Üsc is a house-slave of the Black Stone clan in Tumissa. The clan has loaned him to Vinchan hiMeshkutane to be Vinchan's servant while he journeys to the Shrine of Petrified Wisdom.

Üsc has been a slave of the Black Stone clan all of his life; his father was a slave, a Pijenani townsman who fell foul of the priests of She Who Is Not Seen and was lucky not to end up a sacrifice, and his mother is of slave lineage over four generations – a distant ancestor fell into debt. He is a bright and cheerful enough boy, knows his tasks around the house, though he needs frequent reminding to get on with them, and has picked up enough of the Tsolyani alphabet to be able to read simple written instructions. The Black Stone keep meaning to have him properly educated with their own younger boys – a decent slave scribe is worth several hundred kaitars, and one who gets as far as being a major-domo over a thousand.
