Background

In many ways, the road was home to Akachi growing up. Even if he was technically a citizen of Nexus, it's not as if he spent very much time there, given that his family were traveling merchants. Oh, they were successful enough in their own right -- they never wanted for anything, at the very least -- but they always seemed to be just one or two more jobs away from being able to set up a permanent shop anywhere. Akachi is the youngest of three children; his brother is the eldest, and his sister the middle child, and they traveled together with Akachi's maternal grandfather as well.

Akachi always had a gift for languages, and he certainly traveled enough to put them to good use. He also had more book learning than most growing up, in no small part because there was often little else to do on the course of a trip than read from the back of his wagon. He initially started helping with cooking as a chore to help his family while on the road, but it proved to be something he was both good at and loved doing, and by the age of eight, was doing most of the cooking and already inventing or adapting recipes on his own. While he's a reasonably good merchant, he was ruled more by his compassion than his business sense, which kept him from making nearly as much money as he might have. As he got older, he grew more and more interested in exploring old ruins, looking for bits of lost lore -- much of it could be sold, but what he truly valued was finding a new recipe or intriguing new ingredients.

He Exalted relatively recently -- his family was set upon by a group of bandits, and while they traveled with a small security detail, the sellswords fled rather than face superior numbers. Perhaps they could still have just abandoned their goods and ran, but doing so never occurred to Akachi. No, he saw that the bandits might be many, and armed, but they were also suffering from malnutrition, and proposed a deal: he and his family would not put up any resistance to the robbery so long as the bandits would delay their attack long enough for him to cook them a meal and eat their fill. While initially suspicious, the attack was taking place far enough from any additional help that the bandits agreed. And Akachi cooked them a feast fit for kings. The bandits were so moved by the taste of the food and his good natured charm as he presented it to them that they couldn't bring themselves to attack by the time it was all said and done. Akachi, for his part, was surrounded by a nimbus of white and gold as his anima flared for the first time, the disk within a circle manifested on his forehead making it clear to all what he now was. While his family were not followers of the Immaculate Faith, he knew he could hardly risk their safety by continuing to stay with them, since they did travel to several Realm controlled territories on their trade routes, and so not long after, he parted ways with them, though he sends letters whenever he can, and will occasionally find a letter waiting for him when he arrives somewhere, though that's rarer, given the difficulties of getting messages across long distances without magic.

Akachi was already in the Southeast when he parted ways with his family, so he continued further south as he began to learn more of what he was capable of. For a while, his journeys were good ones, relatively free from trouble thanks to his new gifts. He'd even heard of a rare variety of edible cacti that he might be able to find a bit deeper in the south -- a magma sword pear that would only grow in the hottest parts of the desert. It was supposed to have a flavor that carried both the spicy heat of the volcanic pole of fire along with a subtle sweetness that put honey to shame...Akachi had several ideas for recipes he could use it in already. Of course, that all came crashing down when he ran into one Gentle Tempest, an Immaculate Monk attempting to correct the heresy in Kamthahar. She'd asked for simple rice and fruit juice when she stopped at his food cart, but even before his Exaltation, he'd been gifted at telling what people were really craving and would find most refreshing. He didn't even consider the Immaculate prohibition against alcohol, and so it was that he served up something from his special stock of apple cider that he'd fermented himself. The look of bliss on her face, however brief, meant that he couldn't say he really regretted his action, but he did have good reason to wish she was rather less persistent in her desire to mete out punishment. He's been on the run from her since, and that's brought him here...
