Solar Charms

General

Transcendent (Ability) Understanding

The Lawgivers' excellence is not limited by their once-mortal spirits. This Charm permanently increases the maximum rating of the chosen Ability by one. Raising the Ability to that level requires the normal expenditure of XP.

Melee

Glorious Solar Weaponry

In the hands of a Solar weaponsmaster even the most humble of weapons can become a formidable force. This charm infuses the Solar's Anima into her weapons, strengthening the attunement or creating one where there was none before in the case of mortal weaponry. The Lawgiver gains her Essence in points to spread between Accuracy, Damage, Defense and Rate - this counts as a weapon bonus and is not subject to the dice cap. Once set the boni are always distributed in the same way. In addition her weapons gain one of the following properties (additional ones can be added at the cost of 2xp each or 1 BP for two of them):

  • Touch of Divinity: Mortal weapons so favored gain the Magical Material bonus of Orichalkum and become as indestructible as artifact weapons.
  • Solar Blessing: The Lawgiver's weapons gain the implicit blessing of her patron Sol Invictus and burn His enemies with terrible fire. All attacks made with them against Creatures of Darkness gain the Holy keyword.
  • Loyalty to the Master: No weapon will leave the hand of a Solar weaponsmaster unless she wills it. All attempts to disarm her fail automatically.
  • Sainted Blade: While Glorious Solar Weaponry is active the cost of Merciful Bodhisattva Attitude is reduced by the Lawgiver's Compassion. If this would reduce the cost to a negative number, she gains that number of motes every time she uses that Charm instead of killing an opponent.

This Charm becomes Obvious only when the weaponry's unusual properties are revealed - when a weapon withstands impossible stresses, burns a demon with holy light or a perfectly executed disarm maneuver inexplicably fails.

Master's Subtle Edge

Defenses are as nothing to the weapons of the Lawgivers. This charm permanently enhances Glorious Solar Weaponry. In addition to its normal effects the affected weapons gain the Piercing Tag and their damage rating is increased by the Lawgiver's Essence. This requires the commitment of four additional motes when activating Glorious Solar Weaponry.

A Solar weaponsmaster knows that to employ her arts she needs physical weapons no more than a poet needs a pen to be a poet. She wields the very principle of Separation as her weapon and not with her hands but with her heart. This Charm permanently enhances Glorious Solar Weaponry in the following way: The weapons enhanced by the Charm can dissolve into pure motic energy and assume any shape the Exalt can imagine, from a single point of light to a gigantic warstrider daiklave or a storm of crystalline snowflakes and she can switch reflexively between appearances. Where appropriate to the form it assumes the Glorious Solar Weapons gain the Reach Tag and can strike enemies up to her (Melee) meters away. The Lawgiver needs not physically move to direct her weapons.
While employing the Heart Moves the Blade technique the weaponsmaster's Compassion is ascendant and no opponent remains faceless or dies needlessly. Even if she strikes at hundreds of enemies at once, or if her opponents hide themselves behind masks of darkness, the Lawgiver sees their faces before her inner eye and knows their names as she strikes them down. Upon invoking Merciful Bodhisattva Attitude in that context she regains her Compassion in motes instead of the normal cost or gain from that Charm.

Merciful Bodhisattva Attitude

The Lawgivers can be merciful in their judgement. This charm is invoked when a melee attack would otherwise kill its target and reduces the damage so the Exalt's opponent is brought to Incapacitated but no further. Even the most devastating attacks leave behind only a thin, white scar, forever marking the opponent as one whose life was spared by the Lawgiver. Neither bleeding nor infections are allowed to prove the Exalt's mercy a lie - both are completely negated by the Charm.
In addition Mercyful Bodhisattva Attitude has the following permanent effect: Striking a nonlethal blow with a weapon that deals lethal damage or striking to mark or maim instead of kill carries no external penalty to the attack. This effect requires no invocation of the Charm itself.

Heart Breaking Blade

Facing a Solar weaponsmaster requires more than just courage for her will is honed to a razor's edge that can cut a man's soul just as easily as it can his body. This Charm can be invoked whenever one of the Lawgiver's attacks hits. For every 2m she spends she can covert three dice of raw damage to one point of temporary willpower lost by the target up to a maximum of her (Essence). This explicitly takes effect before Charms or other conditions that reduce raw damage (such as Adamant Skin Technique) are considered.
When used in conjunction with Merciful Bodhisattva Attitude in the context of a killing stroke this Charm removes all points of temporary willpower from the target for a flat 2m cost but leaves him conscious and able to contemplate his situation as well as the Lawgiver's words.

