Background: As a child Runa would roam the streets of the old Lake-town getting into fights and poking into corners while her father, Hafgrim, and two elder brothers were away in the wilds keeping the caravans and boatmen safe. When her mother died Runa was usually cared for in Hafgrim's absence by a scholarly uncle who did his best to teach her some of the old lore- Runa was not the ablest pupil but she had some natural curiosity at least, and a good memory, and, whenever her father was home, she would lay the books aside and take up a training sword. In her dreams Runa recalls the morning her father and brothers left with Bard and the Elf king to march on the Lonely Mountain and the strange, doom-laden certainty that she would never see them again in life. Bard returned from the Battle of the Five Armies with Hafgrim's great long sword and the tale of his heroic fall beside his two sons.

Since that day Runa, known as the “Steelgaze” for her ashen eyes and unwavering stare has taken up her father’s sword and followed in his trade, hiring out her blade to merchants, treasure seekers and others who journey into the wilds. She has acquired a reputation for common sense and reliability, as well as occasionally foregoing a wage if there are goblins from the Misty Mountains to be slain.

After Hafgrim's sword Runa's most prized possession is a carved pipe given to her by a Dwarven employer. She's still acquiring a taste for pipeweed, however, and prefers to smoke in private where her coughing and streaming eyes can be concealed.
