Background

Anto Scritti's family fell victim to a blackmailer, who took their money and revealed their secrets anyway. They were ruined - lost their estate, fortune and influence, and died penniless paupers. No funerary statues mark their passing, and other family statuary was lost, presumed destroyed. Anto's father's last useful act was to send the boy to study with a distant relative, not knowing that this relative was a sorcerer.

Anto learned much from his Aunt - much of it forbidden sorcery.

He knows - how to steal secrets out of your head, take memories you'd rather forget, or implant memories to turn your days into living nightmares, how to turn iron to rust and finest silk to rot and mould.

He knows - that the family funerary statues were destroyed because he is plagued by the spirits of the family dead - clamouring for attention, bickering, whining and sniping at each other incessantly.

He knows - how to take the secret of a merchant's hoard out of his head, give it to the thieves who wait patiently by his side, and erase the memory of them ever being there.

He knows - he is only working for the Thieves while he earns their help with his cunning scheme.

He knows (or can find out, for these are secrets, and secrets are not safe around him)- where the bodies are buried, where the gold is hidden, which gondola the strongbox is hidden in, what the combination is.

He knows - that he will be revenged on the blackmailer, and on the nobles who set them on his family.

He knows - that he will turn the city upside down; he has a plan. But he can wait.

But his head is full of secrets and memories that are not his. And sometimes he loses his sense of self among the detritus.

And his spirit sight is obscured/restricted to the cloud of ancestor spirits bickering and whining round him. He can usually tune this out, but sometimes when he's tired, or under stress it overwhelms him. Other times he can tap into their collective knowledge (academics), at the cost of giving attention to one spirit or another, amplifying their presence for a while, giving them space to complain or even just talk, and they will talk incessantly given the chance, and allowing them to dominate his thought, while all the others become more jealously bitter and vocal afterwards.

He works for the thieves while he waits them to help with his plan to plant his carefully forged documents, and while he plants the memories of those documents; revelations to turn the city upside down.

The walls of his decaying garret in the heart of the Tangle are embedded with many shiny but worthless objects, brought to him by the magpie that is often seen perched on his shoulder. The window of the garret is open in all weathers, the wall and floor below damp, mouldy and rotting. The floor, but oddly not the bed, table or chair (the only furniture), is caked in bird droppings
