Henk had been just a kid when The Rising happened, and he had barely escaped with his life.  His parents, unfortunately, did not, buying him time to escape from a marauding ogre.  But he had survived and stumbled into other survivors from Kaybridge on their journey to the Blackspire Mountains. The journey had been long and hard, and some did not think an orphan with no skills was worth taking, but he was determined to survive.  And eventually he had impressed an old man named Ellic, who had been a cook at an inn before civilization had collapsed, with his persistence.  When the village was settled, Ellic took Henk on as a helper, teaching him how to cook.  And while Henk had learned that he liked to cook, what he learned he liked even more was learning.  From cooking, to hunting, to snares, to concocting potions to help others, to learning the basics of occultism and arcane knowledge, there was no new topic that Henk didn't love to throw himself in to.  So when the call came out for volunteers to leave the village to find more food and resources, Henk was practically the first to step forward.  Going back outside was dangerous, but it was also the chance to learn so much more, and who wouldn't leap at the chance for that, thought Henk.
