She believed that if she conceived a child at precisely the correct time and place of the new Millennium, her daughter would herself have a destiny as the greatest sorceress the world has ever known. She spent years and a considerable portion of her inheritance on determining that time and place, and particularly the identity of the father - about whom nothing is known to this day beyond his being of Japanese descent, but apparently living somewhere outside Japan.

Something must have been considerably off in the prophecy. Cora died in childbirth (which it turns out she actually anticipated as a strong possibility based on the existence of an extensive set of letters she wrote to her unborn daughter). Furthermore, her daughter was decidedly non-magical - the opposite, if anything. But she grew to be something of a superwoman (though not literally superhuman) - extremely tall, strong, and athletic.

The daughter was named Athena, per her mother's wishes, but was not acknowledged by the family. Athena was adopted by the Horace Conquest, the servant who ran the Macpherson family home and estate. Her grandfather thought of himself as more than fair given the circumstances, ensuring that she went to the best schools and that she had a considerable trust fund (albeit a tiny fraction of what her inheritance would be), but he simply could not and would not formally acknowledge a half-Asian girl born out of wedlock.

Athena wound up fibbing about her age and volunteering with Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps as a mechanic, though once in Europe she found herself recruited by British Intelligence into a highly irregular "counter-magic" organization that saw considerable action, often horrific action.

After the war, Athena tried to forget these experiences by losing herself in hedonism - almost literally, as it happened, when she got drunk in a San Francisco bar, then found herself waking up in Shanghai, in bed with the British consul's wife, having no memory whatsoever of how she got there or what she did in the days between. Though she made a point of avoiding this sort of epic blackout in the future, she also found southeast Asia to be a good place to avoid boredom. Still aimless, she found herself wandering into the life of a soldier of fortune and full-time adventuress. Unlike most in her profession, she actually made a fortune for herself. After the "Adventure of the Jade Dragon of Pulau Pulau," she unfortunately had to return said dragon to the colonial governor. Fortunately, the Negotiable Gold Coins of the Jade Dragon of Pulau Pulau more than made up for that.

After growing up among considerable wealth and feeling indifferent to it, Athena found to her surprise that she enjoyed being wealthy, maybe because it was her self-made fortune. She started paying attention to her own appearance and making herself feel equally at home in high society and the sleaziest dives of low society.

Athena spent the 1920s still trying to "lose herself" in various ways, but adventure kept finding her, giving her many colorful stories to tell and several interesting titles (both perhaps slightly exaggerated) such as "Pirate Queen of Mindanao." At one point, she nearly lost an eye in a boarding action in the Straits of Malacca. The wound eventually healed remarkably well, leaving only a scar that somehow made her look more attractively dangerous rather than disfigured. When not directly engaged in dangerous activities, she wears carefully color-coordinated eyepatches, supposedly to rest her eye, but in truth because it's a great look. (And her eyepatches are made with thin fabrics that are deceptively easy to see through.)

Despite the stories, Athena stayed mostly on the side of law and order, with occasional forays into illicit activity. Since returning to North America, she has engaged in a bit of bootlegging, but more to avoid boredom and ensure that her favorite speakeasies are well-stocked.

Physical Appearance: She's strikingly beautiful, and at 6'5", simply striking in the general sense. She naturally turns heads whenever she walks into a room, and over the years she's grown to accept and roll with that. Her features are more "Western" than "Asian," at least at first glance, but her exotic looks definitely look "not entirely white" to people who care about that kind of thing. One "trick of the trade" Athena has picked up is using makeup and disguise to make herself read as "pure" Western or Asian.

She returned to North America about a year ago. Working as a monster hunter, she certainly doesn't need the money, but it keeps her from getting bored, or so she tells people. Her real motives are more complex. She never burned her mother's letters, as her grandfather once recommended, and has started to wonder exactly why she's so different from most people, and not just in terms of her physique. Why can't she settle down into one place, one relationship, etc., like a normal person? It seems clear after a decade of trying that she can't outrun her destiny, so she might as well try to understand it.
