MY NAME IS . . . Josiah Blackwell
AND I AM . . . a military surgeon in the Union Army.
WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING YOU AWAKE? The sound of artillery and the moaning of the wounded. Lee's army is less than a mile from Washington.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO YOU? One of the black regiments broke badly during the attack, and I spent the evening removing shattered limbs from their men. One pulled free from the restraints while I was working and somehow ran away on his poor naked stumps, and I chased him down and bludgeoned him with my bonesaw. If only my professor could see me now.
WHAT'S ON THE SURFACE? Josiah is the model of a Virginian gentleman, though the strain of the war and being on the opposite site from his home and family has worn him thin.
WHAT LIES BENEATH? Black cynicism and hatred of the politicians on both sides of this godforsaken war, the generals on both sides, the slaves and slaveholders alike.
WHAT IS YOUR PATH? Josiah is worried about his brother in the Army of Northern Virginia and his sister on the family land back home, and just wants to see them safe.
