Background

Ashenvale is a small, easily overlooked village in the vicinity of Dawnburry.

Far from being thriving and bristling with activity like its "big sister city", the town's main activities are both agrarian and forest-driven: the name "Ashenvale" invokes both the somber, fertile soils and the numerous ash trees constituting the surroundings of the village. Most youngsters raised here unwilling to commit to working the land find it natural to seek jobs as merchants, craftsmen or repairers in Dawnburry.

It is this environment that fostered young Royce Faber, a boy with a natural, uncanny ability to interact with matter: he could infuse objects with elements, and his mind had a natural knack for creative crafting.

Unfortunately, like Dawnburry, Ashenvale was part of the Empire, and its rule were clear: any young citizen with metaphysical potential was to be enrolled in the Imperial Army and put to good use. Royce's talents earned him a place among the Magisters, an elite corp of likepowered individuals; their role was to assist both the army as special disruptive units and the scientists as "experience field testers". While his contributionsmade him appreciated by the soldiers and the military hierarchy, earning him the grade of Captain, Royce grew more and more unnerved by the army's deeds and the scientists' researches, until he finally snapped: the "global metaphysics project", as they would euphemically call it, was just a terribly dangerous expression of their lust for power, and he was having none of it. After leaving the Army, the Emperor's murder left everything in disarray; Royce sees the situation as a unique opportunity to fight for change; maybe then, he will be at peace with his past.

Q&A

What is the price your character paid for insubordination?

Getting expelled from the Army and becoming Wanted.
Royce refused to keep on applying the work of twisted scientists & engineers; yet he knows what happened, what was done and to whom. Those informations are not something the remnants of the Empire want to be publicly well-known.

Which factions promised you their help? Which factions might oppose you?

The Army of the Land is quite different from other imperial military remnants: its motto was to give a home and a purpose to every lowborn commoner who enrolled, found some sense in being in the military, and could not accept serving the ambition of some greedy noble in the aftermath of the assassination.
Although he is persona non grata in the Army, Royce Faber was greatly beloved by his men, thanks to his will to protect them from both the enemy and the hierarchy; many, many of them enrolled in the Army of the Land, and they would undoubtly be of assistance if they met Royce again.

The Præsidium is an association of many high-profile representatives of the Empire: politics, generals, administrators, etc. Their worldview is that they are the actual driving force of the Empire: whomever sits on the throne needs them to get anything done.
Among them, many important figures might be very happy to get rid of dissidents like Royce Faber: that includes military leaders, scientific minds and midlevel political figures involved in the Imperial forces.

What are your enemies’ crimes, and why is no one else opposing them?

Engineering crazy and dangerous ideas and testing them on the battlefield, without any regards for human lives, to the point that the expression playing gods applies.
As depressing as this might be, the fact is that in the impending chaos, there are many forces that are seen as quite a lot more menacing and high-profile than a group of scientists and engineers playing with magic; maybe when the armies, politics and religious figures get "sorted out" by the conflict, someone will have some interest for this part of history.
