The Adventure[edit]

After dinner with Random and Vialle, Evelyn goes off for a nice stroll. Random thinks Clark should be super-science master of Amber, and that he should also walk the Pattern. Clark goes to bed to rest up for his Pattern walk in the morning.

Gwenyth takes a walk. Calypso spends the night in Amber, having a quiet evening in.

Gwenyth goes home. Villagers and bedouins are heading toward a building that wasn’t there. A celebration is beginning. “God” (Caine) appears. He proclaims Gwenyth is his daughter and is a prophetess to be obeyed.

Evelyn goes to Tir. She sees see-through Llewella. It is very important she walk the Pattern. Otherwise, she might wake up. Llewella leads the way to the Pattern. She suddenly looks a little like the little red-headed woman. Evelyn walks and gets to the center. Llewella tells her to go find Caine. Evelyn goes to the unicorn instead.

La Rubio goes and has a private conversation. Finding neither information nor solace in the outcome, he goes to find a rocky outcropping where he can see the sea and moon, and thinks of home.

Clark goes to get the last book he was reading.

Within the castle an alarm is raised. The Lord Protector orders all who are able-bodied to go defend the walls.

Evelyn is in the middle of a forest. She hears the baying of hounds. She sees a gap ahead. It looks like a sandy expanse up against the forest. She sees a huge pack of dogs. They knock her to the ground, and she hears a voice call, “Hold!” It’s Julian. He offers her his hand and pulls her on to the horse. She says that she has to go save someone, by orders of the Unicorn. He gives her a sword. The pommel is like a snake coiled around itself. They are approaching a city, and there is a hail of arrows. The horse jumps the walls and runs up the stairs. There is a red-haired man at the top of the stairs. Julian tells Evelyn to “kill it”. She pulls out her sword and it’s prismatic. The red-haired man’s sword is in flames. A bolt of lightning hits her, and she kicks the man in the shin. Julian is shooting guards with his bow. She asks the man if he’s related to the unicorn. He says that they all are, and then stabs her. She passes out.

The breeze around La Rubio gets drier and warmer. He hears cries from the castle. Calypso, La Rubio, Cyrus and Clark all reach the courtyard at the same time. Benedict tells them to contact Julian via trump to distract him. Cyrus gives Calypso one of his baseball cards. She concentrates on it and passes out. Clark then tries it and shoots Julian. There is a red smear on his armor (jewelers rouge). Calypso get a musket and wants to shoot Julian. Julian tells Cyrus that Evelyn is almost dead and he wants Cyrus to help her. Clark and Cyrus go through. As they arrive, Julian shoots the red-haired man, and the arrow bursts into flames. Julian pronounces that, by right of conquest, he has conquered the city. He then leaves, leaving Cyrus and Clark as witnesses. They tend to Evelyn. Benedict arrives and asks Cyrus and Clark what part of distracting Julian did they not understand. Clark trumps Calypso. Benedict questions Cyrus. Benedict says Caine is in his office. They examine Rinaldo’s necklace and determine it’s not his (the Pattern is backward and it’s blue, not red). Benedict deduces that this is Corwin’s version of Rinaldo, known as Luke. Benedict orders that they all be put on a boat back to Amber, but LaRubio has a trump of the courtyard. LaRubio says he will speak with Rinaldo’s mother. Clark concentrates on LaRubio’s trump, and LaRubio finds himself in the courtyard.

LaRubio goes to find Luke’s mother.

Servants are waiting in the morning with a bath for Gwenyth. She bathes quickly, and then takes her leave to return to Amber.

LaRubio flies over. He looks for a waterfall and a lot of soap. Everyone arrives at the courtyard at he same time. Dawn is breaking. Clark heads for the King’s office. Cyrus goes to see Benedict, and Evelyn goes to see Gerard.

Benedict tells Cyrus that the least effective member of his generation bested Cyrus’s entire generation. Cyrus asks about Caine. Benedict says he was there, but isn’t there anymore. Benedict asks him to leave, as he has adult business to conduct.

In the infirmary, Evelyn shows Gerard her sword wound. Gerard says they need to put some meat on her since her father wants to marry her off fast. He prescribes two days of bed rest and two weeks of not leaving the castle. He gives her a sucker for being such a good patient.

Calypso trumps her mother. She sees Llewella walking through a crowd, waving, clerics waving to her. Calypso goes to get a horse to head for home. The servants question if she’s not planning to attend the King’s Pattern-Walking ceremony in a few hours.

Gwenyth goes to the library.

Clark meets with Random. He says that Julian killed Luke (not Rinaldo). They also talk about Caine’s return. Random asks Clark to keep an eye on things going on in Kashfa. Clark shows Random Luke’s sword. Random’s not impressed as the flaming is caused by a spell. Random tells him to keep it.

Gwenyth sees a servant pushing a tea cart through the library, Fiona following. She warns Gwenyth about LaRubio, as she doesn’t think he’s a member of the family. She offers Gwenyth a position as an assistant, and would reward her by returning Gwenyth’s shadow to normal. All that would be required is for Gwenyth to open her mind to Fi. She also says she would like for Caine to be widely worshiped in chaos, as that would interrupt his coming and going discretely. Gwenyth agrees to consider Fi’s ideas.

LaRubio dressed for the ceremony. Evelyn goes to the Pattern Room in a wheel chair. Gwenyth dresses herself instead of letting the servants get her ready. Everyone heads to the Pattern Room. Under the circumstances, Evelyn is excused. Cyrus is the first to walk and receives a coronet from Vialle. Random then names Cyrus as co-heir, along with Martin. Calypso goes next, and then LaRubio. Clark follows, and the Pattern lets him know that there’s a Princess of chaos that would be a better match for him than for Merlin. Clark vanishes, and Flora passes out. Gwenyth then walks. LaRubio revives Flora, as Calypso walks by rolling her eyes.

Clark trumps Flora. He would like to bring 32 cases and his lady back to Amber. Flora asks if she’s planning on staying. He says at least until Flora’s grandson is born. She faints, but Clark is still in contact with LaRubio as he was in physical contact with Flora. He introduces Lady Jambaya. He then asks Flora to show Jambaya to her rooms as he has to talk with LaRubio. Clark tells him that there are rumors that LaRubio is raising armies to march against Merlin. LaRubio says there are those who want that. Clark says that Merlin believes the rumors, and that LaRubio is being used by Merlin’s enemies.

Evelyn and Calypso have an educational conversation.
