The Whig was previously married fix-it-man Rutherford Mason, before a crushing sense of self-unimportance led his mechanical tinkerings in his garage to experiments based on strange designs of bizarre period war machines supposedly from secret corners of America's history. Realizing that these marvels could CHANGE THE WORLD and feeling significant for the first time, he catalyzed in a blaze of ambition and vision. Within the month he was a bachelor, lost his house in the divorce settlement, and lost his repair shop (taking a job at Mr.Fix's, part of a chain of hardware stores).

Rutherford still remains in touch with his teenage children, twin brother and sister Edie and Miles, and has a love-hate relationship with his ex-wife, Linda. He's also been able to maintain a group of drinking buddies from the historical reenactment groups he tends to frequent in order to gain access to vintage components to use in his experiments.
