Martin Booker

Background

Ask him why he was embraced as a Khaibit and Martin will avoid the question, saying that he cannot know his sire's mind. Inwardly he sometimes thinks back to that first meeting on a World War 1 battlefield and suspects it comes down to his willing serving in the military of a country which showed so little respect to him or other its other citizens descended from slaves. Khaibit prize service, and having been saved from certain death on the battlefield, Martin went on to serve as a ghoul to his eventual sire for a decade, carrying out services ill-suited to those who most avoid daylight. During that time he got to see a bit of Europe and learn about the bloodline he was in service to. Service? Quite a few people work for someone other than themselves. Service was not a problem, especially service which was respected.

His embrace did not bring him into the fold of any of the Circle of the Crone's various subgroups. The theologies he was exposed to were too foreign to his experience. He provided service to the groups as requested but did choose to join one. Even so, service brought rewards. Soon the continent sunk back into a conflict which was difficult on kindred as well as kine. In the aftermath, separated from his sire, Martin made the decision to return to America in the 1945.

Khaibit were not unknown in the US but they were relatively rare. Even so, his membership in the bloodline allowed him to gain association with a Prince who was more interested in results than what the person looked like who provided them. As the decades passed, Marin secured his reputation as a loyal servant, doing what his Prince needed to be done and staying on alert for threats to the Prince. As a result his standing in society grew as the things he was entrusted to do for the Prince increased.

When the duties of the previous sheriff resulted in his final death in the late 1960s it was incredibly suprising that the political winds blew in Martin's favor seeing as how the terms by which the prince's hold on power went uncontested was that the position of sheriff was not appointed by him. Even more incredible was the appointment of a neonate. The two previous holder of the title had been chosen because it was thought they would equitably enforce The Traditions above any agenda of the Prince. Surely the forces that pushed his elevation did not believe their own words about expecting his loyalty to be to all the kindred of the city given his history as a retainer to the Prince (even were that his goal they could not sensibly count on it). Equally dubious were claims about wanting to bring the views of the younger kindred into account. But with his Prince seeing opportunity in Martin's appointment what choice did he have but to accept?
