Moves[edit]
Punch everyone: Whenever you charge into a fight without hedging your bets, you can shift your Danger up and any other label down.
There when it matters: When you defend someone, on a hit you can hold 1 instead of choosing one from the list. Spend your hold when they are in danger later to arrive on the scene ready to help.
Held: 1 for Io.
The Bull’s Heart You always have exactly one love and one rival. You can change your love or rival at any time; give the new subject of your affections or disdain Influence over you. Take +1 ongoing to any action that impresses your love or frustrates your rival.
Defender: When you leap to defend your love or rival in battle, roll + Danger instead of + Savior to defend them.
Moment of Truth[edit]
This is what you do best. You let loose, all the pent up strength and rage and glee, and you break whatever stands in your way. You are a walking demolition crew. What can stand up to you? Nothing. Not buildings. Not structures. Not enemies. Nothing. Of course, now the people who changed you know exactly where to find you...
Team Moves[edit]
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, make them your love or rival immediately to mark potential. If they are already your love or rival, take Influence over them and mark potential.
When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, give them Influence and hold 2. Spend that hold to help them as if it were Team in the pool.
Potential[edit]
1/5
Advances[edit]
Backstory[edit]
Who changed you?
Colonel Edge has a vision he calls “Ultra Branch” - a new division of the US military dedicated to handling super-powered threats, and deploying super-powered soldiers to achieve military ends. Toward that end he began recruiting young people for experimental treatments developed by Dr. Rush. Some were outright failures: some died, many were left permanently disabled. But a few developed super-powers.
How did you escape from them?
It turns out that giving a bunch of young people powers and assuming they will somehow become a disciplined fighting force doesn’t work that well. Some just left, but a few took advantage of their powers to become villains. Maria decided she had to stop them. As a result, the whole program got exposed, and the ethical and legal problems meant Col. Edge was disgraced. But he and Dr. Rush are still out there.
Who, outside the team, tries to take care of you now?
My family: mom and dad and little sister Alejandra. And BFF Dee is thrilled I’m back from “the service.”
Why do you try to be a hero?
They think Latina means dumb.
They think girl means weak.
They think quiet means compliant.
I’m going to prove them wrong.
Why do you care about the team?
They seem like they want to use their powers to do something right.
When Our Team First Came Together[edit]
When we first came together, we defeated a dangerous enemy:
We fought a weird extradimensional (?) alien (?) called Kromatik. It bled colors wherever it moved, and seemed to disrupt local reality, putting many civilians in danger.
Relationships[edit]
- Io is your love. You’ve opened up to them about the worst parts of your past.
- Maria probably isn't even sure whether it is romantic or something else, and she certainly wouldn't have said anything. But they've opened up to each other and anyone paying attention will notice that La Rabia's protective focus centers on Io.
- Preston Digits is your rival. They tried to control you at a crucial moment.
Influence[edit]
I have influence over Fennec Fox, Gravitas and Preston Digits
Io and Preston Digits have influence over me
GM Questions[edit]
Does Maria know/keep in touch with any of the other survivors?
The non-supervillain survivors have some kind of group chat or something. Maria's not deeply connected there, but she feels obligated to stay aware. And they all have a trauma bond.
Is Colonel Edge still out there and up to stuff?
Oh, absolutely. He still wants to achieve Ultra Branch, and he still thinks the experimentation survivors owe him loyalty or service or something.
And Dr. Rush is out there, and is obviously a supervillain of some stripe - either an already-known villain under an assumed name, or a villain just getting started.
What does your costume look like?
Hot pink, green, and white geometric design on a bodysuit, very memorable
What message is it trying to send?
Look at me! (not anyone else you might be intending to hurt)
What is your home life like?
Mom and Dad intend well, but they're running small business owners don't have much time. It's loud and loving and frantic.
Outside of school and home, where are you most likely to be found when not in hero mode?
Skate park. She rarely skates anymore - with her abilities, it's too easy - but she enjoys hanging out.
Would you choose to spend time with your teammates outside of Team-related activities?
Sure, if they're cool about it. But sometimes she needs her introvert time.
Which Hero, other than your mentor, do you look up to?
Provocateur, who many see as the most "underpowered" Exemplar, but Maria thinks of her as the one who was there through their most challenging time and kept finding a way to contribute, to help, to win through.
Which Villain do you dread encountering the most?
Conundrum, who creates elaborate puzzle-traps to humiliate heroes and thinks nothing of threatening - and even killing - civilians to get heroes to pay attention. Maria knows he's smarter than she is, so he could well humiliate her too, which is a concern. But mostly she's afraid that if she ever got her hands on him, she'd just kill him.