Eye of the Storm Meditation

Even in the chaos and fury of a great battle the Solar weaponsmaster stays calm and retains absolute awareness of her surroundings. No feints or insidious tricks can distract her or find holes in her defense. This charm permanently enhances Fivefold Bulwark Stance in the following ways: As long as the Charm is active the Lawgiver is never subject to unexpected attacks from being surrounded by enemies and all penalties due to coordinated attacks are negated. Against surprise attacks from other sources she can employ Surprise-Anticipation Method or Reflex-Sidestep Technique without cost. Finally, while rooting her skill in infinite calm and mindfulness the Exalt may always use her Temperance for Melee actions.

Army-Slaying Stance

Against the Chosen of the Dawn armies are as nothing, against their towering presence on the battlefield they break like waves crashing against a rock. This Charm permanently enhances Fivefold Bulwark Stance in the following way: By committing an additional 5m either when activating it or by taking a Miscellaneous action while it is already active, the Exalt gains the benefits of the Army-Slaying Stance. As a solo unit she counts as having a Magnitude as well as a Close Combat Attack and Damage rating equal to her Permanent Essence. She cannot assume formations and has neither Might nor Morale nor Endurance ratings however, using her own capabilities and attributes instead.
When leading an actual Mass Combat unit the Lawgiver uses the higher of that unit's Magnitude and her Permanent Essence to determine attack boni/penalties, but the unit's actual Magnitude in all other calculations. She adds half her (Essence) to Close Combat Attack and Damage ratings after all other modifiers.

Defense of Silence Ascendant (renamed from 'Indomitable Puissance', courtesy of Hundredfold Facets of Enlightenment)

Prerequisites: Heavenly Guardian Defense
There is no thought, only action: intuitive, correct, and arising from a flowing, formless mind. When this state is achieved perfection becomes almost effortless. This Charm permanently enhances the Exalt’s Heavenly Guardian Defense, allowing him to increase its cost by one Willpower to improve its effects against a single attacker. For the rest of the action the Solar perfectly parries any attacks from that attacker which are not unexpected, even those that are unblockable. Every one of these parries are subject to the Flaw of Invulnerability of the Exalt’s Heavenly Guardian Defense. This Charm ends prematurely if the character is disarmed of his Melee weapons.
At Essence 5+ another purchase of this Charm allows the Solar to reflexively spend an additional 4m. The Exalt then parries all attacks of which he is aware for the rest of the action, not just those from a single attacker.

Speed of Light Understanding

When the Lawgivers call upon their chosen weapons it is as effortless as breathing. This Charm permanently enhances its prerequisite Charm(s), changing the type to Reflexive. In addition, when activated as part of a Join Battle this provides a number of automatic successes equal to half the Exalt's Melee rating. In that context the Charm's type becomes Supplemental.

As per Hundredfold Facets of Enlightenment except as noted above and with the following addition: This Charm also permanently enhances the the character's Glorious Solar Weaponry, increasing the number of points to be distributed by her (Essence). These additional points may only be applied to non-artifact weapons.

Presence

Truth Shines Like The Sun
Cost: 4m; Mins: Presence 4, Ess 3; Type: Reflexive

When the Lawgivers speak the truth none may doubt them. Whenever the character speaks the truth (as well as she knows it) and someone attempts to judge or otherwise doubt her truthfulness she may activate this Charm. If she is currently making a social attack, add her Temperance in dice to the roll. Regardless of the success or failure of social attacks conveyed by her words disbelieving their honesty requires resisting Unnatural Mental Influence by spending three points of Willpower. If the Lawgiver is misleading by omission only one point of Willpower needs to be spent. This Charm cannot assert the honesty of words the character considers a lie.

