Gordon Thornber was from a farming family who made their wealth through wool.  Before his time in the army, he was a journalist, hsi family intent on making him a man of words.  Mostly self-taught, he started on the local papers before moving to the Manchester Guardian.  He also started writing short horror novels, based on Yorkshire folklore.  During the war his family tried to buy him rank and a safe position.  He eschewed that and headed off for the eastern front, looking to emulate the famous Crimea reports.

Or, at least, the footprints of something.  After that he wrote one novel, which was derided as ridiculous, over the top and totally unlikely.  Since then he has returned to the Huddersfield beat, writing plain old society pieces and the occasion crime story.  He knew the good Doctor only a little, but both professionally and socially - while researching his last novel and after the family decided to celebrate New Years' Eve in Scotland for a change.
