lady Venus's hands well."
[11:39:47] (197) Lancer: She scares him a little, and the same part of his mind that measures factors and conflict anticipates with relish that she might do the same to the enemy.
[11:40:08] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He nods slowly and deliberately at Wayang's words, lifting his chin slightly. His eyes betray no fear, however, only the stark resignation and conviction they had displayed ever since he was brought to Yu-Shan. He had surrendered himself with the expectation that he would be executed. Whether by the Gods or other Soul Collectors, should the moment come, he would not run.
[11:40:20] (144) Wayang, God of Silence: I take it that you understand. That said, Wayang seems unwilling to address the presence of the Magister any longer, and moves to bring some direction to their meeting.

Let us move on to the mission at hand. My agents will explain why you have been gathered here. The god gestures to either side of him. Two more figures step into the light, even as he seems to merge back into the ambient darkness, leaving but a pair of watching, glowing eyes to mark his presence.

[11:40:22] (155) Silver Cloud: A renegade he calls himself. A Soul Collector his is called by the Department. Would wonders never cease? Inwardly Cloud shakes his head in confusion. How could they trust him? Well, it didn't really matter what sweet words he could sing. By his actions they would know him and judge him accordingly. With extreme force, if it came to that - at the thought Cloud grins thinly.
[11:40:29] (197) Lancer: His shoulders hunch up at Filia's compliment, and he mutters something indistinct, his cheeks pink.
[11:40:45] (198) Kess The Huntress: A look of understanding comes over Kess' face. "Oh ho, I see. Well then, I will take pleasure in learning from him. I am certain things will work themselves out."
[11:41:06] (155) Silver Cloud: To Wayangs admonishment he simply nods. For the moment he would hold his peace.
[11:41:06] (144) Milcloch Distewi: On Wayang's right is a tall man of stoic bearing and powerful physique -- not a god, but a Chosen of Saturn, clad in dark hues in contrast to his pale Northerner complexion. His hair is dark as well, tied back away from his clean-shaven face, and he wears a necklace of dutifully polished prayer beads that serves as both his means to succor Saturn and to shepherd mortal souls back to Heaven.

"Milcloch Distewi," he introduces himself without fanfare, though Filia of course does not need the introduction, as the large, brooding man is her Sifu and has been training her nearly nonstop since her fateful arrival in Yu Shan. Lancer would recognize him as well, for Milcloch was one of the first and best of the Soul Collectors, and his prowess in the martial arts holds reknown throughout Heaven.

His acknowledgment of his student is little more than a terse nod, though he holds Filia's gaze for a time. Now it is your turn to prove your worth.

[11:41:27] (144) Shin Yiu: Shin Yiu, God of Political Change From the Bottom Up, stands at Wayang's left, taking the shape of a lean humanoid figure with the head of a silver fox. Unlike grim Milcloch, the subtle smirk on his muzzle belies his easily amused, if at times unabashedly sardonic, disposition. Silver Cloud is by now intimately familiar with his rapport, the razor sharp wit with which he both praises and criticizes the ups and downs of the Celestial Bureaucracy over time.

For the moment though, he deigns to be polite, dressed as he is in his "official" garb of wintry white robes lined in silver, as befitting of a heavenly dignitary. "Shin Yiu, Celestial Bureaucrat Third Rank, and all that... I have to say, this isn't really my purview at all, but I'm a much better talker than Milchy here, and we'd like to get you briefed and moving along chop-chop!"

[11:42:07] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia nods slightly to the man, smiling slightly at him, looking unsurprised about someone else speaking for Milcloch.
[11:43:24] (198) Kess The Huntress: As a warrior and a soul collector, Kess has utmost respect for the Peacebringer. She stands and nods to him with respect - word of his prowess circulates in the Division of Battles as one worth respect.
[11:43:34] (35) Orradi Filia: And there was a muffled snicker at the nickname, and a moment of a truly mischievious grin at the chosen of Saturn.
[11:44:02] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud grins as Shin Yiu cuts through the formalities. This was why he liked him, where he usually doesn't much care for politicians.
[11:44:19] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess also equally nods and bows to the small god Shin Yiu - she was always taught to respect trickster gods, and her Lunar friernds spoke of him with some fear.
[11:44:21] (197) Lancer: Lancer would nod to them both, but it isn't really his place, and he doesn't know either of them well, so he keeps his silence and listens.
[11:45:47] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He inclines his head again, deeply and deliberately, at the introductions. Like Lancer, he keeps his silence, however, already conscious of how much trouble his mere presence had caused, and unwilling to disrupt procedures even more.
[11:47:30] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch's reaction to Shin Yiu (and Filia's snicker) is hardly even a grunt, as he begins to speak of the mission. "The five of you --" and he does seem to include the Deathknight, though not completely willingly "-- have been chosen to join the campaign to cleanse the Black Chase, one of the major shadowlands of the East."
[11:48:06] (35) Orradi Filia: Her eyebrows shoot up, whistling slightly.
[11:49:02] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess grins, like her wolven namesake. Those who know her know that this is the same smile she wears before any great challenge.
[11:49:05] (197) Lancer: "Forest terrain."
[11:49:31] (197) Lancer: "I think I know a few tactics there, but mostly large-scale things."
[11:49:59] (197) Lancer: He, on the other hand, seems to be throwing himself into contemplation.
[11:50:35] (144) Shin Yiu: "Since the Breaking of the Wheel, the Black Chase has expanded to over five times its original size," Shin Yiu pipes up helpfully. "Over five hundred miles in diameter."

"It's really quite the bother. Particularly to the Linowan, whose territory is threatened by its expansion."

[11:50:40] (197) Lancer: "...Do you want it intact?"
[11:50:48] (198) Kess The Huntress: "The forest is ancient, and has been a Shadowland even back into the times of the 2nd deliberative, yes? Exalts go in and don't come out."
[11:50:54] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud, now back in his seat, leans back comfortably. Finally! This was the opportunity for the Soul Collectors to win a decisive battle and a chance for him to bring the fight into the heartland of the enemy. This was why he had joined up with Heaven.
[11:52:18] (198) Kess The Huntress: "This means capturing control of the manses and demenses within the chase, yes? This is a war of geomancy, from what I reckon. I'm not well school on such things, though. The songlines of that place are horror tales."
[11:52:21] (35) Orradi Filia: "We can get out easily."
[11:52:46] (35) Orradi Filia: She doesn't explain how, though her hand being over her bracers gives something of a hint.
[11:53:20] (144) Milcloch Distewi: "Hmph." Milcloch snorts at Lancer's comment, in particular, as he takes in the responses of the others. "Understand that the campaign against the Black Chase has been going on for many years, from our base in Sijan. The five of you alone will not be able to destroy it, as powerful as I am sure you believe you are."

"Instead, your role in this mission is a special one."

[11:54:23] (165) Redoubtable Magister: The Black Chase.

He nods slowly at the mission briefing, his eyes widening slightly as a grim countenance takes over his features. He knows of the importance the Shadowland has taken over the years, having been there a few times himself. He also knows of how precious the expanding Land has been to the Deathlords.

More than anything, he knows of the heavy resistance they would undoubltedly meet there.

[11:54:35] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess leads in close. Now, things were getting interesting.
[11:54:51] (35) Orradi Filia: At the comment of as powerful as you think you are, Filia winces, still grinning at a memory, but she looks otherwise intent.
[11:55:52] (197) Lancer: Lancer, meanwhile, doesn't think he's very powerful at all. However...this would be a much easier problem if he knew what kind of trees grew in the Black Chase, as it affects the efficacy of fire-based warfare.
[11:58:08] (197) Lancer: ...of course, that's only an idea, and one that would require extensive planning and precision, to be effective over so large an area. AND if resource acquisition is a goal, then fire suffers several disadvantages.
[11:58:18] (197) Lancer: But he listens, and doesn't speak.
[12:00:25] (144) Shin Yiu: "The Black Chase Benediction," Shin Yiu pronounces, in a way that lends the term great meaning...

