There are magic-wielders far more potent than any mortal sorcerer: The Abstracts, more commonly referred to as "gods".

Whenever sentient life appears in any given sector of the universe, the abstract concepts it thinks of quickly take a shape of their own within the psychic plane. These concepts develop their own mind, becoming the very incarnation of certain ideas. Being as they are literally made of magic, the gods possess immense magical prowess.

The range of these effect is inferior to a light-year, however, so every inhabited solar system tends to have its own gods, separate from those of any other system. In fact, Earth's gods were unaware of the existence of alien lifeforms until [[Tagton]]'s arrival.

There are eight gods in mankind's world:

* Adeltom, god of heroism. Adeltom is the incarnation of courage, dedication, and selfless nobility. He tends to be protective of Twilian.

* Twilian, god of love. Twilian is the incarnation of all forms of affection, bet it romance, camaraderie, friendship, or maternal love. Twilian loves all beings, without exception.

* Kelpitan, god of civilization. Kelpitan is the incarnation of growth, development, and the creation of complex systems and societies. He generally considers Adeltom and Twilian to be allies.

* Xelevinus, god of order. Xelevinus is the incarnation of control, self-control, and unbending rules. Were it up to him, society would be completely static.

* Wirwil, god of chaos. Xelevinus's arch-nemesis, Wirwil is the incarnation of unending change. Were it up to him, anarchy would rule supreme.

* Paronak, god of fear. Paronak is the incarnation of terror, as well as the mastery over terror - both the ability to cause it and control it. He is generally seen as a foe by Adeltom.

* Astor, god of hate. Quite possibly the most evil being in the world, Astor hates everyone and everything with superhuman intensity - and more than anything else, he hates Twilian.

* Kotos, god of madness. Kotos has every form of insanity known to man, and can any of them on and off like a switch. In particular, he delights in megalomania, and has made it his goal to rule the world as a pantheon of one.

When magic was locked in Limbo, so were the gods themselves - for all their power, they could not act on the prime plane. Unlike everyone else in Limbo, though, they still retained the power to observe Earth. They did so for nearly a thousand years, until mutations began appearing. Fearing that the rising conflict between mutants and normal humans would bring ruin to the world, Adeltom decided to make an immense sacrifice in order to save the world: He would rebuild himself in a form different enough from magic to be ejected out of Limbo. Adeltom thus became [[The Avatar]], a mere shadow of his godly self - but able to act on Earth again. The Avatar's divine nature is what allows him to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

The return of magic at the end of WWII was seen as a disaster by the Avatar: Sooner or later, it means that the gods themselves will return in their full glory. With the god of heroism rendered powerless in comparison, evil gods such as Astor and Kotos will now have the advantage - and that may very well spell the doom of mankind. In order to prepare for the coming apocalypse, the Avatar has been organizing a secret cadre designed to find a solution; this [[Arcane Alliance]] numbers dozens of members, including the [[Global Champions]].


No god was ever killed on Earth: To strike them, one would need to find them in the psychic plane (with the obvious exception of Adeltom). Then, one would need to overcome their Power Level of 20. Even then, they would return to life within minutes, as the concepts they embody still exist in the human mind. This does not mean that killing gods is completely impossible, however (see [[Nihil]]); Kotos has his own plans to that effect, for the purpose of which he has created [[The Leviathan]].

Rather than act directly, the gods have, at times, created agents imbued with a fraction of their power (effectively, Power Level 14 entities imbued with cosmic power). Those demigods, while they have free will, are created with a mindset close to that of their patron god. Existing demigods are:

* [[The Fairy Godmother]], a demigod of Wirwil who delights in giving powers to random humans to "see what happens". She has developed a rivalry with [[Madman]] over the years - which other gods watch nervously, as even they fear the seemingly omnipotent mad scientist.

* [[The Bogeyman]], a demigod of Paronak. He seeks to plunge the world in terror; to that effect, he is likely to ally with [[Valerius]] once he comes out of Limbo (if he hasn't already).

* [[The Leviathan]] is a very unusual demigod - which is more or less to be expected, given that he serves Kotos. He is dormant for now, but when he awakens, he may bring an end to mankind and the pantheon alike...

* [[The Lady of the Lake]] is an avatar of Adeltom, and was involved with Avalon's History on occasions. She is eager to get out of Limbo to help the Avatar save the world and put an end to Nollius's evil.

* [[Goldsoul]] is an avatar of Twilian. He was among the first demigods to come out of Limbo...Which did him little good, as he was captured by Valerius. The vampire has been keeping him a captive for months, harvesting his power toward various applications that further his own goals. The demigod, in an attempt to break free, has contacted in her dreams the woman who would become [[Genesis]], directing her toward the magical artifact that gives her her powers, but Valerius put an end to it, and is now watching Genesis carefully...

* [[Upstart]], just as he claims, is a demigod from another world - an alien world that was devastated by [[The Berserkers]]. A demigod of order, he was ordered by his god to flee, which he did, helplessly, as he saw both the people of his world and his very patron god get devoured alive by the robotic swarm. The experience scarred him mentally (giving him a technology phobia from which he has not fully recovered), leading to him becoming a supervillain on Earth.


Plot seeds: 

* [[The Gift of Genesis]]: Valerius knows that Goldsoul has contacted Genesis, and is watching her closely. If other heroes discover something fishy, it may lead them to discover the imprisoned demigod...But Valerius may call upon other members of [[Global Might]] for help, particularly Upstart.

* [[Pantheon Crisis]]: The gods are starting to return. The heroes must face multiple apocalypses as different cosmic entities unleash their might upon Earth. Other individuals may have plans of their own, as the Arcane Alliance desperately tries to save the world, Valerius attempts to manipulate the cosmic balance to further his own interests, Kotos attempts to eliminate the rest of the pantheon, and Nollius offers the Global Champions a temporary alliance...

* [[The God-King of Avalon]]: Nollius intends to become a god himself. To that purpose, he has captured the Avatar, and intends to drain his power. The returning Lady of the Lake, armed with Excalibur, is willing to face any danger to save the Avatar - even if she needs to wake up King Arthur, whom Nollius has taken the precaution to place many curses on beforehand. The heroes may need to save the world's first superhero before they can save the world.
