Personal Details, Work Performance, Special Training and Other Notes[edit]

He believes in bravery, discipline, comradery and that the Army, while not perfect, mostly knows what it's doing. These beliefs pushed him to give his best at any time, which eventually led to him being Detachment Commander of OPA 1110, commanding officer to 11 fellow soldiers and in a front row seat to what happens when the Army does not know what its doing.

An operation targeting what was believed to be a small terrorist base somewhere in the mountains between Iraq and Turkey turned into a royal clusterfuck of an ambush in what was actually just the entrance into a huge network of tunnels and caverns.** The way out cut of by collapsing doorways, Cpt. Howard had to find another way out for his squad and he did. When they came to the surface again nearly 22 hours later, he had been shot twice, stabbed once, and was only accompanied by eight men, one of which died on the way back to base.

During debriefing and recovery, his superiors commended him for his performance during the operation, but he was angry at the faulty of intelligence and felt deeply guilty about the lost members of his team. But he was looking forward to rejoin the squad, the challenge of rebuilding it with new members, forge them into a coherent whole again. Instead, he received orders to transfer to a NATO detachment on Ascension Island as soon as possible and when he tried to protest his superiors were polite, even understanding, but made it clear that neither they nor he had any choice in this.
