Ryouko Nakano, a girl in her class. Nakano-kun is boyish, tough, loudmouthed, brash, impulsive, and chivalrous with an easy lopsided smile and an infectious laugh. She's a middling student, and occasional member of the soccer team, though she usually only shows up for practice before a game.

Ume Doi, another girl in her class. Doi-san is beautiful, already being scouted as a model. She keeps to herself, except for a couple of girls she allows to be her sycophants. She doesn't bully others, but she turns a blind eye to incidents of bullying, when she could easily intervene.

Ren Aoyagi, another second-year student. Very sweet and feminine-looking (though he maintains that he is indeed a guy) which absolutely enchants Haruka. She kind of wants to go out with him, but hasn't worked up the courage to ask yet.

Kiyomi Kujou, the student-council vice-president. Almost every time one of Haruka's ideas for a school festival gets shot down, she's at least partly responsible. Haruka thinks she just needs to let go of herself and actually learn how to have fun.

Erik Holden, an exchange student from the United States. He's joined the karate club and is as good there as she is at kung fu(and unlike Ayane, is a good student. It annoys her that this American is doing better at tests in her native language than she is). Their relationship started off just competitive with each trying to show the other up but it's gotten increasingly acrimonious over the last few months.

Manami Suzuki, second year. Manami caught him buying shoujo manga in the bookstore earlier in the year. While he protested that it was just for his little sisters, she's been known to talk about it and suggest it was for him... which it was.

Shimabukuro Maasa, former class rep. She was the one who helped Chiharu get used to the new school, and she's still one of the classmates Chiharu's on the best terms with. Occasional recipient of Chiharu's near-famous boxed lunches.

Yada Hideyoshi, senior. Member of the soccer team, and all-around tough guy. He probably would've escaped Chiharu's notice, if she hadn't been volunteering at a shelter the day he brought a rather sickly housecat in. She strongly suspects that he neglected it, and that's one of the few ways to draw her ire. ... he, of course, barely knows she exists, so it's not much of a rivalry so far.

History

Hamano Highschool was originally founded more than a hundred years ago when Tarumi was a countryside fishing town. Partially destroyed in WW2 (not by the bombs themselves but by the resulting ensuing fire-storm) the school was reopened in 1947 and survived another 50 years until being heavily damaged in the great earthquake of 1995. There was some controversy at the time over whether the building had been up to code but nonetheless it was rebuilt yet again and reopened in 1996. The buildings are all quite modern on the surface but elements of the previous schools bleed through in unexpected places. The original school shrine from the 19th century (or possibly earlier) still remains untouched by the disasters that destroyed the previous buildings.

Faculty

Miyako Kawaguchi, Principal: The stereotypical Principal is a dodering old man who sips tea in his office while leaving his hard working Vice Principal to do all the administration. This was true in Hamano High until recently when the former Principal retired leaving Mrs. Kawaguchi the former VP to run the school. She tries to be still pretty hands with the day to day running of the school and this has caused friction with the faculty.

Vice Principal:

Homeroom Teacher 2-C:

Yukari Tamura, the Japanese Literature teacher. Tamura-sensei is fairly new as a teacher, being only 24 years old, but she has a sweet disposition and easily conveys her love for literature when she teaches. She's unmarried, or at least never talks about her husband if she has one.

Junichiro Nagata, math teacher. Mostly a very dry personality, but likes to make jokes that most of the class doesn't find funny. Needless to say, Haruka is extremely bored in his class, and tends to goof off during it more often than not.

Nyamo Tadakichi, PE teacher. She's something of a jerk but luckily is fairly lazy so as long as you don't earn her ire she really doesn't care what you do during PE.

Kaori Saito, science teacher. Ms. Saito has been vocal about her high aspirations for Daichi. While he enjoys the praise, her expectations also fill him with dread as he works harder to try to meet them.

Tanaka Tatsuko, art teacher. She's invested enough in Chiharu's artistic skills to give her the occasional afterschool lesson, and is pretty much the only teacher who's had the patience to ease their way past Chiharu's shell.
