The Moon's Reflection Character Interview

Introduction/Instructions

Below are character interview questions for The Moon's Reflection, an AD&D 2nd Edition/Skills & Powers Play-By-Post game set in the World of Greyhawk.

The goal of the interview is to get a very basic sense of who this character is -- why he's unique and interesting, what makes him fun to play, how he'll fit with the rest of the group. I don't want to put prospective players to a lot of trouble on these character proposals, so the interview is fairly brief and I'm asking for short answers -- preferably one sentence, but two if you need it. If the character proposal is selected for the first round of the game, the player is definitely encouraged to write longer background material, short stories, or whatever makes the character more fun to play. None of this is required, however.

To submit a proposal, copy and paste the template below into a reply to the recruitment thread or in a PM to Celeste, the DM. Then just replace the explanatory text with your answers. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the thread or PM me. I'm trying to keep this as pain-free as possible. :-)

Interview Template

Basics

• Character's Name: Can change this before the game starts, if you need to.
• Class/Kit: Bard, Cleric (some specialties allowed), Druid, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Thief, Wizard (some specialties allowed). No psionics. If there's a kit you want to use from Skills & Powers or one of the "Complete" books, list it here, and I'll get back to you. Most kits will be allowed.
• Race/Subrace: Human, Elf, Half-Elf, Dwarf, Half-Orc. Human subraces (mixed okay): Suel, Flan, Oeridian, or Baklunish. Elven subraces: High Elf, Gray Elf, Sylvan Elf.
• Age/Birthdate: The campaign begins on 1st Richfest 573 CY. When was your character born, and how old is he/she as of this date?
• Social Class: Peasant, merchant, noble, etc. 1-2 sentences of background.
• Birthplace: Anywhere in Greyhawk. 1-2 sentences of background.

Questions

• Why is your character in Chendl? 1-2 sentences. Born here, has business in the area, visiting, etc.
• What is your character's strongest attribute? One of the six AD&D stats, plus 1-2 sentences of background.
• What is your character's weakest attribute? One of the six AD&D stats, plus 1-2 sentences of background.
• Who is your character's closest ally? 1-2 sentences.
• Who is your character's worst enemy? 1-2 sentences.
• What is the most noticeable aspect of the character's personality? 1-2 sentences.
• What is your character's fondest wish? 1-2 sentences.
• How is your character connected to the missing wizard, his niece, and/or the trip to Morsten? 1-2 sentences. This is your character's reason for being in the party. Maybe Galen was once her teacher. Your character may have a crush on Sylvie. Or your character may have just been told she's inherited property in Morsten.

Interview Sample 1: Conan the Barbarian

This is just for fun. It's based more on the movie than the books, and I've obviously taken some liberties with the story and timeline.

Basics

• Character's Name: Conan, sometimes Conan the Cimmerian.
• Class/Kit: Fighter.
• Race/Subrace: Human, looks like Oeridian/Suel mix.
• Age/Birthdate: 19. 8th Coldeven 554 CY.
• Social Class: Peasant. The son of a blacksmith, Conan was orphaned at a young age and sold into slavery, first as a manual laborer and then a pit fighter. He has since gained his freedom.
• Birthplace: A small village north of Djekul in the land of the Frost Barbarians. Conan's village no longer exists, as it was burned to the ground by Thulsa Doom when he was very young.

Questions

• Why is your character in Chendl? He heard the great wizard Galen Verlaine could be found in Chendl, but his information was several years old.
• What is your character's strongest attribute? Strength. Years of hard manual labor, mostly pushing a wheel, have honed Conan's body into a masterwork of strength, and it has been further toughened by his experience as a pit fighter.
• What is your character's weakest attribute? Wisdom. Conan's single-minded pursuit of revenge for the destruction of his village has blinded him to all other concerns, often placing his own life and that of his companions at great risk.
• Who is your character's closest ally? Subotai, Thief and Archer. Subotai is always there for Conan and has pulled him back from the jaws of death. Now that Valeria is gone, Subotai is the only close friend Conan has left.
• Who is your character's worst enemy? Thulsa Doom. He wiped out Conan's village, and his men killed Valeria, the love of Conan's life.
• What is the most noticeable aspect of the character's personality? His single-mindedness. You can't get more than 10 minutes into a conversation without him bringing Thulsa Doom into it. He's always going on about the snake cult, solving the Riddle of Steel, and how he's going to get revenge.
• What is your character's fondest wish? To defeat Thulsa Doom, of course. Conan hasn't thought much beyond achieving this goal.
• How is your character connected to the missing wizard, his niece, and/or the trip to Morsten? Conan heard a rumor that Galen Verlaine once bested Thulsa Doom, and he had already planned to travel to Morsten. When he heard of the wizard's disappearance, he immediately suspected Thulsa Doom had a hand in it.

Interview Sample 2: Alek Norland, Wizard

Basics

• Character's Name: Alek Norland.
• Class/Kit: Wizard/Noble.
• Race/Subrace: Human/Oeridian.
• Age/Birthdate: 20. 10th Planting 553 CY.
• Social Class: Noble. Alek is second cousin to Viscount Luther Derwent of the March and has distant connections to other noble families of Furyondy.
• Birthplace: Chendl, in the Kingdom of Furyondy. He was born in his family's elegant townhouse in the city and has lived in Chendl all his life. He went to the Academy and apprenticed with Galen Verlaine.

• Why is your character in Chendl? Alek lives in Chendl. Although he has the run of his family's townhouse, he now lives in his own flat near the Wyrm Inn.
• What is your character's strongest attribute? Intelligence. Alek learned to read at a very young age and enrolled in the Academy when he was only ten, which is two years before most students begin their studies. He learns languages quickly and has a near-photographic memory.
• What is your character's weakest attribute? Constitution. Although Alek was a sickly child, his health improved when he reached his teens. He knows his late nights in the library and the laboratory aren't good for him, but he's so engrossed in his research that he can't seem to stop himself.
• Who is your character's closest ally? 1-2 sentences.
• Who is your character's worst enemy? 1-2 sentences.
• What is the most noticeable aspect of the character's personality? His sarcastic sense of humor.
• What is your character's fondest wish? 1-2 sentences.
• How is your character connected to the missing wizard, his niece, and/or the trip to Morsten? Galen was Alek's mentor for a number of years, and this mysterious disappearance worries him greatly. Sylvie and Alek are on friends -- Alek has sometimes wished for more -- and he was the first to volunteer to travel to Morsten with her.
