Jonall was born in the town of Boldhome, the son of a merchant. Growing up he always seemed to be uncannily lucky and this allied with his intelligence has made him confident and egotistical. He apprenticed to the free sages at 16 and was enlisted into the militia to protect the town. Always seeking new knowledge led him to join the cult of Lankhor Mhy. However his confidence has led him astray and after insulting the commander of the town watch he has found it sensible to leave Boldhome on a caravan to Pavis. He is wary of fellow Sartarites due to his fears of retaliation from his enemies in Boldhome and he seeks status to protect him and earn forgiveness for his acts in Boldhome.

Jonall's family is from the Culbrea tribe and moved into Boldhome for the trading opportunities it gave them as Issaries merchants. His father Heortmast Greenmile is a thane and Issaries Acolyte. Their home is in the West Pocket area of Boldhome and though they trade with the Lunars secretly they strive to undermine their rule.
 
 
 
Jonall's feud with the Kitori Thane Saronil Tarkulfson arose when Saronil accused him of delaying the group of fyrd he was serving with from catching a raiding party of Broo due to seeking to examine strange rocks that had fallen from the sky. Jonall took this as an accusation of cowardice from the Uroxi warrior, but was restrained from fighting with Saronil by the Grey Sages who saw no worth in creating a split amongst the Orlanthi people in their bondage under the Lunars. Soon after this Jonall started his travels that led him to being on the way to Pavis when our story began
 
 
 
Traveling to Pavis he has fallen in with the guards of an Ernaldan Priestess on a quest to the Paps and finds himself becoming an Acolyte of Lankhor Mhy for his services to the temple at Pavis.
