Distinctions d8[edit]

Quiet Firecracker - A single ember in the right kindling can spark a forest fire. While she can make grand, showy displays of Evocation, she prefers to use just what is needed, where it's needed. Going big can get messy... very messy.

People Pleaser - Illyria needs to be liked and included, like the flint needs iron. Her efforts to be personable to everyone often lead to her being a shallow member of many circles, letting her sometimes be successful as a mediator, or getting her torn in all directions when that fails. The natural position she floats to in clubs is minion-to-the-leader, be that an actual vice-chair or something more subtle like the parliamentarian.

The Hungering Flames - It came after the flood, when the lingering damp threatened to strangle the village. Young Illyria didn't know the signs then, didn't recognize how the girl's fingers curled backwards or the ashen emptiness of her grey eyes. It promised her she could dry the firewood, make it burn. It was so hungry. All she had to do was keep feeding it. The vines didn't feed it, though. There was too much to burn, and so little actual fuel in them. So something else had to be eaten. And Illyria hadn't had any experience with controlling the appetite...

Step up 1 stress track to activate a strange magic for the scene.

Backstory/Bio[edit]

Background[edit]

Fire. A living, breathing thing. Feed it and it grows. Smother it and it suffocates. And it so desperately longs to run free. Illyria knows this. She's always known it, for as long as she's known anything. Even as an infant she would stare into the hearth-fire as it burned down to embers. As a little girl, she could draw a spark from flint and iron with the lightest touch. As a teen, she didn't need them.

It wasn't bad, being the village's creepy fire girl. When wicked agents of Summer called the rains upriver in a vain attempt to drown Shevyn's great city, the river had still risen enough to flood her village, and only she could call flame from the soaked firewood and save the village hearths, and for a time she was celebrated, piled with gifts of gratitude.

But alas, it didn't last. When half the village burned, blame obviously turned to her. Which wasn't entirely unfair; she had, in fact, caused the fire.

It wasn't that she'd wanted to hurt anyone, or just called forth the fire to watch the flames. That wasn't the point. That was never the point. Fire brings warmth and cooked food, and drives away the wild beasts. That's what she'd tried to do, as she saw the vines starting to creep up the walls of the cottages with unnatural speed. She called forth fire to burn them back, before the vines choked and strangled and released their poisons. But wet, vibrant greenery is poor food for fire, and she lost control as its overwhelming hunger flared.

And so the village was saved, but not if you ask them about it.

Perhaps here, she'll be able to learn more control... or, at least, be prepared to go where runaway fire will only burn out the Fey.

Personality[edit]

Most of the time Illyria is quiet and withdrawn. She's used to only being addressed when people need something from her and not feeling comfortable just piping up, so she watches people closely for signs that she's needed or unwanted. Sometimes, when she speaks softly, she's happy to let people think her suggested course of action was their own idea. But she flares up into a bonfire of chatty, clingy friendliness when fed a few crumbs of attention, or put into position to act... or mildly startled.

Magic[edit]

She obviously favors fire, and works most naturally with Initiating and Reacting. Fire usually maintains itself, after all, based on the fuel available to it, and the flames don't want to be smothered. They really don't want to be smothered...
