History

Matt Cole grew up in one of Gotham's slums and was always in trouble, mainly for theft and burglary. He used his natural agility and small size to pay the bills for him and his invalid mother. (Not that he didn’t enjoy the thrill too: he was fascinated by the growing legend of ‘the Cat-Woman’ and flattered himself he could be like her.) As he got older, his reputation grew and he started taking contracts, justifying it by telling himself he was the non-violent option for jobs that were going to get done anyway.

Everything was going well enough until one job, stealing an artefact from an old collector on behalf of the Riddler. It should have been easy, but something went wrong. Matt had his hands on the item when the house exploded. He didn’t know how he managed to get out unscathed, but he did. He stumbled home and picked up his life again the next day, soon noticing, however, that he his skills had improved massively: he was quicker, stronger, more agile and flexible. He could blend into a crowd and didn't leave traces. Even alarm systems didn’t pick him up any more. He decided to go independent, and the press gave him the nickname ‘The Ghost’, because of his ability to get in anywhere. His independent career was short, however, because he was quickly caught by the Batman and given an ultimatum: join up and pay back, or be turned in.

Personality

Thrillseeking and short-sighted. Cole’s under the mistaken impression that so long as he doesn’t do anything evil personally, then he’s not done anything wrong.

Abilities & Resources

Matt is, unbeknownst to everyone including himself, dead. He was fated to die in that explosion, but holding the artefact when he was killed instead put him out of synch with this universe. He can ‘cheat’ its laws to a limited extent, which means, for him, being better at what he used to do, as well as new abilities to be forgotten/not noticed. This is also why a run-in with magical heroes like Dr Fate or the Phantom Stranger is likely to be a problem. Matt may have as-yet undiscovered abilities, but because he doesn't know what's happened, he doesn't think outside the box of what he normally does and so has only discovered powers that directly relate to what he was already used to doing.
