Samantha Evans, dependable and sensible brunette with a love of engines, lived in a perfectly rational and reasonable world, grew up in a middle class suburb, dreamed of being a race car driver, but sensibly trained as a paramedic and worked as an ambulance driver for a Melbourne private hospital with a profitable clientele of drying out celebrities and wayward children of the rich.

The craziest things in her life to that point were the clients, but the pay was good, and all management wanted was a driver who would keep their mouth shut around the media, and handle the clients without fuss.

Then things got weird. New management took over, couple of suits turned up to look over their new asset and fire half the old staff. Sam started working nightshifts, and things got weirder. The clients were, well, not just off their faces on coke or speed, but just plain odd. Feral chronics in dreads coughing up blood but not breathing, glitter clad party brats tanked on something more soul destroying than mere privilege, wizened old men in archaic clothes with nice manners but dead eyes, and the sweet little girl who snarled and hissed all the way to the hospital. She nearly quit, but still wanted to finish up the year for the cash to get better medical qualifications at Uni.

A few years ago, New Year's Eve was Sam's last nightshift. Callout to a party, western suburbs, fights and drunks spilling out across three houses and a darling daughter of local agricorp CEO refusing to leave without her new bestest buddy in the world, a visiting colours wearing 'biking enthusiast' from the states...

To cut a long story short, Sam woke up in the back of a container full of expensive motorbikes on a ship headed to Chicago, feeling mean, confused, and more than a little hungry.

Sam's still looking for that particular bloodsucking bastard, and intends to extract her revenge slowly when she find them. Despite her mistrust of vampires, she has had to slowly contact others of her kind on the fringes of Chicago's undead population to try and track him down, and to understand what she is a little better.

After all, when the going gets weird, the weird go pro, in Sam's case, by 'borrowing' a coma's patient's identity, a woman with the same name, but no family to ask questions, and US citizenship and medical qualifications. Using her new ID, she got a night shift job as a paramedic in Chicago, but kept in touch with the fringe dwellers of Chicago, both weird and mortal, working as a volunteer medic at various homeless shelter when she can.

Medium height, wavy short mid brown hair, pale complexion, deep brown eyes, thirst for knowledge matched only by her love of driving like a maniac. She is still trying to get to grips with the fancy ass vampire powers of Protean, but if she has any other non-standard bloodsucker talents, she hasn't figured them out yet.

Away from the public, she makes no secret of what she is, and has something of a gruesome sense of humour in the first place, but she is more likely to make biting comments at you that actually bite your head off. Her lifestyle is hard on clothes, thus she prefers to wear practical jeans and shirts rather than heels and skirts.

She spends a lot of her off shift time reading up on or netsurfing weirdness sites asking "So, how does that work?". Sam has parents and a sister living back in Victoria, but is still listed as a missing person according to the Australian authorities, and is technically an illegal immigrant to the USA, remaining one step ahead of the authorities only by a fortunate 'computer error' not yet detected by official eyes.

When she can't find rats, or pick up a little from the blood bank by tweaking the records, she hunts deniable human prey in the alleys and bars of Chicago, but does not kill in the process if she can help it - Sam might be a thief by necessity, but she's not a murderer.
