The tale of Natsuko is known to all in the Saikai, though none will admit to being the first to tell it. Whispers tell that under the silks and cloth of the witch Natsuko is not a woman but an untailed fox. A kitsune of Inari ambushed on a cold winter's night by a powerful and blasphemous band of Yokai foolishly unafraid of the Rice God. By vile tortures and depraved acts, the kitsune was broken and four of it's tails removed, taken by the strongest demons as trophies to display their power. Over the fox's fifth and last tail the demons fell to fighting, for with the four strongest gone there was none left strong enough to claim the tail above all others. Then the tailless Kitsune spoke from the pool of blood where she lay, and the Yokai, unused to sweet and clever words, foolishly listened and agreed that the tail belonged to the one of them that was most vicious and vile. Tasks would be set to them and the Kitsune, who knew their evil best and hated all equally, would judge between them. Then the fox's sorcery took them, for though stripped of all powers by the cutting of her tails, she was still sharp of wit and wise of the gods, and trapped her tormenters unknowingly into oaths of servitude too horrible for even a demon to contemplate breaking.

Now the demons follow the fox trapped in woman's form by the loss of her tails, bound to her service by the severed tail she wraps around her waist. The task she has set them is to serve her until all five tails stand once more in her hands, but the Yokai who took the other four have vanished, fled in fear of Inari's revenge for their desecration.

Natsuko (Summer Child) appeared at Saikai on the arm of Master Koji, a beautiful woman in nothing but a shift and shoes of rags, and there was many a person who joked at the blood that dripped between her legs onto white snow under her. Jokes soon ceased when the first of her "debtors", as she calls them, appeared that night on wide wings, returning from some task upon the mountain. Since then she has served the Black Tigers in all ways, putting the demons she commands at their service for tasks large and small.