"You are right, Lady Sun Wolf," he says, flashing an approving grin to Kess, "This is a war primarily of geomancy. Our troops have taken and are holding over 70 percent of the demensnes in the area. Which is good -- but not good enough."

"The Benediction is our answer. You will be charged with bringing the Solar Sorcerer who will perform the Benediction of Archgenesis to the shadowland's geographic center."

[12:01:22] (35) Orradi Filia: "Oh dear Venus. One of the ultimate acts of creation..." She looks rather delighted and hopeful.
[12:03:29] (197) Lancer: "This should be interesting to watch, it will deny them a plethora of key advantages." Now that the socializing is over, Lancer feels more in his element, though still somewhat nervous.
[12:03:29] (198) Kess The Huntress: "So, the masterstroke of the campaign, making the Chase into a verdant greenland with our Mistress' blessing. This will need to be conducted with the utmost secrecy. If those slave ghosts of the dead Primordials learn of our plans..." Her tribe has always revered the Unconquered Sun as a woman, and she obviously refers to the Deathlords.
[12:04:45] (35) Orradi Filia: "We would need to keep watch at all times, and be on guard."
[12:04:46] (155) Silver Cloud: "So, playing babysitters to a sorcerer? I take it the center isn't under control from Heavenly troops, yet?" Silver Cloud looks uncertain. This didn't sound like the mission he'd hoped for.
[12:05:40] (197) Lancer: "And to prepare contingencies for if they do. A plan this delicate hangs by a thread, it is best to keep a thick cushion underneath in case it falls."
[12:05:47] (35) Orradi Filia: "Obviously not..." Filia sighs. "But if we weren't needed, we wouldn't be going..."
[12:05:49] (155) Silver Cloud: His expression changes as Kess speaks of turning the Black Chase into 'verdant greenland'. Sorcery could do that?
[12:06:23] (197) Lancer: "There is more to war than desperate charges. The noblest missions are not necessarily the most glorious, but the most needed."
[12:07:35] (35) Orradi Filia: The Serenity sidereal looks somewhat dreamy before shaking her head, an even broader grin on her lips. "Who is the sorcerer?"
[12:07:53] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Moving in celestial lions or a lunar warband with beastmen would be a bit obvious. This is s stealth mission, from what I see."
[12:08:38] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He nods in understanding, although his expression does not change. Finally, for the first time since introducing himself, he speaks again, as quietly as before. "The restless dead conglomerate at the center of the Shadowland like blood flows towards the heart. Resistance is going to be heavy at this location."
[12:08:39] (144) Milcloch Distewi: "The Benediction has been a spell that the sorcerers of Heaven have been researching and refining over time," Milcloch continues the explanation in his rumbling baritone. "And they have finally have perfected the method through which it may be employed to cleanse even shadowlands of the Black Chase's side."

"Amplified by the foci that we have captured with Heaven's armies, the Benediction will wipe out the rest of the stain of the Black Chase from Creation." He slams his fist emphatically into his meaty palm, as if to indicate the shadowland's demise.

"But keep in mind," Milcloch adds sternly, "you have a time limit. And you will have plenty of opportunity to encounter the enemy. The manses may have been secured, but the land around it has not. It is still a warzone, all the way through."

[12:09:09] (35) Orradi Filia: "..." At the words 'Stealth mission', Filia looks very, very worried.
[12:09:23] (35) Orradi Filia: "How much time do we have, Sifu?"
[12:09:55] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Master, I presume that we are to use the chaos of battle to slip our charge to the correct location, and then guard him as he enacts his rite, correct?"
[12:11:56] (197) Lancer: "...Would it be possible to engineer a distraction, something to draw their focus elsewhere?"
[12:11:57] (144) Shin Yiu: "Well, technically, you really only have to bring her there," Shin Yiu adds, raising a finger. "The sorceress, I mean. And yes, she is female. Her name is Ryshassa Krauser, and you will meet her in Sijan. A lovely, if sorrowful lady... ah, but you will see for yourself."

"In any case, you may employ stealth if you wish! But it would work just as well to merrily smash what enemies get in your way."

"It is only Ryshassa that you truly need to hide."

[12:13:32] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia looks relieved.
[12:15:24] (197) Lancer: "Hide her entirely, or just the fact that she is a Sorceress, and that we intend to unleash the spell at their heart?"
[12:15:34] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Also, as one who has lead troops into Shadowlands before, may I point out that we will not be able to breathe properly. We must conserve our resources, and not expose our power. In this, our Deathknight companion will be a great asset. I recommend stealth, but I will defer to wiser battle chiefs than I." Kess is known for leading hit and run commando raids as opposed to commanding legions.
[12:15:41] (35) Orradi Filia: "So, pretty much, like Sifu Distewi, but a solar circle sorcerer... And I'd think both, Lancer."
[12:16:22] (197) Lancer: He begins thinking of potential ways this could fail, starting with someone finding out. He gives the Deathknight a measuring look.
[12:16:27] (155) Silver Cloud: A stealthy mission with a secret weapon wasn't really his own style, Cloud ponders, but if one could lop off the head of the beast in one fell strike, then matters of personal preference would have to be left behind. As Shin Yiu finishes his explanation Cloud speaks up: "So, the Dead have not yet encountered this sorceress? Meaning that her power is still unknown to them? That would be a potent weapon in itself ... though it also means, that it hasn't been tested before, right?"
[12:18:38] (197) Lancer: "I support her idea. It seems to be the most valid fitting our circumstances."
[12:18:48] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch nods to Kess, "That is correct. You will be sailing from Sijan, up the Silver River, on the Stormdriven. You will bring Ryshassa -- you will hide and guard her, by whatever means necessary. You will penetrate into the heart of the Black Chase, and there, on the preordained day... guard her as she performs the Benediction."

"Ryshassa's true power must not be known. This is not the first time she has employed sorcery, but it is the first time she will perform the Benediction. Nonetheless, it would be best if she is not seen at all. Or if she is, that you slay those among the dead who have seen her and may report her presence."

[12:19:59] (35) Orradi Filia: "What day?"
[12:20:19] (197) Lancer: "Preordained day?"
[12:21:37] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess frowns. "If I have my way, she won't use a single mote until it's time for the benediction. It would probably be best if we were to all conceal our Exalted natures. Does not the mortuary society of Sijan send parties into the Chase to collect strange herbs and reagents for their rites? As much as it wrankles me, it seems camouflage would be our best course."
[12:21:40] (197) Lancer: "Are we going to have to walk through the Black Chase?" Such a linear mode of travel will deny himself and Filia many of their advantages.
[12:21:55] (197) Lancer: "And...hey, I was about to suggest that..."
[12:22:08] (197) Lancer: "Well, camouflage, and not letting her cast anything at all."
[12:22:27] (197) Lancer: "I didn't know about the herbs..." he trails off.
[12:22:28] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess snorts and chuckles. "My pardons for reading your mind."
[12:22:33] (197) Lancer: Rather awkwardly
[12:22:43] (35) Orradi Filia: "... Hide our Exalted natures." She points to her brow, where the mark of Serenity stands out.
[12:22:50] (197) Lancer: "...You can't do that, can you?" He looks momentarily horrified.
[12:22:58] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess pointedly looks at Orradi.
[12:23:07] (35) Orradi Filia: "In this case, I am going to be a problem."
[12:23:13] (197) Lancer: "...Filia, would a hat work?"
[12:23:24] (35) Orradi Filia: "It's simply not just that!"
[12:23:33] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Don't use Motes. It's that simple. Can you do that? Do you have skills to sustain you without the use of Essence?"
[12:23:38] (197) Lancer: "...a really thick hat?"
[12:23:39] (155) Silver Cloud: "Well, I haven't travelled the area myself, but there are tributaries of the River of Tears in the Black Chase, are there not? The Stormdriven, my ship, will be much faster than walking. At least for a part of the way."
[12:23:50] (35) Orradi Filia: "My essence glows at even the slightly use. And I can, but it is still something to remember."
[12:24:20] (197) Lancer: "I'll avoid using Essence as much as I can."
[12:24:33] (144) Dark Siren Sally: Shin Yiu grins fangishly, "I'm no commander. I'm just the spokesperson! Do your duty as you see fit, so long as she gets where she needs to be."

