Family History

Gorthyn, Hywel's Grandfather

410: Grandfather born. Britons told to "look to your own defenses." Constantin chosen king. Great-grandfather chosen as an eques by the King. Also in this year, the Goth Alaric sacks Rome.

"The City which had taken the whole world was itself taken." ---Saint Jerome

431: Grandfather knighted by the Count of Salisbury. Some time shortly before this, Great-grandfather died. Great-grandfather had 2100 Glory. Grandfather, when knighted, had [210 (inherited) + 1000 knighted + 8= 1218] Glory.

439: Grandfather fought at the battle of Carlion. He survived, gaining 30 Glory. 1248 Glory.

Anyhow, Grandfather had a couple years of uneventful garrison duty, and a couple years of eventful garrison duty. In one priod of garrison duty he was singled out for good performance (444-445, during the Great Pictish Invasion). In another year he came very close to having to roll on the natural/miscellaneous causes of death table, but avoided having to roll by two points---I guess we could call that a close brush with illness, or passing within a few miles of a village where a great sickness was running wild.

Year 446 was Grandfather's crowing glory so far. This is the year in which the British and Vortigern's Saxon allies teamed up to crush the Picts at the Battle of Lincoln (Latin Lindum, British Lindon). Your grandfather got 300+ Glory out of that one battle alone. He had to roll on Passion Table 443 as a result of this battle, but ended up not getting the Hate (Picts) Passion. My interpretation of this is that while he saw some intense fighting, he wasn't too traumatized or upset about it all, likely because this battle earned him a hell of a lot of renown. Basically, getting that much Glory out of one battle means that Grandfather either slew numerous Picts or did something else noteworthy like save the life of an important noble.

I had rolled out through 447-449 (those years are one entry on the table), and Grandfather's glory was somewhere in the high 1600s. I'm going to call it 1680, as I can't remember exactly what it was. I'm probably rounding up a couple points in your favor. Hope that's okay.

I'll continue rolling out his history starting with Year 450 (which I hadn't rolled when my computer crashed) this evening. So far Grandfather seems to be off to an excellent start---doing very well against Picts, whether in garrison duty or pitched battle.

Year 450: King Vortigern marries Rowena, daughter of the Saxon Hengest. Grandfather attends the wedding, and gains 5 Glory for seeing & being seen at this momentous event.

Years 451-453 (One Entry): Your grandfather survives these years, but gains no Glory; there is little fighting during this time. News from Italy arrives: Attila the Hun came within striking distance of Rome but turned back!

During this time, many Britons of worth petition King Vortigern, complaining to him that he favors the Saxons overmuch. They are displeased with the amount of land given to the Saxons, and many are also unhappy that a British High King is now the son-in-law of a Saxon king.

Gorthyn is one of those who complains. He got all that glory at the Battle of Lincoln, and the Saxons get favored? He'll have none of that.

Year 454: The Huns leave Italy and make their way into Gaul. Aëtius, dux et patricius, sends out the call for help. Vortigern seeks to be rid of some complaining British nobles, and thus sends them to Gaul to assist Aëtius. Your grandfather is one of the British knights sent to Gaul in this manner.

Your grandfather survived the Battle of Chalons and saw Attila's Huns defeated. He gained 90 Glory in this battle. 1685 + 90 = 1775 Glory. Voritgern welcomes Grandfather back "with honeyed words, but a bitter heart (KAP 5.0 47)."

Years 445-446: The Vandals sack Rome in June 455, led by Gaiseric. Grandfather experiences nothing of great personal significance during this time.

Year 457: The eastern Britons revolt against Vortigern. Vorigern defeated the rebels at the Battle of Kent. Your grandfather fought for Vortigern at this battle. Likely he fought because he followed his liege lord (of Salisbury) out of a sense of duty and honor; Grandfather does not sound like a pro-Vortigern Briton at all.

Grandfather gained 180 Glory in this Battle. 1995 Glory overall.

Years 458-459: The lands of the Kantii are given over to the Saxon following the Battle of Kent. In this year (and the last), many Britons flee over the Channel into Armorica. Grandfather: Garrison duty. Little of interest. No Glory.

460: Father begins his career as a knight. He starts out his career with 1200 Glory (1000 + 10% of Grandfather's Glory at the time Father was knighted, all rounded up to nearest whole #). Father and Grandfather both serve garrison duty. Little or no combat, no Glory.

461: No Entry.

462: Voritgern's eldest son (from first marriage) chosen to lead a revolt against Vortigern. Salisbury's Count is among the rebels. The rebels are defeated at the Battle of Cambridge. Father and Grandfather both serve garrison duty; no Glory.

463: Vortigern calls for a peace council at Stonehenge. Grandfather attends on the side of the rebels, since Salisbury rebelled. Grandfather is treacherously murdered by Saxons during the infamous Night of the Long Knives [no matter what you roll for this entry, that's the result]. Your family now gains Hate (Saxons) 12.

Grandfather's History is over. His final Glory was 1995.

Geriant, Hywel's father

464: Your father, like many others in Salisbury, marries a widow this year. There are now many women in Salisbury without husbands following the disastrous Night of the Long Knives. This widow whom your Father marries is your Mother, unless you elect to take additional experience, in which case you will be your father's eldest legitimate son & born of a previous marriage [due to the fact that taking additional experience will mean you're born before this marriage takes place].

Father gained 50 Glory from this marriage. Ended year at 1250 Glory.

465: Vortigern's Saxons ravage the land. Merlin's fame beings to spread. Father hunkers down in Salisbury. More Britons flee to Brittany.

466-467: Aurelius and Uther return from across the Channel. Your Father fights on the side of Aurelius at the Siege of Carlion. He survived the siege, earning 180 Glory. Many Britons who were among Vortigern's party now go over to Aurelius.

468: Vortigern dies at Battle of Mt. Snowdon. Aurelius named High King, assumes title of Pendragon.

Father fights at Battle of Snowdon, earns 60 Glory. Ends year at 1490 Glory.

469-472: The Saxons, the Picts, and the Scoti (Irish) all raid Britain. Aurelius manages through diplomatic channels to avoid out-and-out war, but there is plenty of action to be seen countering small, independent bands of raiders. Uther earns much Glory during these fighting the raiders. Your father emulates Uther, and earns 200 Glory during this four-year stretch. 1690 Glory overall.

473: Saxons break the peace, defeat Aurelius in Thames Valley at Battle of Windsor. Father died of unknown causes during this year; his body was never found for proper burial. He died with a Glory total of 1690.

...

485: Hywel will start the game with 169 Glory (inherited from Father) + 1000 Glory upon being knighted.