Resistance

Tireless Sentinel Technique
Cost: 3m; Mins: Resistance 3, Ess 2; Type: Simple

Prerequisites: None
Though the Sun hides himself as night he never sleeps, an eternally vigilant warden against Creation's enemies. Lawgivers with this Charm emulate this aspect of their patron. While the Charm is active, he suffers no adverse effects from sleep deprivation besides the lost opportunity for Willpower recovery. A character can go without sleep for (Stamina+Resistance) days in this manner. For every additional day after that he suffers one level of unsoakable bashing damage which can be healed only through rest after he stops employing this Charm.
A Solar may buy the following sub-modules to Tireless Sentinel Technique for 2 XP each:

  • Strength from Determination: The Lawgiver may set himself a task he must accomplish. While he works toward completing it the duration of Tireless Sentinel Technique is extended for however long he needs to finish his task or until he abandons it. As the cost of such inhuman determination he loses the ability to recover Willpower through sleep for that time however.
  • Warden's Constant Vigilance: While Tireless Sentinel Technique is active dull or repetitive work neither tries the Lawgiver's patience nor does it weaken his attentiveness.

Stealth

  • Sidebar Perception: All perception can be divided into three types: Immediate perception, mediated perception and natural consequence. Stealth Charms (and Hidden Sun Prana in particular) work against both immediate and mediated perception for their duration; they negate natural consequence according to the logic of the correspondence in question. Stepping Between Sunbeams Approach is unique in that it prevents only mediated perception, not immediate perception from sentient beings nor natural consequence.
    • Immediate perception encompasses the different ways in which sentient beings observe their surroundings through their natural and unnatural senses. It requires an appropriate sense and an uninterrupted line-of-sense (line-of-sight or the path taken by sounds/scents or ...) and can be augmented by Charms enhancing this sense or artifacts such as a telescope that maintains a line-of-sight.
    • Mediated perception means that information is captured by some sort of non-sentient mechanism (a Charm, a Spell such as Coin of Distant Vision, a ward, an artifact such as a flying drone, or any other mechanism) and transmitted by it to the perceiving being, which itself does not have a line-of-sense to the event observed.
    • Natural consequence is not a mode of perception for actual living or sentient entities, it means the direct correspondence between cause and effect such as the mechanical pull of a tripped tripwire. The Loom of Fate works by natural consequence because every thread in the tapestry in a very real sense actually IS the object or being represented.

Hidden Sun Prana

As Sol hides his face during the night so are the Lawgivers never seen by the wicked. This Charm permanently improves Invisible Statue Spirit in the following way: If the Lawgiver spends an additional point of Willpower activating Invisible Statue Spirit he may take Move, Miscellaneous and Guard (but not Dash, Jump or Attack) actions and use his Dodge DV without ending his imperceptibility. This functions as Perfect Stealth. Against Charms contesting this effect he gains his Essence in automatic successes.
Once engaged in battle the Lawgiver needs to reestablish surprise by other means before he can activate this Charm again.

Stepping Between Sunbeams Approach
Cost: 6m; Mins: Stealth 5, Ess 3; Type: Reflexive

Prerequisites: Invisible Statue Spirit, Mental Invisibility Technique
None have the authority to spy on the Lawgivers. The character can activate this Charm against any effect of mediated perception that he is aware of. Thereby he forces an opposed roll between his Wits+Stealth and his opponent's relevant attribute plus ability. He gains his Essence in automatic successes on this roll.
If the Lawgiver succeeds the perception effect breaks. If he employs SBSA in the exact moment such an effect is created then it fails just as it would if the Lawgiver didn't exist at all. In the case of a tie the effect still fails, but the Exalt's opponent knows that his attempt was actively resisted. In both cases the perception effect cannot be used against the Exalt for one day. If his opponent wins, the perception effect works normally but the Lawgiver may invoke SBSA again for another attempt.

Unseen Army Method

Under the command of the Sun's Chosen even whole armies can move unseen. By spending an additional 3m and one point of Willpower the Exalt can extend the effect of any Stealth Charm he possesses to a unit with a Magnitude no larger than his (Essence-1) under his command. Those affected gain an instinctive sense of how to move according to the Lawgiver's instructions and recognize any action that would cause their concealment to be undone (such as attacking, using Jump or Dash actions, Anima Flare).
For Charms that have a duration longer than one day the WP cost for both the base Charm and Unseen Army Method has to be reflexively paid again for every new day that begins.

Concealing Mind Shadow

What the Night Caste Anima can provide by instinct a skilled Exalt can learn and even surpass by training, blinding the world to their presence. This Charm imposes the Lawgiver's (Essence) as an external penalty on any attempts to notice, recognize or otherwise perceive him. In an opposed roll this adds (Essence) successes to his own roll instead of adding to the difficulty of his opponent's roll. By spending a point of Willpower the Lawgiver can extend this penalty to all attacks made against him. Ranged attacks against him become impossible (he is not a valid target) without the aid of magic or a stunt.

