The Cat Tribe, Nekohara

Nekohara is a small tribe lives in a mountain village. Each member of the Nekohara tribe was born with feline features - cat ears, cattail, claws and smaller size. The tribal lore of Nekohara tells that they are descendents of a powerful, almost godlike Nekomata (Japanese cat spirit), Mirai, and was appointed by their mythical ancestor to guard something sacred inside the Nekohara Shinsha, a Shinto shrine at the center of the village. The Mikos (shrine maidens) of the Shinsha, with their spiritual senses, are the only ones who know what Nekohara is guarding. The Mikos also act as witchdoctors and divine leaders of the tribe. While other Nekohara have mixed-colored fur on their cat ears and tail, the Mikos have white ears and tail. And in each generation, only one girl will be born with black ears and tail, the “Kuro no Shojo” (The Black Maiden) who will become the high priestess of the Shisha, and thus the leader of the entire Nekohara tribe.

Nekohara Yumu is the Kuro no Shojo of her generation. As such, she was brought into the Nekohara Shinsha right after her birth. She lived in the Shinsha for her entire life, practicing Shinto Jutsu and developing her spiritual powers. Since the Shinsha is run by the Mikos, there’re no male in the Shinsha, and Yumu had never met a boy in her entire life, which cause her to panic whenever she is in close proximity with a boy.

Like other members of her tribe, Yumu has all the pros and cons of a cat. She is pretty nimble and agile, consider that she is nowhere near athletic. She can see in low-light environment, has superior hearing and retractable claws. She is easily distracted by things that distract cats, such as fat-moving objects, and has a great fear toward water, which is only comparable by her fear of boys.

Yumu is incredibly small for her age, barely more than 3 feet tall. She is well respected inside her tribe for her status (if the tribal people gets to meet her at all), but on the outside world she is often dismissed as a child, especially when she talks about things like “ninja” or “Nekomata”. She has long black hair and golden eyes, along with black cat ears and tail.

Nekomata

Each high priestess of Nekohara tribe is spiritually bound with a Nekomata, who acts as her advisor and companion. A Nekomata has all the attributes of a common house cat, but also possess human-level intellect (not necessarily a human mind set though). Whether the Nekomata is endurable or not depends on individual, but even if her Nekomata got killed, the priestess can resurrect her companion one day later, with a fairly simple ritual. The only way to permanently kill the Nekomata is to kill the priestess first.

Ninja Neko, Nyomu-chan!

“Evildoers beware! Nyomu-sama will punish you all…in the name of CATS!!!!! NYAAAA!!!!!!!!”

The Nekomata who was bounded with the shy and polite Yumu is, oddly enough, the one Nekomata who possess a ground-breakingly over-the-top personality that had never been seen in the Nekohara history. Nyomu, who Yumu nicknamed “Yumu-chan”, is the self-proclaimed Ninja Cat of Love and Justice, who deemed punish evil her divine duty, second only to the duty to guide and protect Yumu.