"As for the time limit... well. As I understand it, the Benediction of Archgenesis may only be performed on a single day of the year. The new moon of the month of Ascending Water -- the 27th, to be exact."

"You will have two weeks to complete the journey. Two weeks in the middle of a shadowland... I don't envy you guys, you know."

[12:24:34] (198) Kess The Huntress: To Orradi - "I'm sure Venus chose you for all of your talents. You'll do fine, all of you."
[12:24:56] (144) Shin Yiu: Shin Yiu grins fangishly, "I'm no commander.

[12:24:58] (197) Lancer: "Will we have any support?"
[12:25:34] (35) Orradi Filia: "I suspect not."
[12:26:43] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He lowers his gaze slightly, eyes downcast, before speaking again. "The savage forces of the dead that make up the army of the Black Chase will not pause to ask. It is much simpler for them to slay anyone carrying the touch of life, and recruit them in their ranks following death. As long as a group carries the unmistakenable scent of the living, I believe it will be difficult to conceal that group's presence."

"I suspect the only chance is to conceal the importance of such a group, rather than its presence."

[12:26:43] (198) Kess The Huntress: "You know, the loaning of Hearthstones for those of us who do not own manses would be exceptionally useful. Also, arrangements will need to be made for potable food and water, since in the Chase, everything will be dead. There wil be no hunting or foraging."
[12:27:04] (197) Lancer: "That will be another worry."
[12:27:06] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess nods in agreement.
[12:28:05] (197) Lancer: "...Not that I know how to hunt anything anyway."
[12:28:42] (35) Orradi Filia: "Doesn't your bureau train its own in archery?"
[12:28:48] (197) Lancer: "Supplies for two weeks...traveling mostly through thick forest on foot..."
[12:28:50] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud's voice is a little sharper than necessary as he replies to the problem brought up the Magister: "The Stormdriven is fast and can be quite stealthy. Either they won't see us or they won't catch us."
[12:29:03] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess chuckles. "I'll teach you, assuming we survive this. You can see the beauty of the Unconquered Sun as she dances in the auroras of the northern ice."
[12:29:12] (197) Lancer: "I can shoot a bow, but I'd probably scare the deer away."
[12:29:29] (197) Lancer: "...I've never been that far North. Is it really that beautiful?"
[12:29:38] (35) Orradi Filia: "Yes."
[12:29:40] (144) Milcloch Distewi: "Kess the Sun Wolf commands a talon of Heaven's elite troops. They will serve to supplement your own abilities."

"In the meantime, the rest of Heaven's Legions in the Black Chase will continue to hold their positions. You will simply have to hide, misdirect, or fight off the rest yourselves."

[12:29:51] (35) Orradi Filia: Venus sighs wistfully.
[12:29:55] (197) Lancer: His eyes go rather wide, "I'd like to see that."
[12:30:05] (198) Kess The Huntress: "You won't scare the deer in that place, Lancer. Yes, it is. Creation is beautiful and worth seeing.
[12:30:19] (35) Orradi Filia: "But the North the most."
[12:30:38] (35) Orradi Filia: "Especially when you are able to surprise someone with a snowball."
[12:31:08] (198) Kess The Huntress: She laughs! "I'll take you both out onto the Ice, then, and we'll eat raw moose with my Godsuncle Yurgen." She refers to the famous Bull of the North.
[12:31:15] (197) Lancer: "I'm not sure any deer in that place would be edible." He thinks, "Aren't there...forest-chickens or something? I don't suppose those would be safe either."
[12:31:32] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins. "It's edible, Lancer!"
[12:31:41] (35) Orradi Filia: "I have had to cook it before."
[12:32:04] (35) Orradi Filia: "And that was before I drew the Second Breath!"
[12:32:06] (197) Lancer: "I meant the Chase, not the North." He protests, "...what's a moose?"
[12:32:16] (197) Lancer: "Some sort of rodent?"
[12:32:46] (35) Orradi Filia: "..." She looks at Kess, grinning slightly.
[12:33:02] (35) Orradi Filia: In Skytongue, she asks, "Should we tell him?"
[12:33:07] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess laughs a booming laugh! "No, it's a noble animal, friend and companion to our tribes. The moose gives his tribes life! Leather for our clothes, meat for our bellies, sinew for our bows."
[12:33:08] (197) Lancer: "I know that grin!" D:
[12:33:11] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He nods to Silver Cloud, acknowledging the remark. "I did not mean to offend your vessel at all. I was mostly referring to the part of the trip that will require land travel."
[12:33:44] (197) Lancer: "So...a large, noble rodent?" He guesses, picturing some sort of immense, mustached vole.
[12:33:44] (198) Kess The Huntress: In skytongue, she replies, "He'll find out. Onto business."
[12:33:46] (35) Orradi Filia: "Awww." She pouts slightly, but then shrugs. "She speaks the truth. I was just going to tell you to wait and see."
[12:34:05] (35) Orradi Filia: She nods in agreement, still grinning.
[12:34:07] (144) Shin Yiu: "Concerning food and all the rest, why do you think I'm here?" Shin Yiu chuckles, his fox-like ears twitching, "I've got the paperwork you need. You'll have a store of food, though I admit it'll be quite bland... but it'll be nourishing."

"Nothing like your ...moose... or is it meece? Really, I have no idea." He scratches his head bemusedly. "Now which of you are lacking a Hearthstone?"

[12:34:50] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Master Shin, that's me. I will return any stone upon completion of the mission."
[12:35:00] (35) Orradi Filia: She laughs. "You already know about the Bower, Master Yiu."
[12:36:22] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud's eyes narrow as the Deathknight addresses him directly. Almost more unnerving than his presence is his politeness - he can't even justifiably be angry in public! With a sour face he replies: "Ah, yes. A MAP would be useful in the planning ..."
[12:37:21] (197) Lancer: "We need a full and current terrain map."
[12:37:50] (197) Lancer: "Complete with intelligence regarding enemy patrols and the layout of their forces, preferably something magical and self-updating."
[12:38:08] (198) Kess The Huntress: "As well as a full division of battles report in regards to currently active forces of both sides in the area, and a geomantic map as well."
[12:38:35] (197) Lancer: "Oh, yes! That would be perfect!" He claps his hands together, nearly dropping his broom.
[12:38:47] (155) Silver Cloud: His face brightens up again as he turns towards Shin Yiu. "You know I don't have any real estate, up here or otherwise. Though so far I haven't been *lacking* one, exactly."
[12:38:51] (198) Kess The Huntress: "I can speak with the intelligence directorate in the Division of battles, but anyone who has connections with other bureaus, I'd request that you make use of them.
[12:39:27] (197) Lancer: "That's Filia, I don't know a lot of people."
[12:39:40] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia looks at Kess and Lancer, grinning with approval before thinking. "I'm not sure who can help, but I'll check who I know."
[12:40:50] (197) Lancer: He smiles cheerfully at her, "I know you'll be able to do it."
[12:41:02] (197) Lancer: "You're good at that sort of thing."
[12:41:19] (35) Orradi Filia: "I am a bit of a reflection of my Lady, I admit."
[12:41:57] (197) Lancer: "More than a bit!"
[12:42:33] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud grins ironically at the mention of talking to people in high positions. "Most of the people I know are alive and keep well away from Shadowlands. Though there is one guy in Sijan, who bragged about sailing into a patch of Shadow and getting out alive ..."
[12:43:35] (35) Orradi Filia: She turns red in the purple light, before looking at Silver. "I have gotten out of a few myself... But then again, that is by the Bell and the Bower's gifts."
[12:44:42] (197) Lancer: Lancer keeps quiet about his own work...after all, he knows it isn't exactly subtle, he isn't very good with assuming new identities, and he's mostly sent in to 'sweep up' with his broom.
[12:49:38] (155) Silver Cloud: "Well, I've had that misfortune before, same as you - all part of the job. But it's always good to hear from someone who knows the local waters." Cloud stops for a moment before curiosity overcomes him. "But how do bell and bower help in getting out of a Shadowland?"
[12:50:04] (197) Lancer: ...he isn't very good at covering it up, either, as the Bureau learned when he tried to explain away a six-armed, obscenity-shrieking demon as a rabid pig.
[12:50:07] (144) Shin Yiu: "Yes, yes, yes, you Chosen are all so full of your demands, aren't you..." Shin Yiu doesn't seem to mind though, despite the mock exasperation on his face.

