Combat Rolls

When rolling to see if a combat action is successful, there is an attacking character and a defending character. Use the attacking character attack modifier plus his dice roll to see if he can get a higher total than his target's defense modifier. If the attacking character's total (of his attack bonus and die roll) is higher than his target's defense modifier, the combat action is successful, otherwise the combat action fails.

There are 3 kinds of attack and defense modifiers: missile, striking, and grappling. Grappling attack and defense modifiers are only used for grappling actions, missile attack and missile defense are only used for missile weapon actions, and striking attacks and striking defense are used for normal hand-to-hand attacks and defenses (with and without weapons.) The attack number listed by a weapon on a character sheet is for a missile attack if the weapon is a projectile weapon, or if it is a hand to hand weapon, that attack modifier is for a striking attack A hand to hand weapon might also have a missile attack modifier which is used when the weapon is thrown. The defense modifier listed in the equipment section is always for a striking defense. Missile and grappling defense are listed toward the bottom of the character sheet, not in the equipment list.
