To be fair, the name's sort of my own fault. When Paradigm asked who I was, the first thing that came to mind was that scene from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - you know, the one where Jen beats up everyone in the teahouse? I got the name wrong (I blame David and that over-the-top RPG he always ran when we travelled to competitions) and I ended up all over the internet with people's phone cameras, so, well.

Dad's feelings about this are complicated, as he put it. He's concerned for my safety, because he's my dad, but he could tell I was getting tired of the wushu thing, that I wanted something more. I know he's proud I'm putting his training and style to good use, and while it's not public that he's my teacher, the fact that I practice JKD is, and it's been good for the gym. And he was the one who knew someone who knew someone who got me hooked up with the team.

Ugh, that. So, I don't do much solo stuff (Mom, the deal, etc etc) but a couple of weeks back I was doing some mobility training up on the rooftops and I stumbled on some masked assassin about to take a shot at someone with a bow. I intervened, we fought. I managed to knock the demon mask he was wearing off, he pulled off a disarm, and then while we were grappling the asshole went for a kiss. I don't know who the photographer was or how they managed to be in the right place at the right time, but yeah, that's why the shipping boards have me and the Blue Demon as a potential item. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go wash my mouth out again.

So far I've been lucky - nothing worse than what I'd be coming home with if I were doing serious MMA training. I took a doozy of a hit to the ribs a while back - I managed to roll with it so nothing cracked, but I was funny colors all down one side for weeks. It's part of why I went for swords when I started this - more range, less chance of concussion and stuff, y'know? But I've seriously got to get myself something with more protection.

Invincible Sword Princess![edit]

The Beacon[edit]

Amy Lee

A Player Character in Halcyon Knights.

Look[edit]

  • Asian woman
  • smiling face
  • comfortable clothing
  • gaudy costume

Amy Lee is a 16-year-old Chinese-American teenager, standing 5'3" in the right shoes. As the Invincible Sword Princess, she wears a bright-colored kung-fu outfit (a repurposed competitive wushu outfit) and a Chinese-opera-style mask painted in predominantly red and blue.

Abilities[edit]

Martial Arts, Swords: Before embarking on her superheroic career, Invincible Sword Princess! was involved in competitive wushu, and her father was a professional MMA fighter before pulling back to run their own gym. In addition, she has an impressive collection of swords of various styles - it's rare to see her bring the same sword out into action twice in a row.

Playbook Moves[edit]

Won't let you down
When you help a teammate, you can spend 2 out of the Team pool to add +2 to their roll.

Suck it, Domitian
When you stand strong while dramatically under fire, roll +Savior instead of +Danger to directly engage a threat.

Drives[edit]

Choose four drives to mark at the start of play. When you fulfill a marked drive, strike it out, and choose one: mark potential, clear a condition, take Influence over someone involved.
When your four marked drives are all struck out, choose and mark four new drives. When all drives are struck out, change playbooks, retire from the life, or become a paragon of the city.

  • lead the team successfully in battle
  • kiss someone dangerous
  • punch someone you probably shouldn’t
  • help a teammate when they most need you
  • take down a threat all on your own
  • outperform an adult hero
  • pull off a ridiculous stunt
  • save a teammate’s life
  • get drunk or high with a teammate
  • drive a fantastical vehicle
  • get a new costume
  • get a new hero name
  • earn the respect of a hero you admire
  • make out with a teammate
  • punch out a teammate
  • break up with someone
  • stop a fight with calm words
  • tell someone your true feelings for them
  • travel to an incredible place (or time)
  • reject someone who tells you “you shouldn’t be here”

Backstory[edit]

How did you gain your skills?
My dad's pretty big in the MMA scene (he's retired to coaching and teaching Jeet Kune Do now), so martial arts were always part of life growing up. He got me into wushu when I was little, I think to try and steer me away from the rougher stuff, but we always talked about the philosophy and stuff, which tended to lead into technique. Never hurt my standings in the wushu tournaments, either, at least till I stopped competing to do this!

When did you first put on your costume?
I'd just gotten my bag off the carousel on my way home from a national tournament when Paradigm made his villainous debut, taking the airport and everyone in it hostage. He had robots floating around that sensed guns and stuff, so security was even more useless than usual, y'know? But I'd noticed they mostly ignored people otherwise, so I ducked into a bathroom, changed into one of my fancy competition outfits and put on a mask I'd got as a souvenir. Turns out the robots' database had most of the local superheroes, but they didn't consider a 5'3" teenager that big a threat, and I had him on the ground with a bloody nose and a dislocated shoulder before he could do anything to fix that.

Who, outside your team, thinks you shouldn't be a superhero?
My mom is so not on board with this. It's why I haven't gotten a better costume yet, she says I have to find a way to get it myself.

Why do you try to be a hero?
Because it's amazing? Why go do another dance routine dressed up as a martial arts form when I can actually go out there and beat up bad guys and save the day?

Why do you care about the team?
Well, first off, because the team's part of the truce we worked out so my mom doesn't completely lose it. But besides that, these are kids like me! We're not going to just sit around, we're going to be heroes!

...also, they're all really hot, but don't tell them I said that, OK?

Relationships[edit]

  • Superstring is awesome, and I take every chance to hang out with him.
  • I've got to prove myself to Sound before I feel like a real hero.

Additional Information[edit]

Oh you poor sweet baby, how did you get stuck with that name? I can't blame you for wanting a new one... (Also, like, is the exclamation point included? I'm going to assume yes unless told otherwise)

Mom doesn't approve of your heroing shenanigans, but how did your dad react to your decision to put your skills to a more practical use?
Dad's feelings about this are complicated, as he put it. He's concerned for my safety, because he's my dad, but he could tell I was getting tired of the wushu thing, that I wanted something more. I know he's proud I'm putting his training and style to good use, and while it's not public that he's my teacher, the fact that I practice JKD is, and it's been good for the gym. And he was the one who knew someone who knew someone who got me hooked up with the team.

In the end, he wants me to be happy, and he can tell I'm loving this.

So, like, those gossip blogs are 90% hogwash obviously, but word is you've been a been going a bit soft on a certain costumed teenager ne'er-do-well lately. Who are folks shipping you with and where was that photo that's making the rounds taken?

What's the worst injury you've received on the job so far?
So far I've been lucky - nothing worse than what I'd be coming home with if I were doing serious MMA training. I took a doozy of a hit to the ribs a while back - I managed to roll with it so nothing cracked, but I was funny colors all down one side for weeks. It's part of why I went for swords when I started this - more range, less chance of concussion and stuff, y'know? But I've seriously got to get myself something with more protection.
