| − | The year is approximately 1400AD. Japan is in a state of civil war as dozens of clans are battling it out, each trying to assert themselves and gain control of the country. The most powerful clans seem to change on a daily basis as none of them are able to expand their reach and hold their new territory for long before another clan comes along and takes it away from them. Both small skirmishes and full out battles with hundreds of warriors has become a common sight, as are assassinations.

| − | Along the west coast towards the southern end of the country is the city of Nagasaki, which has become one of the most contested cities between the clans. Approximately 20 miles to the north-west lies the tiny village of Saikai, which has managed to avoid much of the fighting over the years due to is isolated location on the coast and it's relative position of not being between any major cities. Living in relative isolation, the families are the remnants of the Black Tiger ninja clan, a clan that was thought to have been eliminated many years previously by other clans.

| − | The clan was almost completely wiped out twenty years ago in another part of Japan when a major battle broke out. Only a handful of Black Tigers escaped and fled to Saikai to rebuild their fallen clan. Master Koji, supreme leader of the Black Tigers has been gathering resources in the form of warriors, money, and valuable items for two decades relatively uncontested as the rest of the countries battles with itself. He is the only remaining member of the original Black Tiger clan, and has vowed to take a different tactic than the other clans. While the Black Tigers are very small compared to other clans, they've been amassing a lot of wealth over the years and are now positioning themselves to covertly expanding their influence from the single fishing village to the whole of Japan.
