Setting

A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.

You are dead. Or at least you were. Someone - or something - stepped in and prevented you from moving on to the afterlife. You don't know who you were, what you looked like - but you now know something far more important. Persona. Certain individuals possess the power to manipulate reality. They operate away from society's eye, their reach extending farther every day. Your job, your friends, your personality, your self-esteem - they influence every aspect of your life. But now you have an opportunity to make a difference. Persona. When you were reborn, something awoke inside you. Something both alien and familiar. Something frightening. Something that will save your new life. Persona.

To the untrained eye, Tokyo seems unchanged from one month ago. The average person will never know until it's too late. Behind the scenes, giant corporations bid in a high-stakes auction. The winner earns the right to slightly alter reality. Each corporation pursues a frightening agenda - only their competition prevents outright control of the fabric of reality. One month ago, a particularly powerful corporation exploited the system. The exact details of their deal are unknown, but its repercussions slowly grow apparent. Otherworldly creatures appeared, as yet remaining out of the public eye. These creatures will one day overrun civilisation. Fantastical events occur, the result of reality unweaving. Strange deaths are on the rise. You were one of these deaths. You may have discovered the demon assault, experienced a dark event or simply have been in the wrong place - but that no longer matters. You have been reborn into a new body. You remember nothing of your previous life; nothing of your friends, your family, your previous appearance. The few answers you've gained raise more questions, questions you must investigate.

Upon your rebirth, a strange voice spoke to you. It explained your new appearance and your new life. It hinted at the event leading to your death. Most importantly, it spoke to you of Persona. The Persona is another self residing within you. By concentrating, you can summon your Persona and control great power. the Persona will be your salvation in the dark times ahead - demons, ancient societies, reality itself stand against you. Who will you become? What will you do?

Themes

The adventure of the hero is the adventure of being alive.

Each Megami Tensei game carries strong themes. Previous games focused on rumours and society (Persona 2), depression and emotion (Persona 3), gender roles and media influence (Persona 4) - and they all have a few elements in common. The nature of humanity, the nature of reality. Morality. Order and Chaos. Shin Megami tensei: Dungeon Delvers is no exception. SMT: DD uses a persona system like the Persona series, but is closer to Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga in its feel. My main sources of inspiration are Nocturne, Persona 2 and certain elements of the SNES-era SMT games. The main themes of Shin Megami Tensei: Dungeon Delvers are as follows.

   * Second chances: Your characters died and have been reborn, given a clean slate.
   * Identity: You don't remember anything about who you once were. Do you care about your "past" or do you feel liberated? How much control do the corporations exert over society?
   * Cost and Worth: Society is quick to exile those it deems unworthy. People are all but thrown away. How much do we rely on money? What is worth its cost?
   * Mirrors: Reflections. Identity. Revelations.

This isn't an exhaustive list, but these elements will be at the forefront of the game.
