Terrence the Cyberninja

Background: Growing up as the son of menial workers, Terrence's only escape from the cramped, rundown hovel of an apartment he lived in was the classic anime of the early 2000's. His absolute favourite, Naruto, made him dream of a world where a kid like him could run around in a forest, eat something that wasn't food rations everyday and have a future that wasn't becoming cheap, disposable labour. He became obsessed with ninjas, and resolved that he would become one just like his heroes. So, while other children played games on their AR headsets, Terrence learned about ninjas and what they were actually like. Hattori Hanzo, Mochizuki Chiyome and Jinichi Kawakami were figures he studied in-depth. He learned Japanese so he could read the digitally archived Bansenshukai, the Ninja Encyclopedia. Armed with an understanding of ninjas, he began to train like one. Years went by as he learned everything he needed to in order to find success as a ninja in a world of steel, guns and neon lights. Martial arts, hacking, infiltration, disguise, parkour, poisons: a variety of disciplines all honed in one particular direction.

And then, one day, Terrence took out a loan from the local yakuza, bought the gear he needed, and started his first mission as a Runner under the alias Rock Lee. Since that day, he's gone on many more, sometimes solo, sometimes as part of a team, earning quite the reputation in the process. Success hasn't clouded his judgement, understanding that complacency could get him killed in his line of work. When he isn't on a mission, Terrence devotes his time towards training, his only indulgence the media that inspired him in the first place.


Distinctions

A Shadow Amidst Neon Lights d8: Terrence is a master ninja in a shiny chrome dystopian future, skilled in the craft of assassination, espionage and sabotage. His knowledge is deep enough that he could train more ninjas.

The Emissary of Otaku: Being an actual ninja hasn't dulled his passion for the media that inspired him. He's still an incredibly hardcore nerd, full of esoteric knowledge related to anime, gaming and manga, which may prove useful in an isekai world.

  • SFX - Geek Out: Create a social complication to create a genre savvy asset for the rest of the scene.

"I made it myself" d8: While it's not always possible to work alone, ninjas need to be as self-reliant as possible. As such, he's learned to craft, maintain and repair almost all of the gear he uses.
