Alex Liddel, The Emerald Hatter

Background

The Emerald Hatter is a rumor whispered about by the newer members of the Red Queen's gang. A mysterious figure in a green duster and a matching top hat, some say they've seen him, most have a story about how they narrowly escaped being attacked by a man in green who's skills with a blade are frankly astounding. He seems to have little compunction about who he protects cop, cape, or capo as long as it messes with the red queen's work in some way. Mostly he's not seen at all. Usually a patron of the Kitty Kat Club will see a body lying in a nearby alley, dead or badly beaten, a Queen of Hearts with both heads burned out and 10/6 scrawled on it in florescent green pinned to the body.

In actuality Alexander Liddel is the only surviving member of his family, nearly all of whom died in a fire designed to cover up one of the Red Queen's operations. He returned home from college to take over his family's business, a small hat shop, that barely keeps him afloat. When he found out about why his parents and sisters had died he had a terrible breakdown. This may have been due to the anthropomorphized dormouse in a teapot that told him how it happened. As he lay in bed recovering for his breakdown his new "friend" started trying to convince him to take revenge. Given that he is a master fencer with saber, foil, and rapier, as well as an award winning gymnast; he might just succeed in forcing the red queen to play 52 pickup-the-dead-bodies-of-her-men.

Skills:
  • Great (+4): Weapons
  • Good (+3): Endurance, Resolve, Athletics
  • Fair (+2): Alertness, Fists, Stealth, Deceit
  • Average (+1): Intimidation, Mysteries, Fists, Investigation, Rapport
Aspects:

"...As a Hatter" Alex Liddel has broken, he's two cups short of a tea set. His madness manifests itself in two ways, an erratic, oft confusing and yet highly effective fighting style, and the relentless pursuit of his adversaries. Compel to make the Hatter get in the way of his allies in a fight or run off to find the red queens minions even if its a trap. Invoke to do the unexpected in combat.

Snicker Snack The Emerald Hatter always resorts to his own form of cowboy diplomacy, drawing his blades even if he knows its not the right time. In combat he sometimes seems to fight to the rhythm of the infamous Carroll poem Jabberwocky. Compel to force the hatter to pull his blades when diplomacy is the better part of valor or to have a skilled opponent notice a pattern(and weakness) in the hatter's otherwise erratic fighting style. Invoke to allow the hatter to have a blade close at hand when for all intents and purposes he shouldn't or to enhance his combat abilities.

"What the Dormouse Said..." Sometimes the Emerald hatter can be seemingly precognitive avoiding things that should have been a total surprise. Other times it seems like he's following the worst advice in the world. This is due to his spirit companion, a pooka in the form of a dormouse in a teapot. Invoke to avoid things that would not always be able to be avoided, Compel to force the Emerald Hatter into following the Dormouse's oft bad advice.

To Talk of Many Things Back when he was still in college the Emerald Hatter was rapidly on his way to being awarded every academic honor that his university could bestow and he was set to graduate in a little less than three years. Then came his return to Baroque City, and his breakdown. As a result, Alex can keep up in nearly any conversation but sometimes he thinks the TOAST is what you put IN the toaster. Compel to stop Alex in his tracks as he tries to think out every possible permutation of a problem, even in combat. Invoke to allow the Hatter to rapidly find quick solutions or escape routes.

Why is a Raven Like a Writing Desk? The Hatter still retains his quick wits and love of solving problems, unfortunately his madness sometimes leads him into making exactly the wrong connections. Compel to have Alex go tearing off on a wild goose chase because he crossed a few wires during his investigation. Invoke to have Emerald Hatter pull together disparate facts into a coherent and nearly correct answer.

For the snark *was* a boojum Emerald Hatter is a rumor, a whisper in the dark, and many choose not to believe in him, especially those not directly connected to the Red Queen's gang. Invoke to allow the Hatter to sneak about or gain a bonus to intimidation against Red Queen gangsters. Compel to make the Hatter's attempts to scare his foes fail or work against him.
