Background and Notes[edit]

Robert Abdullah (born 1900), stockman and cameleer, was born about 1900 at Nundroo Station, between Ceduna and the West Australian border. His father was of Afghan descent, and came from the Hergott Springs (Marree) region of South Australia. His mother was a Pitjantjatjara woman from a group which had stayed behind when the majority of their people had been absorbed by their north-east neighbours, the Matutjara.

A competent horseman by the age of 10, he was taken by a station-owner to ride in bush meetings. He gained a reputation throughout Central Australia as a horse-breaker and broke remounts for the Indian Army. He was tall and wiry. In remote areas in the north of South Australia he worked at mustering, horse-breaking, yard-building and fencing on stations such as Todmorden, Mount Barry, Granite Downs, Wallatina and Everard Park. He drove supply-carrying teams of camels from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs, then travelled west into the Aboriginal reserve to trade food for dingo scalps—obtained by the Pitjantjatjara and Yankuntjatjara people—on which the government paid a bounty.

He joined the army after being heartbroken by an Arrente girl and was halfway to Europe before he wised up to himself...he distinguished himself in service both as a replacement medic and forward scout but got shipped home when he took a piece of shrapnel to the forehead.

Once back home he found himself with no prospects so went back to his old line of work for a time, but he was still troubled by his war experience and found himself in Sydney working odd jobs as a street cleaner and dock worker.
