Races

Available as PCs:

  • Man. Humans predominate, and they come in all sorts, whether Sird, Huth, Pashin, Potamanchu or one of the smaller groupings. Other humans are the Lorn (giants), Hathari (witches), Pygmies and Vister (orcs).
  • Lorn, Sons of Lorn, Half-Giants, Giants (humans). Although it is said that the First (True) Giants still live at the Edges of the World, giants to most people are represented by the Sons of Lorn, the closest descendants of the first men. The Sons of Lorn are almost exclusively male, and are usually called “Father” or “Brother” as a sign of respect. Use stats for giants.
  • Hathari, Daughters of Hatha, Brides of Sird, Witches (humans). The first spirits and the first wielders of magic. Although superficially resembling normal woman, Hathari can be told apart mostly by their elegance, bearing and speech and are usually addressed as “Mother” or “Sister”. Male Hathari are unknown. Use stats for elves.
  • Pygmies, Sprites (humans). Predominantly jungle-dwelling animists from the south, some have travelled into civilized lands to forge a new destiny. They are often taken for goblins by the ignorant and there is often much superstition surrounding their presence. Use stats for pech, but this will need a little tweaking (perhaps just regular humans with small size).
  • Vister, Westmen, Orcs, Darkmen (humans). From the far west, these men are greatly feared for the history of raids launched by their tribes into more civilized lands. A few have found a role in civilized lands, usually within mercenay companies, as guards for mines and the like. Use orc stats.

Other races available as PCs:

  • Goblins, Hobgoblins, Brownies. Wily creatures who had a marginal existence until the Empire recognized their potential. Although goblins are traditionally associated with the fringes of civilization – inhospitable mountain regions, deep forests or deserts – a sizeable number now live within the Empire. Depending on the region, goblins have usually adopted a few specific tasks. In some areas they are known as tinkers and as crafters, in others they are highly valued as shepherds or as night-guards; some military companies have goblins among their ranks too. They usually associate with others of their kind as they are often the target of resentment. Use goblin stats, but they will need to be tweaked for more craftiness than strength.
  • Drakes, Dragons, Firelizards. Drakes usually come from the far west, where they live a nomadic life, preying on large herd animals and on Western barbarians and Visters. Small numbers still live such a life within the confines of the Empire, but they have largely been hunted to extinction as trophies. More recently, the Empire has forged alliances with some of the principal drake lineages, so individuals or small groups are to be seen.
  • Saurians. To the south and east is the ancient and cultured empire….
  • Underfolk, Dwarves, Trolls, Goblins. Again, much superstition surrounds the Underfolk. In some places they are the stuff of bedtime stories and nightmares, in others they are trading partners to civilized folk. Underfolk are usually primitive creatures who remain below ground at all cost. Use dwarf stats.