"All righty, then..." A *poof* of silvery mist appears between his hands, forming into a very official looking document, and a pen that writes as he dictates, "Celestial Manse level three, temporary access for Kess the Sun Wolf, Sword of Heaven..." He glances towards Cloud, and slips him a crafty wink. "And Silver Cloud, my dear friend, I suppose I'll just have to help you out too, won't I."

"The maps and other documents will be arranged for ahead of time, though as the lady Wolf suggests, you might want to pull a few strings yourselves just to be sure. Especially if you're wanting 'magical'... or 'self-updating'..." Shin doesn't quite hide the snicker, after all, he hadn't lived for millenia without understanding very intimately how utterly slow Bureaucracy could be, even with the recent unification.

[12:50:19] (197) Lancer: To a crowd of bystanders.
[12:50:42] (144) Shin Yiu: ((Basically, Kess and Cloud are getting *temporary* use of a level 3 hearthstone. I'm letting you choose it, but you'll have to give it back at the end of this mission, or pay experience to keep it after.))
[12:51:29] (35) Orradi Filia: At the words "Celestial manse, level 3", Filia's eyes widen and she makes a low whistle again.
[12:53:23] (197) Lancer: "...This is big." Lancer states mildly, "That document alone...could it maybe prove to people the sheer depth of our urgency?"
[12:54:16] (197) Lancer: "If mine gave out more than one Hearthstone, I'd share...I'm sorry."
[12:54:43] (35) Orradi Filia: "Bureaucracy?" She cracks her knuckles. "I'm good with that."
[12:54:54] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud stands up and gives an overly dramatic bow. "This Quicksilver Falcon much appreciates the gifts of Heaven, especially when they come so conveniently well timed with a dangerous mission," he states pompously.
[12:55:09] (197) Lancer: "I'm sure you two won't have trouble."
[12:56:17] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch clears his throat, the sound of it booming in the large chamber. "Might I also remind you, you will be departing early the next day to Sijan. Or if you prefer, when next the Barque returns to the Quay of Dawn," he clarifies, for those who are unused to the strangeness of Heaven's 'days' and 'nights'.

"So what preparations you have left to do must be completed before then."

[12:56:48] (198) Kess The Huntress: "I usually ask for Ahlat's ministers to help me with reports. The war of desks is one field of battle in which I am lacking."
[12:57:09] (197) Lancer: "...I'm bad with papers." Lancer really isn't a very good Sidereal at all.
[12:58:03] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Thank you, Master. We will be ready."
[12:58:18] (35) Orradi Filia: "I was surprised at that I was decent at it..." She sighs. "But anyways, Lancer, you are still one of the best martial artists of us younger sidereals."
[12:58:32] (35) Orradi Filia: "I'll be ready as well, Sifu." She bows.
[12:58:50] (144) Shin Yiu: Shin Yiu returns the pompousness with equal bombast, sketching a flashy bow towards Cloud. He doesn't have the hat, of course, but the wide sleeves of his robes serve almost just as well.

"Yes, well. Favors are favors, and we've known each other a long time. As for Kess... well, I've got quite the respect for wolves, 'specially pretty ones. I'm sure you'll make good use of the boon."

[12:59:18] (197) Lancer: "...am not." Lancer turns scarlet and bows his head.
[12:59:45] (35) Orradi Filia: "Says the man who keeps defeating me in sparring matches."
[01:00:02] (197) Lancer: "Your boobs keep falling out of the outfit!"
[01:00:04] (35) Orradi Filia: "And can at least survive more than ten seconds with my sifu."
[01:00:12] (197) Lancer: "Er...I mean, eep..." ._.
[01:00:25] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess snorts at that, but smiles. It's the nature of foxes to flirt.
[01:00:49] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins. "So?"
[01:00:49] (197) Lancer: "Besides, I just practice a lot, and the moves are easy to predict."
[01:00:51] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud manages to choke back a bout of laughter just in time.
[01:00:53] (35) Orradi Filia: "You still win."
[01:01:04] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Well, then. Let us get to work. We have much to prepare."
[01:01:15] (35) Orradi Filia: She isn't blushing one bit. IN fact, she looks horribly smug.
[01:01:31] (197) Lancer: On the other hand, HE is blushing IMMENSELY.
[01:01:48] (35) Orradi Filia: "And need I remind you of you and Gateway matches?"
[01:02:01] (197) Lancer: "...O_O"
[01:02:15] (144) Milcloch Distewi: "Hmph..." Despite the non-committal grunt, Milcloch does grin... just a little. Barely enough that only Filia, who is used to his moods, really notices.

"You'll have plenty of time to test your abilities when you've landed in Creation. Any more questions, then, before we adjourn?"

[01:02:28] (35) Orradi Filia: She leans forward, grinning. "So, stop blushing and get used to it. And try not to choke."
[01:02:45] (197) Lancer: His face, by now, is almost as red as his eyes.
[01:02:49] (35) Orradi Filia: She stands back up, looking at her sifu. "I have none. Everyone else seems to find the questions I have.
[01:03:23] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He nods sharply at the Sidereal's orders, and seems to straightens. "I will be ready, Master Distewi. Where should we assemble, when the time comes?" He would be ready before dawn, since he does not have much to prepare, or anything else to do but prepare for battle. After all, he is little more than a weapon of the Celestial Bureaucracy, at this point.

His features soften slightly at the verbal sparring between the other Exalts, a hint of a smile seeming to ripple behind his pale features. How easy it is to forget the boons of life.

[01:03:42] (198) Kess The Huntress: Hm
[01:04:31] (197) Lancer: "...it's not MY fault I'm good at Gateway..."
[01:04:46] (198) Kess The Huntress: "There's also my personal squad - a fang of Icewalker Dragon Bloods and lesser war gods lent to me by the bureau. I'm wondering if they'd be useful." (OOC - Command 2)
[01:05:05] (35) Orradi Filia: In a sweet voice, she goes "'Two out of three, winner gets first~"
[01:05:28] (197) Lancer: "you promised you wouldn't tell anyone!"
[01:05:36] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess says dryly, "I'll judge that match." She smiles.
[01:06:01] (35) Orradi Filia: She laughs. "It's not what you think, Kess."
[01:06:09] (197) Lancer: He tries to smile back, though his face feels like it's been pressed to an oven.
[01:06:12] (35) Orradi Filia: "So very not what you think."
[01:06:25] (155) Silver Cloud: "It isn't? What are we thinking then?"
[01:06:26] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Oh, of course not. All business and paperwork, Vizier."
[01:06:32] (197) Lancer: "...Wait, what IS she thinking?"
[01:06:56] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins.
[01:07:11] (35) Orradi Filia: "Maybe if we all survive, I'll show you all."
[01:07:16] (197) Lancer: O_O
[01:07:37] (35) Orradi Filia: "And I didn't promise not to tell, Lancer."
[01:07:59] (35) Orradi Filia: "For Lady Venus's sake, I just didn't say I wouldn't shout about it." She shrugs.
[01:08:19] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch is meanwhile keeping a very neutral face now, about the banter. "Filia," he says a little warningly, though not totally seriously. She'd always be a little bit of a rascal, he supposed.

To Kess he says, "Naturally, they would be exceptionally useful, if you believe they would be willing to join this mission." He expected initially that Kess would request the talon. But she'd be more comfortable commanding her own personal troops.

[01:08:42] (197) Lancer: "..." Lancer's poor, poor innocence...
[01:08:51] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins at her sifu, and blows a kiss just to make things worse.
[01:08:57] (197) Lancer: Well, sort-of innocence. Darned Bluesids.
[01:09:01] (35) Orradi Filia: "It's not nice to gossip, after all, Lancer."
[01:09:34] (197) Lancer: ;_;
[01:10:05] (144) Shin Yiu: "Well, at least they've got spunk! Keep it up, you'll be surrounded by dead things and noxious air for weeks, once you're outta here."

