Background

Lexshue was born on Vulcan in 2410, to a Vulcan father and a Romulan mother. Stonn (father) and Veris (mother) are members of the 'Ni'Var Movement', advocating the reunification of the the Vulcan/Romulan species on its ancestral homeworld rather than joining the new exodus to New Romulus/Dewa III. Stonn was a personnel officer in Starfleet and Veris fought in the conflicts against the resurgent Tal Shiar and "Empress Sela" that led to the emergence of the Romulan Republic as the preeminent polity of the Romulan disaspora. Her childhood left her thoroughly skeptical that Vulcan was ready for that; her parents made it work and provided her and her brother with a good home life, but the Vulcan neighbors and their children not so much.

She applied to Starfleet Academy as soon as she was eligible; proving her snooty classmates wrong may not have been the healthiest motivation but it apparently worked for her.

While she always sought to lead and bring people together, her Academy path and initial career focused on exploring and navigating unknown, hazardous areas, both astral and planetside. Her first posting was as a backup navigator on the Pathfinder-class USS i-Selaya, then a mix of similar rotations through other second-pass explorers and stints as a liaison officer aboard Romulan Republic vessels.

In the latter capacity, she served as acting second officer aboard RRW Deihu when it ran into a previously unmapped field of cloaked gravitic mines left by the 'Imperial' forces from the Romulan civil war. Lexshue was in the officer's mess attempting to explain bahn mi (which she'd gotten a taste for at the academy) to the chef when the explosions hit. The bridge was cut off, the singularity core was destabilized, and she was suddenly the ranking officer available to organize the rescue and repair teams. Her quick response - partly enabled by her insistence to join crew drills as soon as she came aboard - got her a commendation from the Republic navy.

Some years later, while she was second officer on USS Narendra, she was on shore leave on Rubicun III (recently reopened to foreign visitors, now with 100% fewer death penalty misdemeanors) when she was approached on the beach by two unfamiliar men. After telling them they were wasting their time if they wanted to buy her a drink, they informed her they were with Starfleet Intelligence. After moving to a more secure location they told her that SI had caught wind of am operation by a rogue organization and expected that they would attempt to recruit her into an illegal operation.

A Section 31 cell was planning to incite former Imperial and Tal Shiar sympathizers into terrorist action, allowing them to be exposed and eliminated once and for all... at the 'acceptable cost' of an unknowable number of innocent Romulan and Reman lives. Under SI direction, she allowed them to 'draw her in' to the plot and then sabotaged it, getting much of the cell killed and the rest captured.
