Background

Gray was born into a rich, influential family. They had money, indeed money beyond their means to spend it. His life could have been one of hedonistic pleasure, but Gray walked away from it all on his 13th birthday, to go and see the world as it truly was, in his mind. His family had grown corrupt and decadent, and were wasting their fortunes on their own selfish pleasures instead of helping the poor and needy. Gray took no money or funds with him, but traveled by foot, hitch-hiking, and whatever means he could. He would stop at a place for a week, month, or longer, and work there until he became tired, then travel on to another place. Most of the time Gray worked for food and board, or for free if they couldn't pay him. The money he did take he gave away to those in need. He liked helping people, and cared little that he might die, cold and alone in a ditch. "It is the sum of a man's life that is what he is, not the last few guttering hours." At some point Gray hooked up with an expedition going to the Far East. Having finished a stint as a doctor-in-training, Gray was eager to go, and for their part they were happy to have a man for low pay and high risk. One of the men's names was Baker, a very likeable and charming fellow. The dig went along as usual, what with a lack of excitement and plenty of sand, but Gray didn't mind, knowing sooner or later something would happen, if not here, then somewhere else connected to here, in some form or fashion. Somewhere at the midway point of the dig, Baker suffered a dramatic personality shift. He became introverted and shy, acting at odds with his former self. Though it wasn't obvious until later, it was at that point the expedition started to fracture. One night after a hard day's work, Gray awoke to the sound of gunshots. While the others were trying to figure out what had happened, or had indeed figured out what had happened and were fleeing for their lives, Gray sought out Baker, the odd man out. There were several workers shot next to his tent, and he was nowhere to be seen. Gray "borrowed" Baker's notes among other possessions, and found out about a man named Lucius Thorp. Sadly, the information was lacking, and all he had was the address of Thorp's lawyer, but this was enough for Gray. He settled what little affairs he had there, and set out to find this Lucius Thorp.