Shin Yiu's smile shows he's very much relieved he's the one staying in Heaven.

[01:10:07] (35) Orradi Filia: She walks around the table and pats his head again. "You need to learn to be more social, sweetie."
[01:10:37] (197) Lancer: "But that's the only time people don't make sense!" D:
[01:10:37] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Master, of course, I'd only take volunteers, but my men and women are brave beyond a shadow of a doubt. I will speak with them tonight."
[01:10:43] (35) Orradi Filia: "Well, going in reminds one where Serenity truly is."
[01:11:03] (197) Lancer: "It's not my fault I don't notice these things..."
[01:11:30] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud just shakes his head and grins. A servant of Venus indeed.
[01:12:09] (197) Lancer: "I should probably prepare some potential strategies...and get my Gateway set...and discuss that idea about masquerading as herb-gatherers with Lady Wolf..."
[01:12:23] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins right back at everyone. "Anyways, I should do prayers in the Bower before leaving..." She sighs.
[01:13:03] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch shakes his head ponderously. He finds himself fortunate that Wayang is infinitely patient. After all, all things must end.

"Enough. I think that we've covered everything that must be covered until now. I will be accompanying you until Sijan. We will meet with a colleague of mine, and the sorceress, Ryshassa. From there you will depart upon the Stormdriven."

[01:13:04] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Then come with me, Lancer. If I am bring my soldiers, then you are the second in command, as you are a Chosen of Battles. We'll go over your plans."
[01:13:06] (35) Orradi Filia: "If you need to find me, the Bower isn't too hard to find."
[01:14:19] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess salutes and bows her head to the three superiors. "With your permission, I go to prepare." If this was the tent of the bull, she'd just tell him. But Heaven has it's protocols.
[01:14:20] (197) Lancer: "Oh! Okay...where are you staying?"
[01:14:26] (35) Orradi Filia: "Oh Maidens, you and someone else who is equally depressed? I'm bringing celestial wine."
[01:15:04] (197) Lancer: Lancer, outside of tactics and combat, can sometimes be as oblivious as a brick.
[01:15:05] (35) Orradi Filia: She is grinning, obviously teasing as she bows one last time.
[01:15:11] (144) Wayang, God of Silence: And Wayang himself reemerges, the slits of light that represent his eyes blinking once, twice, impassive to the passions of the mortals before him.

It is near fifty years since Taru-Han has disappeared from her post, Wayang signs. There is something of an urgency in the delivery, borne of regret or frustration -- perhaps both. Those who keep up in even some minor way with Celestial politics will know that just before Taru-Han's disappearance, she had been subjected to a major, invasive audit that may very well have stripped her of both her position as Shogun of the Department of Abstract Matters and her duty to maintain the Wheel of Souls. It is up to those of your caliber to do the job she has been rendered incapable of.

Go now. May you bring many souls back to the fold, and a fitting end to the Black Chase.

[01:15:16] (197) Lancer: And it takes a hammer to get his attention.
[01:15:19] (155) Silver Cloud: "Well, one question I do have, though it is one for my fellow agents: Have any of you experience in nautical matters? Because my crew is brave, but asking normal people to accompany us into a Shadowland is a bit much ..."
[01:15:50] (35) Orradi Filia: "I do not."
[01:16:17] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Lancer, I normally barrack at the pagoda of the Division of Battles, but I also have an apartment at my Sifu Ahlat's palace. Cloud, I've only seen the sea a few times. But I can breathe underwater if I need to. Elements don't bother me much."
[01:16:18] (35) Orradi Filia: She begins to go to the door, murmuring to herself, obviously a prayer.
[01:16:51] (144) Storyteller: ((ok, once you've finished off your conversations, each of you give me a pose as to what you're doing before departing for Sijan the next day. Preparations, prayers, whatever it may be.))
[01:17:03] (197) Lancer: "I've never actually seen the sea before..."
[01:17:09] (197) Lancer: "So, the pagoda, then?"
[01:19:06] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia's main doings involve gathering as much information about the Chase that she can, and getting a map just in case, praying to Venus, running around about to tidy up affairs, and getting an empty bottle of Celestial Wine as a joke.
[01:19:10] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud sighs. "I see. Well, we'll manage."
[01:20:55] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess, first, finds her talon of warriors. She lays it out plainly for them - they will be assisting with a mission of utmost importance into the black chase. It is strictly volunteer only. Then, working with Lancer, she goes over any tactical plans, maps, and other intelligence, making sure to get the latest division reports.
[01:22:20] (198) Kess The Huntress: Finally, she coordinates with Silver Cloud in regards to supplies and provisions. That dawn, after awakening, she offers prayer and sacrifice to the Unconquered Sun and the other Incarna, praying for blessing in battle and asking for the strength to keep her charges safe.
[01:24:27] (155) Silver Cloud: ((Cloud will have his weapon and other equipment checked, get fresh ammunition, work with Kess in organising the transport on the Stormdriven and use a map to plan out the route we'll be taking))
[01:25:55] (165) Redoubtable Magister: "I have no true experience with matters of the Navy or manning a ship." He states, to answer Silver Cloud's question. Not that he would expect the Chosen to trust him with anything related to his ship...

With that, he bows again to everyone in attendance, then starts to take a step back and towards the door. The night would involve him returning to the quarters assigned to him by Heaven, no doubt under quiet surveillance - and a lot of reflection on the coming mission and what it would represent. Sitting in his chambers, he would spend his time in quiet solitude, pondering his role in this undertaking - in his mind, it springs with almost supernatural clarity. He would protect their charge, as well as those that distrust him, with his very life.

For the first time since the infamous rescue mission that had brought him to Heaven, he would stand against the very minions he used to command.

He would show them no quarter.

[01:26:46] (197) Lancer: Lancer assists Kess, using his knowledge of tactics and his inventive mind to good effect, readng patterns and motivations into the figures before him and coming up with counterstrategies, working late into the night if necessary.
[01:26:54] (155) Silver Cloud: ((he'll also accept the offer of a Hearthstone and familiarise himself with it))
[01:28:18] (197) Lancer: He offers a prayer to Mars the next morning, praying for clarity of sight and precision of arm...and most importantly, for courage and steadiness of purpose.
[01:28:42] (35) Orradi Filia: Also, Filia probably would be the first person at the meeting place, all set up.
[01:33:30] (144) Storyteller: ((also, Kess and Lancer, give me hrm... an int+war roll. to reflect your initial planning. take a +1 stunt each.))
[01:37:46] (198) Kess The Huntress: [8d10] => [3,1,9,2,7,2,2,7] = (33)
[01:38:33] (197) Lancer: [13d10] => [3,10,2,8,7,9,8,1,7,2,10,8,10] = (85)
[01:38:35] (198) Kess The Huntress: ((3 sux here))
[01:38:49] (197) Lancer: (12 sux here :3))
[01:39:09] (155) Silver Cloud: ((Wow, Lancer is REALLY good!))
[01:39:35] (198) Kess The Huntress: ((Yes, he is. Wait until I buy up my INT though and lead my barbarian horde!))
[01:40:09] (197) Lancer: ((He didn't get Exalted for his aggressive tendencies and high Presence, that's for sure :P))
[01:41:06] (197) Lancer: ((Lancer probably marked up one of the maps like a Gateway board))

Yu Shan - En Route to Sijan

13th of Ascending Water

On the hour that the Golden Barque begins its westward journey once more, Shin Yiu and Milcloch meet your group at the nearest gold lane canal adjacent to the Bureau of Endings. Shin Yiu provides the requisite travel paperwork before waving the group an energetic goodbye, while the Chosen of Endings steps stoically into the dragon boat along with you, explaining gruffly that he will accompany you until Sijan. With the documents and the high Sidereal presence among them, the Soul Collectors have no problem passing inspections -- though the Magister's presence undoubtedly disturbs both auditors and populace alike.

