Alton Jao was the middle child of a working class family in a Side 1 colony, born in UC 72. His mother was killed in the WMD attacks unleashed by Zeon in the One Year War, and then when widowed dad eventually began trying to rekindle a relationship with an old flame over in Colony 30... ...Yes, that was the day the Titans unleashed poison gas. His older siblings did the working to support the family, which left him the parental home figure - and the strict hand, even with the support of neighbors in a closely knit community. The twins still resent him for it.

As a consequence, he could frankly care less for Zeon movements or the Federation. Alton first worked with the AEUG as technical support staff, and then with the Outer System Forces against neo-Zeon groups before graduating to a full pilot. This was prompted by the death of his girlfriend Gaia Firi, a mecha pilot in action against New Summer Project forces in late UC 91.

His association with the Outer System Forces is more of a local protective group in his mind. Both the EF and NZ have caused pointless destruction and fighting, and even if he is pro-spacenoid, he would rather see a neutral faction rather than align with one or the other.
