LASTBORN

In the year 2075, the Shori Corporation made the first discovery of the material now known as Prima. It was an accidental discovery while mining minerals for their Weapons Division. The resulting unearthing of Prima caused a massive explosion that wrought changes throughout the world. In particular, people were changed: some gained powers, some gained strange new appearances, and others became monsters. Even the natural world became changed – and more hostile. The site of the Prima explosion became a land of perpetual night, now known as the Yami, filled with monsters, strange creatures, and a few desperate human survivors.

Still, Prima solved all the energy problems of the world, and all other energy sources rapidly became obsolete. Shori became the most powerful organization in the world for its exclusive access to the element. Prima was even weaponized, as Shori learned to use it to infuse subjects with great powers to match those who had been empowered spontaneously. Some of these soldiers go mad, some become loyal servants, and some defect to seek their own fortunes.

But as the years passed, it became more apparent that as Prima was used, the world was dying. The only safe place for humans to live was in the giant megacities, “safe” havens away from the hostile barrens around them. Unfortunately, these cities were also rife with crime and corruption, and an edgy populace turned to blood sports to keep them entertained.

Ten years ago, it became public knowledge that the Prima source was dwindling. Social unrest increased as the only way of life people had known for generations threatened to go away.

It was at this time that a new faction revealed itself, the Sakurada Compact, a cult of personality led by Daisuke Sakurada, a powerful psychic. Through Daisuke’s powers, a new source of Prima was located, far, far from any human civilization.

Shori knew they needed to attain this new source of Prima first, but also knew that they needed to tread carefully, lest they lose their control over the populace to the Compact. They organized a challenge, the Evo Crusade [Or the Evo Battle Opera; I don’t know which I like better]. This would be an open-ended battle organized by hit list, taking place throughout the megacities and beyond. The winners of the battle would receive Shori’s newest Prima infusion, a concoction guaranteed to vastly increase the powers of the recipients so that they would be strong enough to brave the quest for the Prima source. These extraordinary few will be the Lastborn, the final stage of human evolution.

Meanwhile, others, motivated by reasons of their own, head out into the wilds seeking the source for themselves…

Other Notes and Other Factions

Shori has organized teams of empowered and infused humans to hunt down monsters in and around the cities. This division of Shori is known as the Human Occupation Protection Executive Branch. Shori has occasionally used them to hunt down malcontents as well, disguising such operations as monster hunts. Some have taken to derisively referring to these squads as the Hope Police.

Another group powered by psychics and spiritualists has claimed to have made contact with Prima itself, and are seeking to save the world. They identify themselves as the Church of the Reborn.

A doomsday cult of assassins and murderers seeks to use Prima to destroy the world altogether. They are known as the Apollyon Cartel.

Crime in and between megacities is actually frighteningly well-organized under the auspices of a powerful organization called the Silver City Guild.