The boat ride to the Sijan gate is uneventful, so dizzyingly swift as to leave the eye little time to take in, much less enjoy the sight of the heavenly metropolis. Disembarking just before the gate, the celestial lions nod you through without complaint, though six pairs of large, unblinking eyes remain trained upon your backs until you disappear into the mundane world beyond.

[01:50:03] (197) Lancer: Lancer plays Gateway with whoever is available, he seems rather cheerful now that he's actually going into the mission.
[01:50:14] (155) Silver Cloud: With a flourish Cloud puts his hat back on his head as he steps through the gate. "Ahh, home. The good old Terrestrial has us back!"
[01:50:39] (197) Lancer: "...I hope my Manses haven't gotten too dusty..."
[01:51:33] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess familiarizes Lancer with her men and women - 4 Dragon Bloods and 2 God Bloods, from the 4 corners of Creation. All are experienced commandoes and skirmishers who have experience fighting the undead.
[01:51:47] (155) Silver Cloud: On the boat ride Cloud does play Gateway with Lancer - and loses, naturally.
[01:52:31] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess is the only person who can provide an even credible challenge, but she no doubt is crushed (7 dice)
[01:53:23] (165) Redoubtable Magister: The Magister has arrived really early, having no other tasks or focuses to attend to. Dressed like the night before, he carries with him an armor pack undoubtedly filled to the brim, the only real possession he seems to carry for the mission. Once again, he bows to the assembled others , silently taking his place within the transport and peering at the dizzying landscape meanwhile.
[01:54:13] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud laughs. "It is an interesting game, though I'm afraid I have no talent at all for it."
[01:54:39] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia breaks off to show how pathetic she can be as well at Gateway.
[01:54:48] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Neither do I. Real warfare isnt that neat."
[01:55:31] (35) Orradi Filia: "I do like to get my hands dirty myself." Filia hovers over to watch them play.
[01:55:45] (197) Lancer: "Of course not, but the important thing is to view it as a microcosmic representation. People and wars are both masses of conflict. If you can predict the flow, winning isn't so hard."
[01:55:47] (155) Silver Cloud: "I don't know about warfare, but I do know ship-to-ship combat. And that's mostly about being the more scary guy than your opposite number. Psychological warfare and a few well-aimed shots."
[01:56:24] (198) Kess The Huntress: "I tend to trust my gut more about these things."
[01:56:51] (197) Lancer: "All of those things are factors to be considered, as well as the extent to which the enemy relies on them."
[01:57:06] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch does not join in the games, a near equally brooding counterpart to the silent Deathknight. Returning to Creation always brings a mein of grim sorrow to his face, for his good memories of home are marred by the reminder of how much has been lost.
[01:58:56] (35) Orradi Filia: ( Filia would be willing to try too)
[01:59:22] (35) Orradi Filia: ... After about two minutes, she loses.
[01:59:23] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Just to let you all know, Heaven holds two third of the manses in the Chase. Once we disembark, we can expect to encounter units of undead lead by Nemissaries with powerful war bodies, and most likely Abyssal Exals as well. If we're lucky, we won't encounter any. I want to move quickly and quieltly, since we will be on the enemy's home ground."
[02:00:25] (197) Lancer: Lancer doesn't go easy on Filia, but he does drag the game out a little for the sake of his friend.
[02:01:12] (197) Lancer: "Are we still planning to act as frightened Sijanese?"
[02:01:26] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud pats the revolver at his right side. "If a confrontation does occur I can't guarantee quiet, but we can certainly try to avoid any fights."
[02:01:31] (35) Orradi Filia: "Stop teasing. It's not pleasant after a while in any situation."
[02:01:37] (197) Lancer: "If so...remember, we don't fight if we can run, galling as it is. Our mission is more important."
[02:02:05] (35) Orradi Filia: "I think I can help, but it will... rather foul our chances of stealth."
[02:02:10] (197) Lancer: "I'm sorry, Filia, I just don't want you to feel bad..."
[02:02:46] (155) Silver Cloud: "I'm not sure the act will fool anyone. We'll be deep into the Shadowland before it becomes an issue and by then the story will seem highly unlikely."
[02:03:02] (35) Orradi Filia: "I knew I'd lose. Why do you think I entertain myself in different ways?"
[02:03:16] (198) Kess The Huntress: "I'd expect as much. Our primary consideration is to protect our charge and see to it that she carries out her assignment. All else is secondary. We are expendable in this regard."
[02:03:44] (35) Orradi Filia: She glances at her Sifu, "And if I truly wanted an unpleasant experience of losing, I'd spar with Sifu."
[02:05:45] (197) Lancer: "I trust your judgement." Lancer smiles at Kess.
[02:06:27] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Thank you."
[02:06:32] (144) Milcloch Distewi: "Pain makes one stronger," Milcloch says simply, "As does knowing your limits."

He is a rather merciless teacher, but only because he believes in conveying the true reality of combat.

[02:06:52] (35) Orradi Filia: "I know, but it doesn't keep it from hurting."
[02:06:52] (165) Redoubtable Magister: "Some measure of battle is sadly unavoidable." He says, speaking for the first time today, eyes still affixed on the scenery outside. "The Dead's main tactic has always been to fight in swarms and overwhelm with sheer numbers. With the Wheel broken, this tactic has become all the more effective, especially if used against mortal troops not so tempered against the effects of having to strike down a creature wearing a loved one's face."

"Misdirection might not be so succesful, but that does not mean sir Lancer's words are unwise. Cutting a path through the swarm to be able to flee through and move forward would work well against the legions of the Damned."

[02:07:46] (144) Storyteller:

Sijan - By the River of Tears

Sijan has a long history of remaining neutral to the various wars and disputes of Creation's myriad nations, advocating the concept of death as the great equalizer: all living things, without fail, must eventually die. It is only with the sudden and catastrophic failure of the Wheel of Souls that the Funereal City has relinquished its millenia of neutrality, becoming one of the premier bastions of the Celestial Legions upon Creation. To this purpose, a substantial number of training centers, barracks and military clinics have been erected within and around the city, mingling with the stolid marble crypts and mausoleum towers that have already been standing in Sijan for centuries.

Already well-acquainted with the rites, habits and characteristics of the dead, many of the priests, morticians and exorcists residing in Sijan have offered up their expertise in combating the armies of the Underworld. Among them is the colleague Milcloch spoke of during his mission briefing: Alexsei Krauser, known to some as the Lethe Gatekeeper, and to others as the Black Wing of Conclusion, having already sent an untold amount of souls to the Wheel before its Breaking. Since then, he has become the Director of Soul Collection in the Convention of Wood, overseeing the training, organization and deployment of Soul Collectors and their various auxiliaries in the East. They have successfully held back the expansion of the Black Chase south of the river Avarice for decades, even as the shadowland has continued to expand northward, swallowing several smaller shadowlands in its wake and threatening what remains of the northeastern Linowan Nation.

Milcloch has already sent word ahead to Alexsei that your group would be meeting with him on the docks facing the River of Tears, where the Stormdriven is currently moored. It is a single-masted cutter, sleek and fast, perfect for the river journey ahead. A sparse but highly skilled crew of five are already aboard, testing riggings and sails while about a fang of Kess's warriors mill on the deck, annoying them with their incessant curiosity and marked disinterest in actually helping the process. The helmsman, a surly, tattooed Tya with dark blue hair cropped short, lets out a whoop of greeting as soon as she spies her captain among the group on the docks.

Few other vessels remain docked along with the Stormdriven -- several war galleys in reserve, and coastal trade ships carrying precious supplies for the soldiers. This is no bustling port; few who stop in Sijan wish to dwell there, and those that do are often there expecting to die, whether of old age or in battle.

[02:12:01] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud lifts a hand in greeting to his crew and is the first aboard the ship, inviting the others to follow him. His gruff tone is belied by a smirk that tugs at one corner of his mouth as he addresses his people: "Report."
[02:12:21] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess snaps her fingers, and her rangy band of commandoes forms up around her. She whispers to them, informing them that she will brief them later, and to not get into the crew's way. They have their own jobs to do, preparing anti-undead thaumaturgy, reviewing maps, and other preparations for another harrowing mission.
[02:14:32] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia keeps mainly quiet, watching everyone patiently.
[02:15:30] (144) Fal Ituso: "Not terribly much to report, cap'n, except a whole lot of creepy," Fal Ituso replies smartly. "Can't say I feel all that excited about sailing right into that dark mess, but we'll follow you wherever you'll take us, sir. Even into the jaws of death itself."