Memory Prism Method

It is the Lawgivers prerogative to decide who has the right to remember them and who has not. This Charm permanently enhances its prerequisite in the following way: As a Miscellaneous Action the character can exclude or re-include any person he can identify by name or unambiguous description from the effect of Vanishing from Mind's Eye Technique. In addition effects that would automatically defeat the Charm's effect gain either the noted bonus or the character's Essence in automatic successes (whichever is higher), but must contest with Vanishing from Mind's Eye Technique in an opposed roll against its previously defined number of successes as per the Unstoppable Force, Immovable Object rule (Exalted, p. 179).

Avatar of the Night

As there is no end to the night unless Sol Invictus wills it so it is with the concealing powers of his Chosen. This Charm permanently enhances all Stealth Charms with a Duration of one scene or more in the following ways: First, their Duration becomes Indefinite. Second, the Exalt can suppress their effect without ending the Charms themselves and later allow them to reassert themselves, both as a reflexive non-charm action. Only explicit ending conditions (such as executing an attack in the case of Hidden Sun Prana, or Anima Flare at the 8-10m level) break the Stealth Charms such affected.

Transcendent Realization of Existence in Nonexistence

Not even the all-penetrating eyes of the Demon Princes or the Neverborn can perceive the Lawgiver when he bodily overcomes the fundamental contradiction between existence and nonexistence. He takes on the aspect of Nirguna, the Heart, nonexistent yet defining the world around them through their actions. This Charm permanently enhances Hidden Sun Prana in the following way: No sense, natural or unnatural is capable of detecting the Exalt (HSP's vulnerability to touch is explicitly negated) and his non-presence leaves no traces behind (he opposes Tracking rolls with Stealth, including Stealth Charms) except where he wills it. His passage disturbs no air, no grass, no water, not even the most subtle flows of Essence. Against perfect Awareness contesting this effect the Lawgiver doubles his Stealth successes after all other modifications.
At Essence 6 the Exalt surrenders Namadiksha, the gift of names, and becomes nameless and unnameable.
At Essence 7 the Exalt takes on the final aspect of Nirguna and becomes non-existant in truth. He is no more than a floating cloud of thought and awareness, utterly immune to any attack or damaging effect except those of Social Attacks.

Awareness

Observer-Unveiling Meditation

To the watchful eyes of the Lawgivers no lurking observer or malicious watcher remains hidden. In activating this Charm the Exalt becomes aware of anyone actively observing him, trying to learn something about him or otherwise perceiving him via immediate or mediated perception. In addition to knowing of their existence he learns a general direction and an approximate distance, which can help him identify them through his own counter-surveillance.
At Ess 3 this Charm gives the option to trigger automatically whenever the Lawgiver comes under observation by immediate perception from a source he doesn't already know of through mundane Awareness.
At Ess 4 this Charm gives the option to trigger automatically whenever someone employs mediated perception to observe, learn something about or otherwise perceive the Exalt.

Supernal Hearing and Touch Understanding

Prerequisites: Unsurpassed Hearing and Touch Discipline
The sensory acuity of the Lawgivers knows no limits. This Charm permanently enhances Keen Hearing and Touch Technique and Unsurpassed Hearing and Touch Discipline in the following way: While either of these Charms is active there can be no invalid targets for Awareness rolls, no force may utterly block his perception without a roll. The only exceptions to this are immaterial entities and invisible essence structures (IE, this Charm provides no essence sight).

Capturing the World's Song

The Solar Exalted don't need eyes to see: They can apprehend the fundamental song of Creation's reality directly and feel the essence flows comprising all of existence on their skin. They do not perceive so much as simply know.

Larceny

The Inspectors of the Night are like ghosts, never seen, never felt, yet always watching. Through the use of this Charm the Lawgiver transforms his material body into an immaterial one, utterly invisible to anyone without the ability to perceive dematerialized spirits. In this state he himself can see but not interact with the material world while being able to both see and affect immaterial creatures and objects. Being without physical substance also allows him to move through any wall or barrier not constructed of one of the Five Magical Materials or warded against spirits. This takes some effort and time in proportion to the thickness and density of the barrier.
Ending this Charm before the end of its duration costs an additional point of Willpower.

