Secundus was a tribal man taken in battle and, as a POW, sold as a slave to a Gladiator lanista (trainer/owner). Narcissus, his owner, and he loathed each other for from the beginning and he was frequently over-matched. He would have died early except one of his barrack-mates, the famous Pallas the Thraex, showed him how to survive. Eventually, Secundus (he named himself 'Secundus Pallas'; 'Second only to Pallas') was warned by an 'admirer' (gladiators are also sex slaves to high-bred women) that he was to be matched against Pallas in in a 'sans mensa' match; 'no mercy'.