The other crewmen nod their assent, fists pumping the air with a wordless shout before continuing their various duties.

[02:15:48] (197) Lancer: Lancer continues reviewing strategies in his head, trying hard to stay out of everyone's way, knowing that they probably know how to do their jobs much better than he does. Devoid of anything else to do...he begins sweeping, the bright-white bristles of his broom seeming to actually ELIMINATE any dust or dirt, instead of just removing it, the wood looking new and polished in his wake.
[02:18:18] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch does not board, instead approaching the pair awaiting them just beyond the Stormdriven's plank.
[02:19:37] (35) Orradi Filia: "Goodbye Sifu. Hopefully, when we return, there will be a Verdent Chase."
[02:19:38] (144) Alexsei Krauser: Alexsei Krauser is a man of distant Dynast heritage with long, straight black hair worn loose down to his waist. He is relatively tall, though lithe rather than broad, his presence instead given a certain ominous intensity through the grim wisdom in his violet, spectacle framed eyes, the tautness of his features and musculature, as if his senses are instinctively attuned to seek dangers beyond normal sight. Once an aspiring loremaster, Alexsei has seen many battles and grieved for many souls, and as such sees a kindred spirit in his colleague Milcloch, who fought, bled and wept at his side for many a decade before their duties took them seperate ways.

Nonetheless, there is a deliberate calmness to the Gatekeeper's demeanor, a dignity of bearing that keeps the silent predator at bay, and focuses his intent on the immediate goals at hand. It is this side of him that brings the smile of greeting to his face, and the gentle touch upon the back of his lady companion as he guides her across the pier to meet the visiting Soul Collectors. They are a contrasting pair, he with his dark hair draped upon white and sanguine robes, she with fine tresses of pure white cascading over a pale lavender kimono, an unspoken tenderness and sorrow evident in the body language between them.

[02:20:51] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud seems taken aback for a moment, then smiles. "Very well. I *was* going to do the whole 'explain the suicidal mission and ask for volunteers' thing, but I guess hearsay travels faster even than the heavenly gondolas. While I don't like the risk of this mission, the results will be just as spectacular. And all of you volunteering means a lot to me. Not the least," he laughs, "because none of these landrats know the first thing about handling themselves on a ship."
[02:21:31] (35) Orradi Filia: "Rumors are the fastest thing in Creation." Filia mutters.
[02:22:52] (197) Lancer: "I've never been on a ship this big before..."
[02:23:06] (197) Lancer: Lancer has, in point of fact, never been on a ship with a mast before
[02:23:27] (144) Milcloch Distewi: Milcloch nods to Filia, few words needed to convey his trust and pride in his student. "Be brave in your quest for peace. And come back alive."

He turns to Alexsei, then, clasping his forearms in greeting, a sign of great respect between oathbrothers.

[02:23:47] (35) Orradi Filia: "I intend to." She nods.
[02:24:09] (198) Kess The Huntress: Sitting with her men, all of whom volunteered before they even boarded, Kess comments, "In it's own way, Creation is more glorious than heaven."
[02:24:38] (198) Kess The Huntress: "No fear, Sifu! We will keep your girl safe."
[02:24:51] (165) Redoubtable Magister: Travelling to Sijan is almost an ordeal for him. The Magister finds himself walking with his head bowed most of the time, almost as if he is loathe to make eye contact with anyone living there. Conflicting emotions well in him, although he does his best not to show it - feelings of shame at the path he has undertaken, with everything this place represents.

Nonetheless, it is with great respect that he bows to the pair, dropping his pack to the ground soundlessly as he does so.

[02:25:24] (144) Alexsei Krauser: "It is good to see you safe and well, Milcloch," Alexsei says softly, before turning to let his violet gaze sweep over the gathered group. "And you must be the ones. The Collectors who will serve in the Black Chase Benediction."

He pauses then, and bows smoothly to the group gathering on the Stormdriven, a formal introduction. "I am Alexsei Krauser, and this is my wife, Ryshassa."

[02:25:36] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia looks worried at the Magister and begins hovering near him.
[02:25:42] (144) Ryshassa Krauser: The woman introduced as Ryshassa bows deeply in response. She is petite and slender, only a shade taller than Lancer, her features delicate and porcelain pale. Though her knee-length hair is as white as snow, her visage is neither old nor young -- unnervingly ageless, but not unpleasant to look upon. Her eyes are almond-shaped, the irises a strange shade of sunset orange that seems almost out of place in their vibrancy. Despite her outward fragility, she radiates a quiet, unmistakable power, a mastery over Essence that is nearly palpable even to those who cannot naturally sense it.
[02:26:06] (155) Silver Cloud: "Aye, the Stormdriven is a sleek little thing, isn't she? But big? You haven't seen big until you've been on an armed trader out of Nexus or seen a Lookshy Battleship. The good lady here," he puts a hand on the mast, " is veritably miniscule in comparison. But she is fast, oh yes! Very fast ..."
[02:26:20] (197) Lancer: Filia has her sifu, Cloud is with his people and Kess with hers, Lancer takes note of the newcomers, careful note, but nonetheless...this is why he avoids people.
[02:26:20] (35) Orradi Filia: At hearing the introductions, she bows in return.
[02:26:36] (197) Lancer: He continues his sweeping off in a quiet corner, humming softly.
[02:26:57] (197) Lancer: "I'm sure it is. Quite fast."
[02:28:00] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess stands, and extends her hand, in the Northern manner, now that they are out of Yu Shan. "I am Kess the Sun Wolf, Dawn Chosen of Sol, of the Icewalker people. It is my responsibility and priveledge to protect you during this mission. My people and I will be your shield during what is to come.
[02:29:14] (35) Orradi Filia: "Orradi Filia, though I'm sure Sifu has told you horror stories about my childhood." She bows again, smiling slightly. "Hopefully, I can smooth things out and bear witness to the rebirth of the Chase."
[02:29:34] (155) Silver Cloud: Silver Cloud returns the bow. "Greetings! Come aboard if you wish, captain Silver Cloud at your service."
[02:29:37] (198) Kess The Huntress: "As will no doubt the other members of my Circle, in their own ways. They will no doubt introduce themselves." Her gesture towards the other exalts pointedly includes the Magister.
[02:30:04] (144) Fal Ituso: "Y'got that right," Fal says brightly to Lancer, "she cuts through the waves like a hot knife through butter. A challenge and a pleasure to sail, and we'll need it, up that river, there." She squints northward.

"To chase our enemies, or pursue 'em as the case may be..." She'd heard something of the plan, and of the lady they'd be escorting, as well. It was just these kind of crazy stunts that kept her sticking along with Cloud.

[02:31:09] (155) Silver Cloud: "They won't see us coming until we're right in their face," Cloud grins.
[02:32:37] (35) Orradi Filia: "No, they won't see us until they find themselves surrounded by very smug, and very nasty elementals in a reborn land."
[02:32:44] (144) Alexsei Krauser: Alexsei nods at the introductions, and smiles gratefully toward Kess. "I am thankful for the protection that you will offer her. For she is my greatest treasure."

"She has sacrificed much to achieve the powers in her grasp. The Benediction will surely be an unprecedented miracle to lay your eyes upon."

"And so," he guides Ryshassa gently to the plank, "I entrust my beloved to you."