King of Thieves Practice
Cost: 10m, 2wp; Mins: Larceny 5, Ess 3; Type: Simple (Dramatic Action)

At the height of the First Age, the Lawgivers of the Night Caste commanded invisible police networks that spanned the entirety of creation. This Charm is one of the resources they used to develop such networks. It requires a dramatic action to train an organization of spies, thieves, scouts, secret police, or other such clandestine force. Five or more hours each week must be spent on training for the Charm to take effect. Each week the Solar trains his force, he picks one trait: Conviction, Dexterity, Perception, Wits, Athletics, Awareness, Investigation, Larceny or Stealth. The Charm increases that trait for each member of the unit being trained by one dot, to a maximum of 4. The Solar can train with the group or as a solo character, increasing his own traits. He cannot increase others’ traits past his own.

Legendary Agent Curriculum

The Solar spymaster has a special mastery of training techniques. This Charm enhances the Exalt’s ability to train others. This Charm allows him to use King of Thieves Practice to train others in any of the following:

  • Potentially useful Abilities he possesses at 4 or more. In addition to the Abilities already available through King of Thieves Practice, appropriate Abilities include: Bureaucracy, Dodge, Integrity, Linguistics, Presence, Socialize, and any combat ability.
  • Attributes. The Exalt can train others’ Charisma, Intelligence and Manipulation to a maximum of 4. He can even train Appearance with an appropriate rationale.
  • Virtues. The Exalt can train others’ Temperance and Valor up to a maximum of 4.
  • Willpower. The Exalt can train Willpower to a maximum of 6.
  • Specialties. The Exalt can train others in specialties for any Ability he can train.

Martial Arts

Crimson Dance of Shadows Style

This little known sister style to the Ebon Shadow Style takes a similar approach in its emphasis on stealth and misdirection and indeed shares many techniques with it. It is not known, whether this style is the result of a different Exalt's deal with Five Days Darkness, an attempted improvement, plagiarism or perhaps a precursor to the much better known Ebon Shadow Style. Below will be noted only those techniques that are markedly different from their equivalents.
Form Weapons for the Crimson Dance of Shadows Style are the lowly knife as well as fighting chains including bladed ropes, a weapon which few outside the practitioners of this style employ.

Shadow Dancing Concentration

Initiates of the Crimson Dance of Shadows Style begin by learning a special form of dance, one that is performed not by them but by the shadows they cast against a wall. The extreme flexibility and body control this requires make the art of the Shadow Dance a valued instrument in the training of assassins even in this day when few remember the greater arts that it is a part of. A true initiate has learned to contort and control his limbs to a degree that is nearly superhuman, but more impressive still is his ability to guide and shape his shadow even in ways that seem contrary to nature, making them the true masters of this dance. An initate invoking the Shadow Dancing Concentration gains 2 additional dice to actions that require bodily flexibility (like slipping out of handcuffs or through a tight space) and 4 additional dice to Performance (Shadow Dance).

Flowing Darkness Counterpoint

Nothing is faster than the darkness when it flees from the light, its eternal enemy. A Shadow Dancer can learn to be just like that which he emulates, evading the sight of others in the blink of an eye. This Charm allows the Exalt to Reestablish Surprise as a Reflexive action instead of a Miscellaneous action. It cannot be activated during attack resolution in response to an attack, nor can it be used more than (Ess) times per action.

The Shadow Dancer makes a complex, Essence-charged sign with her fingers, and the twisting lines of shadowy Essence distract and slow one selected opponent. Unless he spends one point of Willpower the target character's next action is delayed for a number of ticks equal to the martial artist's Martial Arts score, incidentally preventing his DV from refreshing until then. When the target's next action comes, he cannot perform a flurry but may still use Combos and reflexive and extra action Charms normally. After having spent the Shadow Dancer's (Essence) in Willpower an opponent becomes immune to this technique for the rest of the Scene.

Although the Exalt's body does not become indistinct or drink in light like a true shadow, he still moves with the eerie speed and grace of a candle-wavering silhouette. While using this Charm, the character adds his Martial Arts score to his Join Battle dice pool. He also adds a value equal to his Essence to his Stealth score and his Dodge DV. When the character makes a Martial Arts attack (with hands, feet, knifes or fighting chains), he can inflict either bashing or lethal damage at will. Finally he automatically gains the benefit of the Shadow Dancing Concentration while the Form Charm is active. If a character using this Charm is killed before the duration expires, his body dissipates into thick black smoke. He leaves no ghost, and his physical remains provide no evidence of his identity (though his gear might).
