After brave service as a Hoplite, Lysis of Phyle was promoted to Captain of the Promarian Palace Guard, an excellent position from which to launch a career as a Strategos. Unfortunately for Lysis the wife of the Archon's eldest son fell in love with him. Claiming that, even though he was a bastard, honour demanded Flavius be attended and guarded on his journey the eldest son, Nikeratos, convinced his father to send Lysis as a bodyguard for Flavius.

Hoping to kill two troublesome birds with one stone, Nikeratos also instructed Lysis to fail at his job and make sure Flavius never returned to Promares. However, Lysis is no murderer and could guess what reward Nikeratos had in store for him if he did kill his bastard brother. So he sought out the Oracle of Phyle for advice. She revealed to him that one day the scholarly Flavius shall rise to be the beloved Tyrant of Promares and Lysis is determined that when the Tyrant needs a trusted Strategos he'll be there to fill the role and hopefully take revenge on Nikeratos at the same time.
