Background

Fergus Brokksson was born in Hundelstone, a mountain pass village in the western Spine of the World, in the aftermath of the Thunder Blessing, when Moradin increased the birthrate of dwarves around the world. Growing up he was slow to talk, but quick to take to lessons in stonecrafting and the worship of the Moradinsamman, leading his parents to apprentice him to the local branch of the talhund (clerics of Dumathoin). He accompanied the talhund as they scouted for new deposits of precious gems and veins of ore. Eventually, to continue his training, he moved to Ironmaster, a dwarven city west of Ten Towns, and then, after Bruenor Battlehammer and allies retook Mithral Hall in the Spine, he traveled there to learn the secrets of rune magic and support the newly reclaimed fortress against kobolds, goblins, drow, giants and other traditional foes of the dwarves. He fought in the war against Obould Many-Arrows, when the orc king raised a massive army from the orc settlements around the Spine of the World and attacked. Eventually, in 1372 DR, a peace treaty was signed between Bruenor and Obould, ending the war, and Fergus began pondering his next path in life. His younger brother, Haemish, a soldier for Mithral Hall, had perished only weeks before the war ended in one of the last battles of the conflict, and Fergus decided to leave his homeland behind, afraid he'd never stop grieving as long as he remained.

He traveled south to the Sword Coast, stopping at cities such as Mirabar and Neverwinter, earning a living taking work guarding caravans and collecting bounties. Eventually he made his way to Waterdeep, the crown jewel of the Sword Coast, where after plying his trade as an adventurer for some months, he accepted an invitation to join the White Star Company.
