Shahla was an orphan in Ibrahim, during the time of the third uprising. She cannot remember more of her life than hunger and fear, before the Old Man took her in.

She cleaned and tidied his house, ran errands and had a small space of her own, a garret above the main room. It was enough.

Many times, the men would come by night. They wore long robes and hid their faces. They would talk in quiet voices while she lay there, sent to bed, listening.

She learned who the Crusaders where, what Ibrahim was and that she had a faith - Ta'ashim. She learned the Old Man did something important, something for which he was paid well.

By twelve, she knew he was a killer.

By thirteen, she was his apprentice.

When the Old Man died, she was seventeen. He left her a small amount of coin and a list. Now the men came by night to visit her and she considered their requests. She had grown tall and strong under the Old Mans teaching, and kept his business running. She guarded meetings, scouted houses, escorted foreign merchants...and killed three men, two Crusaders and a Ta'ashim.

When the Marija came calling, they were polite. They offered her an indenture into their order, or the chance to leave Ibrahim with a day. she chose the latter and found berth on a ship bound for Infidel ports. She has worked for one employer after another since leaving home, but has never killed for money.