[02:33:04] (197) Lancer: "If we're lucky, we won't even see them." He mumbles, but sighs, "Too lucky to count on."
[02:33:09] (35) Orradi Filia: She grins slightly, though she doesn't look at all confident.
[02:33:51] (198) Kess The Huntress: "All right! Since it will be a bit before we disembar, my men and I will instruct you all on survival and stealth protocols. I know that not all of you are rangers, but there are things which the undead will search for. While we will smell of life to them, not expending motes and keeping cold camp will minimize our chances of being seen. This gentleman is entrusting his love to us. Keep that in mind!" Kess' full commander's charisma is coming forth as she makes her speech.
[02:34:10] (144) Ryshassa Krauser: Ryshassa takes the proffered hand, but still does not speak. She seems to understand the northerner etiquette without a second's hesitation, and return's Kess's gesture fluidly.
[02:34:36] (197) Lancer: "I'll d-do my best..." NOW he's getting nervous.
[02:34:46] (198) Kess The Huntress: She smiles. "Thank you for trusting us with your life, sister Lawgiver."
[02:34:51] (197) Lancer: Not really from the chance of undead, but from the pressure.
[02:35:36] (197) Lancer: After all, he prepared strenuously. But what if he missed something? What if he messed up?
[02:35:41] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia actaully looks at ease, but she doesn't say a word as she chooses to stand near Ryshassa to help keep an eye on her.
[02:36:32] (197) Lancer: Sweep. Sweep. Sweepsweep. Sweepsweepsweepsweepsweep...
[02:36:46] (165) Redoubtable Magister: He does not meet the man's eyes at first, though he lifts his gaze, slowly, at the words the Black Wing of Conclusion speaks. Such a heavy burden to entrust, Master Krauser. He straightens, and regards Ryshassa before returning his gaze to her husband.

"No more should be separated by this conflict." He says, softly. "On my life, your wife will return to you safely."

[02:37:15] (197) Lancer: "A-archers, be at the ready. Watch the water as well as the banks, especially where the river is deepish."
[02:37:26] (197) Lancer: He speaks a little quietly.
[02:38:03] (197) Lancer: ...he doesn't have the charisma for real command, apparently, "You know...since they don't really...er...need to breathe..."
[02:38:21] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess and her sergeant exchange looks, and one of the troopers gets an elbow in the ribs, as the boy knows what he is talking about. Kess merely nods in assent.
[02:39:12] (197) Lancer: That boy is fully grown-up and an adult...but probably younger than Kess anyway.
[02:39:27] (197) Lancer: ...and nowhere near as self-confident
[02:40:41] (197) Lancer: "Now, this is...I think...a logical route into the Chase. It m-might be trapped." He realizes people are -looking- at him, and panics a little, "Watch out for that."
[02:41:35] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia nods quietly, and glances at Kess with a weary look.
[02:42:20] (144) Sun Wolf's Fang: Kess's assembled soldiers... two Wood Aspects, an Air and a Water, and two godblooded owing their heritage to the proud hunter deities of the wilderness, give their assent to her command. They are volunteers, after all, and so they are suffused with pride for being chosen, and a deep desire to ensure the success of their mission.

They have some trepidation about following the commands of such a cowardly advisor, but nonetheless keep judgment to themselves in the face of Kess's very pointed insistence. The fellow that was jabbed tries very hard not to look like he is in pain.

[02:43:17] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia takes a deep breath "I'm going to go under to hide my anima until we get in. I want to give everyone fair warning, just in case."
[02:44:01] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess looks to Cloud, waiting until he has a moment to enact Lancer's suggestion. He won't learn real self confidence until he's thrown into a crisis, which she is certain will come soon.
[02:44:50] (35) Orradi Filia: Her caste mark burns brightly all of a sudden, but she takes a bandanna of sky blue and covers it. ((6m for Prior Warning.))
[02:45:38] (155) Silver Cloud: Cloud nods at Lancer's assessment. "That does make sense. We'll go over the maps with my navigator once we're on the way."
[02:46:46] (197) Lancer: "Alright."
[02:47:12] (197) Lancer: "The first few encampments will be weakened, remember that."
[02:48:44] (197) Lancer: "If they've buried chains below the water's surface...we need a plan in case of that, I've read about that trick being used before, and our own speed would work against us."
[02:49:12] (155) Silver Cloud: Though he doesn't say anything out loud, Cloud swears the same to himself. It is strange, very strange to hear one of Death's champions speak such words and even more confusing to know with certainty, that he has no ulterior motive in doing so. Maybe all this talk of him being different was more than just a ploy? But then, even honesty could sometimes be a weapon ...
[02:49:31] (35) Orradi Filia: "We'll get some prior warning."
[02:50:06] (35) Orradi Filia: "I know a few charms to allow such."
[02:50:50] (197) Lancer: Lancer, meanwhile, is still sure he's missed something. "Um...Kess?"
[02:51:18] (155) Silver Cloud: "Blocking chains ... we'll keep a lookout for such devices as best we can." Cloud eyes Filia's burning Castemark curiously. "And help from those who know the future is certainly appreciated."
[02:51:27] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Yes?"
[02:51:36] (198) Kess The Huntress: "What have you got?"
[02:52:07] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess is letting everyone else work out how they want to contribute, for now, before issuing her orders to her men.
[02:52:54] (197) Lancer: "Nothing, I'm just wondering if there's anything I've forgotten." ._.
[02:53:26] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Only you can know that. But let me check what you have. Two pairs of eyes are better than one."
[02:54:06] (198) Kess The Huntress: Kess checks over the maps and recommendations that Lancer has made. She is loathe to push too hard, since they are in the water and this is Cloud's show.
[02:56:32] (197) Lancer: He points out his insights, and does his best to explain them, although some are almost intuition.
[02:58:04] (197) Lancer: "Think of it as a game of Gateway. If you know the mind of your opponent, you can predict their actions. Especially when you know what, essentially, they want. So match that up with their actions..."
[02:58:49] (144) Storyteller: (( ok, teamwork says that you roll the highest pool among you and add +1 to that pool per person giving aid))
[03:02:49] (155) Silver Cloud: [16d10] => [3,5,1,2,2,8,8,5,6,2,4,7,3,2,7,5] = (70)
[03:08:49] (144) Alexsei Krauser: Alexsei, for a moment, gazes down towards Ryshassa before relinquishing her to the others. They do not seem to need to communicate with words at all. He touches her cheek, and the soft pale white of her hair, before stepping back.

"I will leave you to your preparations. There is little left to speak of to you, except to wish you luck. But do not throw your lives away needlessly. We have entrusted you with this mission -- but more than anything, life is rare upon Creation today, and we need brave souls like you, to fight and continue to thrive. If faced with utter defeat or the chance to escape, then by all means, escape. It will mean we will lose the chance for the Benediction, but we cannot have every one of your souls strengthening the armies of the dead."

"I believe that will not be necessary, though. You have been chosen for this task for a reason. Trust each other, and trust yourselves. Everything from now on is up to you."

[03:09:26] (144) Ryshassa Krauser: Ryshassa's pale face is resolute, as she climbs the plank onto the Stormdriven. Her demeanor is of one who does not expect to return alive. And yet she goes willingly, without a trace of fear or sadness to her demeanor, nor even a glance back to the husband she leaves behind. Her duty is all that she is concerned with now.

As soon as she is on the ship, she makes her way below deck. She knows her place in this mission, and will not be seen nor heard -- if she can help it.

[03:10:08] (35) Orradi Filia: Filia follows Ryshassa below deck to make sure she is safe and to hide her own glowing mark.
[03:10:51] (197) Lancer: Lancer remains above, keeping a weather eye out for ambush.
[03:11:50] (198) Kess The Huntress: "Master, the Primordials were utterly defeated before, by us. they will know defeat again. I look forward to seeing you in the gardens of the Green Chase. May the Incarna bless and watch over you." She salutes him, as the vessel pushes off.
[03:14:01] (165) Redoubtable Magister: Picking up his belongings, the Magister boards silently. He also remains above deck - he suspects the others would not trust him so close to their charge anyways - and keeps his eyes peeled on the horizon. The one thing he could do would be to remain and watch for oncoming threats... And be on the front lines when it happens.
[03:16:07] (155) Silver Cloud: Seeing that everyone is aboard and ready to go Cloud grins broadly. "Alright everybody, let's go!" And right on cue his first mate starts shouting commands. While one of his Sailors kicks off the mooring lines and two others prepare the grand sail, Cloud stands beside his helmsman. "Take her out. Course northward and then into the Black Chase!"
