Background

A lonely tower in a dead land. The With Hunter School is perhaps the most foreboding tower in the Empire, on the empy, lifeless plains of the Kuni Wasteland. But it is from there that Yasuke Yorisada began his journey, wrapped in coarse cloth, with his newly crafted Jade Pendant around his neck.

Although not ascetic, his needs were few. In Crab lands no inn-keep, barracks cook, nor road-side merchant would refuse him a bowl of simple but filling fare. In the lands of the Scorpion he rooted out a cult growing among peasants. As a reward he was fed, and escorted north across Beiden Pass. In the lands of the Lion he assisted with a few investigations, but although there were suspicions and accusations of Shadowlands taint, he found nothing.

It was in Crane lands that he met the lovely Kakita O-Ryushi. Assisting the authorities in pursuing a series of brutal and ritualistic murders of merchants and peasant, it became clear to him, through careful observation, that she was at very least, a cultist. If not a Bloodspeaker! Clearly she was behind the ritual murders! He carefully compiled his case, and brought it to the local Magistrate, who made the formal accusations. Her family were hesitant to defend her -- after all, the political fallout from defending a Bloodspeaker could be immense. Instead they sought to delay the trial. Still, with the woman under close arrest on her estate, the murders ceased. And she was tainted. But had they caught it early on, or had she used foul Maho to conceal the nature and degree of her pollution?

As Yorisada added powdered jade to her ashes a yoriki ran to him with the news. The murderer had moved to the next town! The same ritual, the same markings.

He had been so sure of himself. So... ...he couldn't be mistaken, could he? Was O-Ryushi an unwilling victim of the killer? Poisoned, tainted, to through off the investigation?

Kakita Ichiri, O-Ryushi's husband, swore revenge upon Yorisada. And the Witch Hunter was formally invited to depart Crane lands for the immediate future, severing him from the ongoing investigation. But it haunts him, every night. The image of O-Ryushi, her tears and protests of innocence falling on 'Sada's deaf ears as he explained her signs of taint to the Magistrate. He has yet to come to terms with it. If he ever will.
