*'''Appearance:''' Chirurgeon gives the first impression of being cool, calm, and remote.  She stands more than six feet tall, and can usually be seen wearing brightly colored, flowing silk robes over an engraved silver breastplate.  She affects to wear small half-moon spectacles, although the lenses within are merely flat glass.  She has caramel-colored skin and flame red hair.  Her moonsilver tattoos are unusually angular: more geometric than tribal.  Because the first and primary subject of Anna's flesh-shaping ministrations was herself, her features are flawlessly symmetrical, and she prides herself on the physical perfection of her true form, even as she sees no problem with grafting animal traits onto it: function is always beautiful.

'''Matron of Shadows' Kiss''' - Refined from a five different mushroom spores and two varieties of sap, this substance has been used by beastman tribes to knock their fellows unconscious prior to invasive surgery until the Guild discovered this wonder and sold it for its other possible applications. Failure to resist the initial application renders mortal beings unconscious nearly instantly for several hours (7 - Stamina). Success on the Resistance Roll gives the individual a -2 penalty due to the severe fatigue it bestows, with multiple successes halving the timeframe for each success (5 - Stam, 0 = No effect). Rarely, the materials cause a sudden and fatal allergic reaction that all medicine has yet to be able to solve. (Botch with more than half of the dice showing 1 causes 10L damage immediately, as the Matron's Kiss sends the soul to the Lethe)  Resource **.

=History=
Annealed Carapace Chirurgeon is the master of triage. From her pre-exaltation youth as an apprentice to one of the few credible street-doctors in Gem, she learned a simple, cold fact: only some can be saved. To save the body, you must remove the gangrenous leg. To prevent the epidemic from spreading, you must quarantine the dying. It is the physician's responsibility to separate the quick from the dead. Post-exaltation, Chiri found that Luna's gifts allowed her to extend her simple, natural philosophy both within and without. Through careful experimentation, she gained almost total mastery of her body's chemical structures, allowing her to produce toxins and anti-toxins at a whim. But Luna's greatest gift was to share a fraction of her perspective: it brought Chiri to the realization that she could scale her talents upwards. The same lancets that could remove necrotizing flesh can carve the pitted black spots from the surface of Creation. You can call it cancer, or Deathlords, or simple human idiocy, but it all amounts to the same thing in the long run. That which can be saved, will be saved. And that which cannot, will be excised.

At a very early age, Chrirugeon (then a young, timid girl called Scuttle) was given in apprenticeship to a hedge-doctor in Gem: Master Chiral.  She spent years there tending to the wounds of the city's mercenaries and pit fighters, developing just enough skill to sew shut wounds or wield a bonesaw; Chiral had once been a competent healer, but his skills had been atrophied by decades of drink.  Upon her exaltation at age 14, Chirurgeon was found by the No Moon caste Hui-Kin Laughing.  Hui brought her to a lunar sanctuary deep in the eastern South, where the glittering desert met high mountains.  There she pursued her original vocation, studying under lunar healers while being fostered by Hui-Kin.  Soon, however, Chirurgeon began to turn her talents inward, steadily enhancing her physical abilities while perfecting her internal chemistry at the expense of her more intellectual studies.  She became, to her own surprise, a deadly warrior.  As a result, on the day of her final tattooing, she chose to enter the Full Moon caste instead of her mentor's, much to Hui-Kin's irritation.

Since then, Chirurgeon has spent her time shepherding various member-states of the Thousand Streams River project.  Rather than carve out her own fiefdom, she has preferred to work as a freelancer, making subtle alterations to existing projects in preparation for assuming her own realm.  Her favorite guise is to travel the south as a wandering healer, dispensing potions, philters, and sometimes poisons to all those mortals she deems in need of her talents, for good or ill.  

Just recently she has inadvertently stumbled upon her Solar Mate, going by the sobriquet Architect Bound in Blood and Bone.  This has proved something of a shock to Chirurgeon, and she has been scrambling to research the nature of this bond she shares, as well as find a method to cure Architect's strange deathly condition.

=Personality=
"Back off, man.  I'm a scientist!"

Chirurgeon is cool, calm, and collected, as well as somewhat arrogant.  She has little regard for sentiment, and her actions can sometimes seem merciless, although she almost always acts to forward what she percieves as the larger good.  She is often blind to subtler social cues, as well as common mortal mores.  She occasionally forgets, for instance, that replacing your lower body and abdomen with an eight-limbed, winged arachnoid form is something most people find disconcerting: to her, it's simply a more convenient form of locomotion.  However, she often sets aside her cool exterior in the interests of relaxation and recreation, utilizing her ability to rearrange her internal chemistry to "gland" several mild chemical stimulants, from qat to coca to marijuana, and during these interludes she can be persuaded to enjoy herself to the point of abandoning her normal iron self control.  She can even be persuaded to make these available to others, on request.

Chirurgeon cares deeply for Architect, in terms she herself is unable to define; somewhere between protective older sister and loyal retainer, with traces of lust.  She is irrationally protective of her only real friend, and will fight anyone she perceives as attempting to harm the Abyssal.

Chirurgeon has a soft spot for slaves, and especially the Djala people.  In the early days of her exaltation, she briefly carved a bloody swath through Varang before she became convinced that no amount of murder, even at the scales she was capable of, would provide a solution to slavery.  Since then, she has been researching more subtle solutions to the problem.

=Goals=
* Find a cure for Architect's condition: she doesn't think of the Abyssal in terms of redemption, but of illness.  Architect can go on being a creature of darkness as long as she likes, if only she stops suffering the effects of Resonance.
* Prepare the world for the return of the Solars.  This Anathema nonsense needs to stop.
* Heal the many blights upon the face of creation: shadowlands, wyld incursions, etc.

=Family=
Chirurgeon severed all ties with her birth family even before exaltation.  She retains some affection for her former teacher, Master Chiral: in the early days of her exaltation she attempted to provide him with support and supplies, but he spent most of the proceeds on alcohol, and her bitterness over this caused her to keep her distance.  

She and her former mentor Hui-Kin have a somewhat chilly relationship, ever since Chirurgeon changed her focused caste: Hui-Kin is a nominal pacifist, and disapproves of Chirurgeon's methods.

Chirurgeon still keeps tabs on some of the slaves and the descendants of slaves she freed during her early years.  She placed the freed Djala wherever she could, often inserting them into territories governed by fellow Lunars.  A few of them instead chose to seek refuge in Paragon.
