Finan was a wandering entertainer, and he'd returned to his home village, on the outskirts of everything, to visit his kin for a lovely celebration. (They were a good three days from the nearest other village, so they really did their best with what they had.) But after he left, he had the sheer luck to be unnoticed by the raiders. (Bandits, Goblins, whatever would fit here.) They were going to attack the village the next morning, and there was no time to send for help of any kind!
 
 
 
Finan had to do something, but what? What could he do? But he remembered a tale of old, where a bored devil would appear by a certain stone at midnight on a full moon. Where fools went seeking power or wealth, and suffered for it, but it was said that if you could face this devil, and not run, there was a way to bargain with it... and Finan had no choice.
 
 
 
It wasn't as simple as selling his soul. His soul never came into the bargain at all.
 
 
 
And when dawn broke, Finan was defending his home village with the powers of Hell.
 
 
 
He hasn't returned to his hometown since, and while he still smiles and laughs, there's a darkness in him now, beneath the smiles. Some say that he sold his soul, but that's not true. Sometimes a devil wants other things. Sometimes a devil wants entertainment, and entertainment of the darkest kind. And Finan now knows that there was enough darkness in his soul to provide it.
