It is important to distinguish the Super-Gadgeteer from the skilled engineer.  An engineer is a highly skilled worker, able to develop new, realistic systems, hone technology in new directions, and so on, but the Super-Gadgeteer creates entire new technologies, although they often don't hone them, instead moving on to an entirely new field.
