Over the fox's fifth and last tail the demons fell to fighting, for with the four strongest gone there was no one of them left strong enough to claim the tail above all others. Then the tailless Kitsune spoke from the pool of blood where she lay, and the Yokai, unused to sweet and clever words, foolishly listened and agreed that the tail belonged to the one of them that was most vicious and vile. Tasks would be set to them and the Kitsune, who knew their evil best and hated all equally, would judge between them. Then the fox's sorcery took them, for though stripped of all powers by the cutting of her tails, she was still sharp of wit and wise of the gods, and trapped her tormenters unknowingly into oaths of servitude too horrible for even a demon to contemplate breaking. |
