Roan Is a young Pol Joni Brave, named after the five Heron feathers that he wears in his hair (gained from a raid into the pass against the Heron clan of the Colymar).. Vain and outspoken, he lives for riding and raiding. Nothing matters more than killing nomads and stealing their herd beasts.

Slim and of average height Roan wears his fair hair tied back, with two long plaited side locks. Deeply tanned and tattooed he likes to think that he cuts a dashing and handsome figure; in reality he’s pretty average in the looks department. This doesn’t stop him from preening at every chance he gets.

He is an initiate of Ulanin the rider and a lay member of Finovan the Raider. Since joining the Pure Horse Spirit society as a follower, he has begun to develop a feel for the spirits of the Verge, though it is a whole new and unsettling world that has opened up for him.

Disdainful towards most people he holds a deep-rooted respect for the Storm bull members of the clan, especially his big brother Orlav Toothwind. He feels that their free and somewhat violent spirit mirrors his own views and he gets a kick from the bedlam that they create. But he is a true son of Ulanin; being at one with the horses he so loves. Roan awaits the day his own horse “Sacred Morning Thunder” will be awakened by his cult. Until that day he plans to acquire as many herd beasts as possible and kill as many nomads so that he can ask for the hand of Laughing Meadow, his childhood sweetheart.

He wears soft leather trews and dog skin chaps. A deerskin shirt, given to him by Laughing Meadow, covers the two jackrabbit paws hanging from a thong around his neck. Across his horse lies a stolen Blue Jay blanket topped by a longhorn sheepskin, doubling as a bedroll on cold nights. Crude saddlebags hold his meagre possessions. Spare clothes, eating utensils, tinderbox, trail food, (dried meat and tubers?), a waterskin. Runes of mobility, beast and raiding adorn his horse’s flanks, painted on last Holyday. His shield bears the emblem of a Stylised Horse and a death rune.

When fighting from horseback he puts his trust in a lance and Sable hide shield. For fighting on foot he relies on his Bison Jaw club and shield, or the long Bronze knife he got on his tribal initiation. Roan is already getting a name for his archery skill and he can be found galloping daily across the Verge, bow in hand firing at markers in the sand.

His young Pet Desert Prowler named ‘Stinka’ likes to sit between his legs when he rides.

He collects random feathers to fletch his arrows with, resulting in a many coloured range in his quiver. Owl feathered arrows will be used at night, Hawk feathers for long shots etc. It is his calling card in a way. If he could only get a winged bull feather!

Any spare wealth is tied up in a few amber stones on a piece of gut around one wrist, some coins and a few cows.

Notes

I'll rule that as a Pol Joni, you can have Lance and Shield in place of spear and shield. I'll assume that on the ground you can choke up on the shaft and use the weapons with the same stats as a regular 1H Spear and shield. Pol Joni also use slightly curved cavalry swords (but not curved enough to be confused with scimitars!) Javelins are popular with the Pol Joni as well, as are most skirmisher/scout weapons.
